Hi everyone:

There are 4 departments in the region of Lorraine. See Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorraine_(region)

In this website, you’ll find all the departmental archives online:
http://fr.geneawiki.com/index.php/Archives_en_ligne

Good hunting.

Hi Lucie,
My husband's ancestors came from Lorraine or Alsace. They were part of a large migration of German speaking Catholics that resettled the Banat region of Hungary between 1765--1770. Records are good in the Banat but most show origin only as Lothrigen (Lorraine). The generation we know about were born between 1740 and 1750 in Lorraine. I don't speak French. Do you know of any Catholic church records available on line in English for this area? Some clues suggest the area near Moselle. Ancestry and My Heritage have records from Germany but not France. The Banat area has "Family Books" for each town copied from church records and available in English that record births, marriages and deaths. Are there similar books anywhere for the Lorraine area? Thanks, Carol

Hi Carol:

I need more details in order to get started. What are the surnames and the years?

Regards,

Lucie

Hi Lucie, My husbands family where part of the Donauschwaben resettlement to repopulate the Banat region of Hungary between 1765-1770. Using records from the town of Billed, Romania where most were relocated I tried to match up witnesses to marriages and godparents of children to identify family connections when no city of origin was given. Many simply showed Lothringen (Loraine). Our surname of primary interest is Philippi or Philipp. principal surname connections are Koenig and Zimer or Cimer that appear repeatedly in one another's church records. The birth years center around 1740-1757. Josef Zimer, (son of Carl Cimer & Marie Jager,) wife Marie Finch. Catherine Koenig, b. 1757 married Jacob (Jacques) Philippi in Billed in 1777. She seems to be closely related to a Peter Koenig (I think a brother) his wife Catherine b. 1763 who were not married until Billed. No cities given for any of these. However others with lesser ties include a Christopher Koenig from Loraine, wife Catherina b. 1734 & children Magdelena b. 1756; Anna Margaretha b. 1764; Catherine b. 1768 all in Loraine. Joannes Zimer b. 1719 from Wisbach or Misbach, Loraine who seems connected to Carl Zimer. I did find a Zimer married to a Koenig near Moselle in older generation and also a Philipp(i) line in nearby towns (Winger?) but could not find first names that match up by age (these records from LDS & Ancestry). These were all German speaking Catholics so I am looking for church records as most likely source. I know it is a needle in a haystack search but I want to try. I may get lucky.

Hi Carol:

I couldn't find any cities resembling the ones you mentioned, as for the names, well there are a mountain of PHILIPP, KOENIG and ZIMER in Meuse, Moselle, Meurthe-et-Moselle and other regions but I couldn't find any of yours. My search was in the CDs I have and not every city and every year is included.

Sorry to disappoint you. Keep on searching, specifically the collections of Familysearch.org - they always add new ones. And if you have a subscription with Ancestry.com, keep on looking. Have you also looked in the "Archives Departementales" in France? I don't know exactly what's there for the departments mentioned above, but it's worth looking. Let me know if you need additional help.

Regards.

Lucie
