I would start by ordering the microfilm for the time that your family was in Bitche from your local family history library. Since you have an exact birth date for Anna, I would order tape number 1351346 that includes records from 1873-1882. Baptisms, marriages, births and deaths are all interspersed, but they are in chronological order, and normally the person's name is in the margin. Often birth records include the parents and grandparents names and where they were born, occupations, etc. Bitche is both a town name and an area name, so you may have to look at records from other nearby towns if they didn't live in the town of Bitche. You might also try Geneanet, if you haven't already.

So I am trying to find connections here. I find it interesting that this John Mauss came to America in the same year as my Wendall Zuck... Wendall's sister Ann Marie was marrried to a Joseph Mauss. Wendall Zuck also came to America in 1872 he lived in Boston, his Uncle Wendal Wagner settled there. There are others that went to Nebraska...where there were other Wagners...
I find it interesting that this is the second passport application so he went back to Liedersheidt more than once? Would love to know why?
Anne Marie and Joseph Mauss had a daugher Catherine b. 1875. She married Jean Megel in 1896 in Liederscheidt. I would also love to find information on that marraige.

Name:
John Mauss
Birth Date:
12 Mar 1855
Birth Place:
Alease Lorainne
Residence:
Deadwood, Sou Dakota
Passport Issue Date:
14 Jul 1902
Passport Includes a Photo:
N
Source:
Passport Applications, 1795-1905 (M1372)
wife is Augusta

I tried searching for Yves Bellange in Poitou on Geneanet, and got one result. The poster included his sources, so this may give you some good leads. To get started, you would go to www.geneanet.org and enter the surname and location. You can also subscribe to receive weekly updates.
Elsie

Thanks for responding. yes, I've seen tons of info about Jacques Bellange, also a Hippolyte Bellange who came later on. My Yves Bellange is supposed to have come from Poitou, but so far I've not seen any documentation about that. Thanks for your suggestions.

Your Yves Bellange is probably related to Jacques Bellange - a very famous artist. There is quite a bit written about him and his expertise. Anyway, many times towns were named after a family that lived there....sometimes the other way around. Bellange is in Moselle, Department of Rohrbach and it is usually referred to as Department 57. My family is from that same area in Moselle and they were glassmakers. I saw one reference to Jacques Bellange making porcelain. I'd post the link however, I don't know if I can from this message - so...just google Bellange, Moselle and I think you'll find what you are looking for.

Val thanks for the reply. I see your father is in Welwyn (which is where I was born) and where Aunt Kit was living when I knew about her. My brother seems to remember that your mother (and presumably your father ?) visited us at the pub which our parents ran when we were children ?
I am living in Surrey but am about to embark on a holiday (belated honeymoon! - believe it or not I remarried earlier this year) so we're off this week to the USA.
I will certainly give you a call on our return - and fish out the photos!! In fact I know we had one of a very glamourous Diana which was amongst our fathers belongings. Both my parents are now gone - as is my father's older sister Ellen - but the youngest of the 3 siblings Fred is still alive and living in Suffolk. My direct email is
lynwiltshire@btinternet.com.
Look forward to catching up with you in 3-4 weeks.
Regards
Lyn

Dear Lyn,
I'm glad to hear from you too. My partner Jonathan is the one that has researched our family trees. I understand your Father was my Mothers half-brother and the families knew each other which I didn't know - I'm not sure whether my Mother knew. My Mother Diana and Aunt Valerie (you're right I was named after her!) are sadly no longer alive but my Father will also love to hear about you and of any photos of Diana. He is based in Welwyn Garden City (and aged 86 but very fit for his age), Herts and I am near Newbury and so I wonder if we are near enough to come and meet you one day?
It was certainly not known to me that my Grandmother had not married - that must have been a difficulty in those days. She was a very private sort of person and that might well have been part of it.
Anyway, my phone No. is 01635 281903 if you would like to call - I'm usually rushing about so don't worry if there's no immediate reply, I'll get to 1571 eventually.
with best wishes,

Val

Val I am so delighted to hear back from you.
Your mother - Diana - and my father (Albert Edward Louis - known as Ted) were half-brother/sister - ie they shared the same father. Our grandfather was never legally divorced as far as I know from my grandmother.
when I was a child - about 8/9 I met your grandmother - she was known to us as Aunt Kit.
I guess you were named after your Aunt Valerie ? I remember Valerie - but not your mother.
Somewhere in my loft I have some photos of your mother as a baby in the arms of my dad!!
Where are you living now ? Love to hear more news from you

Lyn
(formerly Lindsay Ann Forster !).

I have been advised that my relatives came from the Strasburg area then after the 30 years war moved to an area described as the Moselle. In about 1754 following the plague (1680-1775?) they moved to Udange BE. Anyone have any suggestions where I should begin my search in the "Moselle" area for a family called Schortgen (Shortge') prior to 1754? Would any records exist in that area for that timeframe?
Thanks

John Burgun and Anna Schang - Bitche, Alsace-Lorraine

Can you advise how I might be able to track down birth or marriage records for the family members described below, or perhaps, the names of the parents of John Burgun and Anna Schang?

John Burgun (born abt 1847, I think in January, in Bitche)
Anna Schang (born abt 1847, Bitche)

John and Anna married in 1873.

John and Anna immigrated with their children to the United States and settled in Smithton, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh) in 1889. The father and sons were coal miners, and I suspect may have been miners in Bitche as well, as I have some indication that Bitche is rich in mineral resources.

