Hi Amandine
Again I did not see that you had replied and can't remember how it came to my attention. There is nothing at the side of our name to tell us either. So strange. Still I get to see it eventually.
And again I can't thank you enough! You are amazing at this! You know everything! We received the death certificate information for her parents but not the actual copies. I would like those. We will ask again because we have found some great information from the real certificates. As you say, the witnesses can sometimes be family but in our case even the friends are important.
I wonder if the Jeanne Donnadieu who married Marest might have been a relative that tried at being an artist. She could not have succeeded if that were the case but it is a possibility because there were a lot of possible cousins etc all living around the area.
We will check out what you said about the cemetery. We assumed it would be Lisieux but as you say it may not even be there that she is buried so that needs checking out. So sad...the funeral bits. We have found out so much about the lives of so many people in that time period and always the dreaded death part comes along and makes me feel quite tearful at times. Her tutors...so great, so truly great and admired. Pretty much died with nothing and are then forgotten. But anyway we are searching so hard now in readiness to present a second and very in depth report so the more we can include the better. It has to be the best we can do. We do use Gallica a lot for old newspapers etc but is there any other source you know of that we could use?
Again I thank you so much for your help. You give superb suggestions and it is very encouraging to us.
Warmest regards
Mandy
x

Hi Mandy!

I have no personal link to the artist but enjoy some experience from my own genealogical research and helping other people with theirs, thus some good tips and useful links... ;)

Actually, I find that Google is a good tool to find a particular message especially if, like me, you have a lot of them on Ancestry. That's where an unusual pseudo becomes handy. But you can also access all your previous messages via the 'View posts' link on the right of your username (bookmark it and you'll have a direct access).

Anyway, I'm glad you've found this information somehow helpful and hope you'll be able to find more clues to further your research, it's a fascinating quest, indeed!

From the snapshots I could see on Ancestry, you already have a copy of her full death certificate? Did you ask the town hall if she was buried in their cemetery (the plot called "concession" can be bought in perpetuity or for a fixed number of years)? If she wasn't, they should be able to tell you where her body was buried as the mayor had to authorize the transportation through a decree called "arrêté d'autorisation de transport de corps" which will give you the destination details.

Concerning her parents deaths, did you ask for a copy of their full death certificates? It's always interesting and sometimes the witnesses are family.

As for the 1926 marriage, it seems they added some later archives to complete the 24 serie: http://www.geneaservice.com/archives/france-mariage-naissanc...
Where did they marry then? You'll have to ask a copy to the corresponding town hall but a lot of them have on-line forms for that. Let me know and I'll look for the link. The possibility of her marrying once in 1926 at 60 years old then again later with one Mr.HOUDARD, whom she later divorced, seems thin but it has to be checked nevertheless...

Since 1932, a divorce place & date is indicated in the margin of the birth record, but from 1886 to 1932, it was written in the margin of the marriage record. Which is of no help in this case as you don't know where she married... Perhaps he was from the Lisieux area, which would explain her living there, or maybe it was because of the war. Do you have her home address in 1941? It might be fruitful to check the censuses records for it (1926, 1931, 1936). And the decennial tables/electoral lists for her husband name. Also, as I've said, the Enregistrement archives might have more infos but they're not easily accessible.

Unfortunately, it's not an easy task to prove two people knew each other, especially based only on papers clues. I'm not familiar with Van Gogh life and personality but I imagine that, being both painters living in the same street of Paris, thus frequenting the same shops, expositions and circles, they had many occasions to meet each other. Perhaps even were together at some event where photos were taken! But finding them, of course that's another story...

Warmest regards,
Amandine

Hi Armandine
I did reply to your excellent post but I just wanted to add that I am very sorry for the time it took me to reply. I actually could not find the post at all and still don't know how to locate it on ancestry. I finally found it because it cropped up in a search on Google would you believe! I tried again to find it this time so that I could apologise and I still ended up having to locate it through google instead.
So, what I am trying to say is thank you again and also sorry for such a delay in replying. I will get the hang of this soon, I'm sure.
Warm regards
Mandy

