Nicholls family in 19th cent New Caledonia
My |Gr.Grandfather was William Andrew Nicholls, his father same name, mother Lavinia (Grundy) - GGF born Edinburgh Scotland - his father mine manger New Caled. 19th cent. Looking for register of death dates for New Caled 20th cent. GGF disappeared, looking fairly desperately for any clues as to where he ended up, died. His family lived in French/English condiminium on the island. Can anyone help me to find register? or place family there? Thanks if so

Re: Nicholls family in 19th cent New Caledonia
Did you try the Archives in Noumea, N.C. They're very helpful... Your forebears, from Scotland, if they were missionaries/christian may have been expulsed by the French because of their xenophobic view of the natives ! the people I'm looking for are Thorp, Hayes, Brown in N.C. with, perhaps, connection to East Indies, marine merchants... Re: Nicholls family in 19th cent New Caledonia
At Erakor village, Port Vila, Vanuatu (New Hebrides) there is a graveyard near the Presbyrterian church containing a grave for Marita Nicholls age 58, died 20 August 1978
A possible connection?
The British/French Condominium was the New Hebrides, not New Caledonia

Hi Vernette,
Are you the same Vernette that was researching Mary Penrose Robinson in 2002. If so, I have some information for you.
Regards,
Mark Austin (descendant of Mary Penrose Robinson)

Re: Nicholls family in 19th cent New Caledonia
Dear Vernette. My maternal grandfather, Gordon Reginald Nicholls was the son of William Andrew Nicholls who travelled to Noumea, in nickel-rich New Caledonia around 1895 as a mining manager (or assayist) possibly for mining giant BHP. He died shortly thereafter and his wife and 3 boys settled in Noumea. My GF died around 1952/3 and is also buried in Noumea. If you are still seeking information about this family branch please feel free to contact me. *As you are probably now aware New Caledonia was/is a French Protectorate not a condominium (that was the New Hebrides, now called Vanuatu and also settled by one of my GF's brothers probably in the 1920's) Kind regards. Re: Nicholls family in 19th cent New Caledonia
Mireille - I have a feeling that you are related to the Nicholls family of Noumea, as am I. I am trying to find death notice of William Andrew Nicholls (wife Lavinia) but also want to know why he was noted as 'Captain W A Nicholls' M.E., in Lavinia's death notice - Sydney Morning Herald 1915. I am in touch with severa descendants including Ralph Hogan of Bali, whose mother is Lilette, granddaughter of same. I've asked Ralph to ask his mother if she knows..hoping for a reply.
