Brodersen from Denmark

I am looking for any information on the Brodersen family in Tahiti originally from Hjembaek, Denmark. I have a picture of Peder Brodersen and his family taken about 1915 sent to relatives in Shelby County, Iowa. He was a ship's captain and married a Tahitian native. The picture shows 8 children. Peder, born abt. 1849, was a brother to my greatgrandfather, Jacob Brodersen. Jan Camery Pientok, St. Francis, Wisconsin, USA

I think I may have lots of information on the Brodersens. First of all, Brodersen may have been anglicanized once it got to Tahiti. It may have changed to Brotherson, Brothersen, Brothers.

There were more than one Brodersen families in Tahiti at the time. My great-great grandfather was Samuel Brodersen who shortened his name to Brothers. He was born in 1825 in Denmark, died 1915 in Tahiti. He left Denmark as a young man and eventually became a sea captain trading extensively in the Pacific and South Seas.

We have him recorded as having come from Copenhagen. His father's name is recorded as being Peter Brotherson (probably anglicanized from the original Danish) with 1 son and 6 daughters.

He married Mary Browne of Bora Bora, had 9 children (who survived) - They raised their family on Raiatea - one of their sons was also named Peter. (Whether this is your Peder or not, we will find out!). Peter Brothers was born 1881 died 1943. He had 7 surviving children (among which 2 are twins). One of the children (I'm gathering) died. So, it is conceivable that a photo taken in 1915 could show 8 children. The infant is buried next to my great-grandfather's grave on the Christian property at Faarepa. My great-grandfather (Christian) died in 1911 and the child's grave was put there sometime later....

Peter married a tahitian native (Uraore), and they settled on land at Faarepa (Raiatea), next to my great-grandmother parcel. My great-grandmother Elizabeth Brothers married Leonard Christian (of Pitcairn Island). I was on Raiatea last year, and stayed with one of Peter's grandsons (who is about 70 something).

It may or may not be your Peder. I visited the Luranie Cemetery near Papeete (where Samuel Brothers & family are buried) last year. There was a Peter T. Brotherson grave (I photographed tl) which shows born 1895 died 1977. His wife Tetuaaril Brodersen (1866-1901).

Another possibility, is my great-uncle Chester Christian married a Muriel Brodersen (who is still alive). I do not have her geneology.

Some say that the Brodersen's and Brothers family are cousins. As far as we know, when Samuel left Denmark he came alone - and after he had died, we understand that some family member from Denmark came looking for him. Samuel's mother (?) is said to have had some sort of business in Copenhagen (?) involved in the shipping industry. What we have is pretty sketchy at this point.

I'd like to take the conversation off-line.

Read your note on Brotherson. My great grandfather was a Peter Brotherson. He was danish (Brodersen) living in the USA on his way to Australia when his ship ran aground on Fakarava (Tuamutu Islands) 1877. He went for help to nearby Raiatea (not that near) and ended up staying there. He married and one of his sons, Christian Tuarii Brotherson is my grandfather, born 1888 in Avera, Raiatea and died 1962 in Tahiti. Info might help you.

Dear Regine,
I just spent a day with a daughter of Christian Brotherson. Muriel Brotherson. She married into our family (Brothers/Christian). Her mother's name was Charlotte Titi Holly and her father's, was Christian Brotherson. Her grandfather is Peter Brotherson, husband to Tetuaarii. She must be your aunt?

Her two grandmothers (Tetuaarii & Miriama) are half sisters. Thomas Hunter being the father of both. I've got scanned photos.

I would like to learn more about Tetuaarii, if you have any info. I photographed her headstone in a cemetary (Luranie) in Tahiti about 2 years ago. The story I am interested in is about her adoption by the Queen of Bora Bora. Tetuaarii's father was Thomas Hunter, mother's name is unknown. The pregnancy happened out of wedlock. The mother had a "relation" to the Queen of Bora Bora and so she adopted the child. It is this "relation" that I'd like to know more about. It is a similar story to our Mary Browne (adopted by the Queen of Bora Bora when her mother died in childbirth). Her mother, too, had a relation with the Queen.

I'm a little befuddled about which Queen this is - one came from chief Tamatoa's family on Raiatea, another from the Pomare's of Tahiti. The Raiatean born Queen would make the greatest sense....but I don't think the age fits for Mary, she was born in 1845. Tetuaarii was born 1866 (if headstone is correct) and that might fit the age of the Queen a little better.

Many people say that Peter Brotherson and Samuel Brothers were cousins. Samuel had become an American citizen at some point in his life. We keep running into dead ends on researching his roots iin Copenhagen and how and where he became an American citizen. Many say that it was to increase his trade capabilities. I think that it was partly in reaction to the French coming into power. There is nothing definitive out there.

Any light you can shed, would be greatly appreciated. If we could take this discussion offline - my email is stampsr@sbcglobal.net. I scanned some of Muriel's old photos and have just about everyone labelled...if you'd like to have copies.

Thanks.

Hi,
I am a descendant of a Marcella Nati Reynolds, originally Marcella Nati Brothers. Marcella's mother's last name was Brown/Browne. Marcella was born 1885 or 1886 depending on which records I go by. Does she sound like a probable descendant of Samuel Brothers and Mary Brown/Browne? If so I'd like to know if you have any additional background info on Mary or Samuel. Marcella's daughter Anita Virginia DeVilliers is my grandmother.
Thanks!

Hi Christene,
Yes, we are related. I have quite a bit of info on Nati, her brothers and sisters, mother, father, and so forth. Nati and my great-grandmother (Eliza) were sisters. Anita is very dear to me as was dear Everett. You can e-mail me off line - rstamps@sbcglobal.net, if you like.

I can probably answer many questions and e-mail you photos. The history of this family is very interesting...from Europe to Tahiti to San Francisco. I'm glad to hear of your interest.

Hi Regine

Have found out more about my Tahiti/Raiatea HUNTERS and have been reading all the messages again hoping they would make more sense. I believe our ancestors are loosely connected. THOMAS HUNTER was my g-g-grandfather ALEXANDER'S brother. THOMAS'S daughter TETUAAII married PETER BROTHERSEN, if my schoolgirl french with dictionary on the side, is correct.

Hi Heather

So do you know whether there was another daughter besides Tetuarii, because I think that my grandmother's mother was a Hunter as well. I remember my mother telling me she only had one grandfather instead of two. This would make sense if Thomas had two daughters who married and had children and their children then married each other. (if that makes sense). I think that would make my grandfather and grandmother first cousins?!?! Also was Thomas also known as Opa? As this is the name everyone in the family calls him, they can't remember his real name. I have photos of him with Peter Brotherson and ?? Horley (husband of Miriama Hunter).
Let me know if any of this rings with you.
Kind regards
Regine
