Hi Balletnut, I just found your message on here, I see it was a few years back, I'm afraid I can't help with English records of Isaac & Dorothy Parkes but I am a decent living in Australia. My great grandmother was Zelia Richez , her mother was Elizabeth Parkes. When the families came to Australia in 1848 aboard the General Hewitt Zelia was one year old, her father died a few months after they got here & Elizabeth married John Roberts, I have a copy of that marriage certificate but I don't know a lot more.
Regards Janette

Hello Janette,
I can tell you more about the Parkes, Richez families. They came to Australia as part of a migration known as The Lacemakers of Calais - they were in Lille where there was also a large lace industry with many English workers - although the Parkes seem to have been in France since 1816 - which points to the battle of Waterloo.

The workers in Lille WERE threatened by the Revolutioneers and it would seem that they were told to get out, virtually leaving everything behind, or else...

Their next immediate movements aren't clear - they may have gone to Calais to get out of France - or at least got to London. The entire family of Isaac Parkes and Dolly Ward came - 9 children, including Elizabeth who was born in Brussels, JeanBaptiste Richez born France - and maybe Calais - I will check - and the little Zelia. There is much to tell.

Regards,
Gillian

Hello Gillian,
Thank you for your reply. I do know where Zelia spent part of her life or maybe 50 years of it Would it be possible for you to advise me how I could learn more about the family? I have started a family tree here but have been looking to find more info before continuing.

Thanks.......Janette

Good Morning Janette,

Firstly I would have a look at the site for The Australian Society of the Lacemakers of Calais - this will give you a bit of an idea of what it is all about
. I have bits and pieces of information that I am happy to share with you. I also know of two other families who are interested, but neither use the internet! I don't feel I can put their addresses up on Ancestry, so if you find my email under contacts on the above site, then I can send you their details off Ancestry.
Meantime I will dig out what I do know,
Gillian