John and Anna's children's names are (all born in Bitche to my knowledge):
Peter J. Burgun (born abt 1876)
Catharine Burgun (born abt 1878)
Anna Burgun (June 13 1879) - this is my husband's great-great grandmother
George Burgun (born abt 1881)
Maria Burgun (born abt 1882)
John Burgun (born abt 1884)
Daniel Burgun (born abt 1886)
Ottilia Burgun (born abt 1888)

Amy

Re: Kirsch Family

Pardon, but I speak no French so my answer will be in English. My Kirsch family included 3 brothers: John, Peter and Daniel. Their father was John Kirsch and their mother, Catherine Kirsch.

I have done extensive research in Buffalo, NY. I have also tied my family to that of Germaine Stengler who has posted her family history on Ancestry.com. Here is what I understand to be true based on my work and that of Germaine:

JOHN KIRSCH
b.15 Nov 1821 - Lengelsheim, Lorraine, France
d.2 Feb 1880-Nousseviller Les Bitche,Moselle,Lorraine,FR

married 5 Feb 1847 to CATHERINE KIRSCH
b. 10 Apr 1819 - NLB, Moselle, Lorraine, France
d. 2 Jun 1875 - NLB, Moselle, Lorraine, France

Children:
#1. GASPAR - b. 9 Jul 1848 - d. 9 Sept 1924
#2. DANIEL - b. Dec 1850 (Nusweiller, Saargemund, Alscase-Lorraine, Germany) d. 3 Jul 1910, Buffalo, Erie, NY
(buried St. Francis X Cemetary) married to Magdalena "Lena" Schmidt (1847-1928)
#3. PETER b. 20 Dec 1852 NLB, Moselle, Lorraine, France; d. 3 Aug 1919 Buffalo (buried United German & French Cemetary) marr to Catherine Kopp (1949/50 - 1913)
#4. JOHN - b. 19 Feb 1858 Nusweiller, A-L, Moselle, France c. 27 Mar 1921 Buffalo (buried French Roman Catholic Cemetary/Pine HIll) married to Marie Elizabeth "Lizzie" Schmidt (15 Apr 1852 Singlingen, A-L, Germany - 6 Apr 1836; buried United German & French Cemetary)

JOHN (1858-1921)and LIZZIE was my great-grandparents. Their children were:
#1. MARY b. Mar 1884 Wolferdingen, Germany; d. 1922/26 Buffalo
#2. GEORGE b. Nov 1885 Germany
#3. KATHERINE b. 22 Apr 1888 Wolferdingen d. 19 Mar 1974 in Buffalo (buried White Chapel Cemetary)
#4. JOHN b. Mar 1891 Buffalo; d. 4 Jun 1893 Buffalo (buried St. Francis X Cemetary)
#5. JOHN PETER b. 7 Jan 1894 Buffalo married Fifi

KATHERINE was my grandmother. She married WILLIAM NOSHAY (also NOSKA or NOSKE) b. 1887 as WILHELM NOSKE to FRANZ NOSKE (b. 1852 Pruesen, Germany; d. 1908 Buffalo buried Pine Hill) and MARIE Sophie Adolphie AHLSCHLAGER (b. 1857 Berlin; d. 1936 Buffalo buried Buffalo Cemetary). William Noshay d. 1963 in Buffalo and is buried in White Chapel Cem in Tonawanda.

Many wonderful stories about these families, starting with the 3 brothers and their parents in Germany/France. Mrs. John Peter (Fifi) Kirsch told me her grandfather was a mill superintendent in Saarbourg; the Kirsch family worked at that mill. Lizzie and Lena Schmidt were sisters who married brothers. John joined the Kaiser Guard after Germany won the latest round of the Franco-Prussian wars. Their parents died (1875-80) and his brothers did not want to serve Germany in another war so Daniel immigrated to Buffalo in 1885. John followed in 1888.

The next generation is also interesting. My grandmother was attracted to the neighborhood "bad boy". Grandpa owned one of the first motorcycles in Buffalo. He was a nude male model! Early in their marriage, a terrible tragedy: their second child (daughter Marian) was run over by a trolley car while my grandmother was holding her newborn son, my father, William Charles Noshay.

I hope this helps you determine if our families are related. I was be happy to hear from you if you find a connection. Good luck with your research.

Hello,
I am not connected to the family LAQUEY, but my ancestors came also Moselle, Lorraine, France.
I looked if I could help you and I found this :

- Jean LACQUET / LAQUAIS / LAQUAY, born in Bettelainville, died at Basse Yutz, (son of Gaspard LACQUET and Marguerite HOUBART), married on 2 December 1702 to the Rurange les Thionville with Barbe HOEREN / HERENT (daughter of George HOEREN and Anne PUCLINGEN) .
- Their daughter : Christine LAQUAY, born 1715, married on 10 September 1737 at Basse Ham with Jean Baptiste BECKER, born in 1715 to Kuntzig (son of François BECKER, born in 1678 in Basse Ham, and Anne WAGNER, born in 1680, married 21 November 1706 at Florange).

Do you know the website « www. geneanet.org » ? There is a person who has a couple LAQUAY Jean and HOEREN Barbe in his tree.
My e-mail: nadine.mayer @ orange.fr.
Best regards. Nadine
Glaudell (Glaudel)

I'm researching my wife's family, the Glaudell family. Our research indicates that the line probably comes from Lorraine and is probably Glaudel prior to coming over. The 1st generation is one August Glaudell. He is alternately known as Augustus Glaudell and was a barber.

He was born about 1850 in France and came to America prior to 1873. Before that he is a mystery. I have a suspicion that his line is related to Henry August Glaudel from New york, and several other Glaudel lines, but have no info or proof.

I was wondering if anyone has any further options for researching this line as I am at a dead end on this one.

Thanks,
-Brent
