Looking for family of William Henry and his son Phillip Hitoti Henry who married a Princess of Maiao. Does anyone know who that is? Phillip and the Princess had a daughter named Teioarua Orimai Henry who married Adolphe Poroi.

Any ideas?

Have you got a copy of Patrick O'Reilly's "Tahitiens - Repertoire biographique de la Polynesie Francaise"? Page 460 lists Adolphe Marouo POROI (1844-1918), Adolphe POROI (1877-1938), Edouard POROI (1869-1903) and Tavararo Elie POROI (1885-1930). This book is written in French (a language I do not speak, however details are not always difficult to work out ie birth, marriage, death etc) - if you want further information please contact me. I am descendant from the Rev Wm Henry's adopted daughter Nancy (O') Connor. Regards, June Henderson

This french is typed without proper punctuation so if you can read french I hope you can decipher it. regards, June

Kathy, Am also very interested to know about Wm Henry's background. I understand he was born in Sligo, Ireland - I visited there some years ago but am none the wiser about his ancestry. I would appreciate hearing from you are able to come up with something and likewise happy to share anything I come across. I gather you are a descendant - from which child? My email address is mirroong@acenet.net.au should you require it. Regards, June Henderson. Brisbane Australia.

Hi Kathy. My name is Timothy Henare. Henare if translated in english, means Henry. If I was you, i would start my search in Rarotonga, or Aitutaki in the Cook Islands and even New Zealand, which is where I'm from (The Henry surname is not as established here in NZ as it is in the Cook Islands). The info from the Cooks, could most definitely lead you to finding your roots in TAHITI. I think but am not too sure, that William Henry went to Rarotonga, and married a Rorotongan woman. The Henry surname is very well established within the Cook Islands. I've heard the older people speak of a William Henry. Also the other name they have metioned was Albert Henry who was most definitely in Rarotonga in the earlier days. I hope this infomation is a great help to you in finding roots. But, yes, I'd make the Cook Islands my starting point in looking for info on the Henry Surname.

Good Luck.

Tim.

Dear ladies,
have only just found this message board and thought I would let you know that I am a distant relative via my mother-in-law who would have had Philip Hitoti as her grandfathers brother. This info comes from a family tree written in English that I have called the Spreading Tree which gives all the relations from Rev William Henry's families as he married twice. Once to Sarah Maben in 1796 and then again to Ann Shepherd in 1813. There may be some info re William Henry's background at the St Anne's Kissing point Church in Ryde as there is a newspaper article inthe family tree book relating to him building this church, as he was a missionary "escaping the anger of the Tahitians who were hostile to Christianity"
Hope this helps. feel free to contact me on my email.
Cathy

According to the article "The Deviations of a Missionary Family- the Henrys of Tahiti" by Niel Gunson, in the book Pacific Islands Portraits pub 1975
William Henry the missionary to Tahiti was born in County Sligo, Ireland on midsummer eve, 1770.
His parents were George & Sarah Henry., who probably belonged to the Church of Ireland. William became converted to the Methodist church and eventually volunteered to join the London Missionary Society in 1796.
William Henry married 1) Sarah Maben 2) Ann Shepherd

This is a very interesting article, describing what happened to the family over time and mentions Philip Hitoti and Nancy Connor as well as the other Henry children

Dear Chris,
Sorry I haven't been on line sooner - would love a copy of the article as the people you speak of are direct relations. Would you be able to scan such a document? Have found it very difficult to trace the Henrys and the Walkers once they got to Tahiti because I don;t speak French well although I can understand alot and I'm not sure where is the best place to look for such info. Am presently trying to track down a birth certificate for my motehr-in-law and the details of her father's death which was a boating accident in the harbour in Papeete. Any hints as to who to contact would be gratefully received.
Thanks Cathy

Hi Cathy, French registrations have been filmed by the Mormon Church, and can be ordered on film to a Mormon Family History Centre. But you have to know what district the event occurred in.

The districts on Tahiti island are, according to a French website;
Faaa;Papeete;Punaauia;Pirae;Mahina,and Paea

The films that are available are;

There are also some other names of districts, which are probably also on Tahiti Island
Search under Tahiti in country search in the Library Catalog on www.Familysearch.org to get the full list.

I do not know which area Papeete Harbour would come under.

The article in question is 23 pages long, and I would rather not scan it as my copy of the book is falling to pieces, but it does contain a 2 page family tree which I would be willing to do. Please contact me if you want it