That was fantastic Armandine! How did you do that? How did you know all that and also be able to put it so well?
You were so incredibly fast too! Have you also been researching this artist?
We did the things you suggested and because of that have found more bits and pieces so thank you very much indeed for being so kind and helpful!
We know that Jeanne Donnadieu also married someone called Houdard because it says on her death certificate that she was divorced from someone called Houdard but they don't know any more details about that. The marriage bann that said an artist called Jeanne Donnadieu was marrying someone called Marest was on that site you suggested and we bought it but it was in 1926 and she was in her 60s. Yet we can find no other artist with her name so perhaps she did marry when she was older. Can't find anything on this though. Very difficult. Not sure how to get hold of marriage certificates if they are not on Paris.fr but we were given the death certificate for her father and for her mother, which was enlightening. I am assuming it may be possible to get a marriage certificate this way but would need some idea of where the wedding would have been held I would imagine.
She died in Lisieux in 1941. I keep wondering how to find out if anyone in that area knew her when they were young or if their parents knew her. Someone there may still have something useful of hers but there will probably be no way of knowing unless we could perhaps ask a local paper to that area to run an advert.

We do own the picture of Vincent van Gogh by Jeanne Donnadieu which is why we are researching it. Superb background story! The picture is so much bigger than what is in the frame.

Well thank you so very much again. An amazing reply and immensely useful!

Warmest regards

Mandy :-)

Interested to note your posting that a William Henry Lanphier was born in 1780 as a great grandson of Thomas Lanphier of Parkstown.

Do you know the names of W H Lanphier's parents? I believe W H Lanphier went to Oxford University as undergraduate, but I failed to identify his father's name in the register there. I suspect his father may have resided in Dublin at the time

Also interested to note that he possessed a coat of arm of Lanphier, but do you have any evidence of this?

Can anyone throw any light upon this?

Andrew

Hello there,

I suppose that your query is linked with the research described here: http://vincentvangoghportrait.com/other-works.html ?

A lot of work has already been done so it's possible you already know of the few informations I've gathered so far, but here they are anyway:

- Jeanne Louise Marguerite DONNADIEU was born in the 17th arrondissement, on January 30, 1864 (05:30 pm) at her parents' home in the Batignolles area: 25, rue Saint-Louis (which became rue Nollet a few months later, on August 1864: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rue_Nollet). No marriage is indicated in the margin but those were only mentioned on the birth certificate from 1897 (1945 for the death).

- Her parents were Louis Alfred DONNADIEU, aged 37, employee, and his wife, Christine Joséphine VILLARD, aged 33, no occupation. They had married in Paris on October 16, 1856 but I don't know in which arrondissement. The marriage certificate itself is not yet on-line but it exists and is even part of ancestry.com data (Louis Alfred's father was Jean DONNADIEU and Christine's was Joseph VILLARD).

- I've searched for other children of this couple in the same arrondissement but found none between 1860 and 1872. All the DONNADIEU children have different parents. So, if they do exist, they were either born earlier or somewhere else (I haven't checked the 19 other arrondissements though).

Paris archives (Tables Décennales = 10-years alphabetical indexes): http://canadp-archivesenligne.paris.fr/archives_etat_civil/i...

Jeanne's birth certificate: http://www.mediafire.com/view/?c89m8rxi4xgxdbb

However, the main source of indexed archives for Paris area can be found here: http://www.geneaservice.com/recherche/index.php
Their data come mainly from private indexing and notary archives (mariages & deaths, births aren't yet on-line) and electoral rolls. The search results only show a snippet of the picture so you'll have to buy the pack containing the one you want to have the full infos (10€ by pack, no matter the number of pictures). Nevertheless, it's very interesting as they have exclusive data for the early 1900's (deaths especially).

I haven't looked through everything (DONNADIEU and VILLARD aren't exactly rare names) but noticed these few results which may be of interest:
- serie 18 (Paris suburbs - deaths 1893/1902): Louis Alfred DONNADIEU on April 1st, 1896 in Asnières (departement #92, Hauts-de-Seine, not on-line for this period)
- serie 19 (Paris suburbs - deaths 1903/1912 - fiche 2): Christine Joséphine DONNADIEU
- serie 19 (Paris suburbs - deaths 1903/1912 - fiche 16): Christine Joséphine VILLARD (most likely Jeanne's mother, same as above)
- serie 20 (Paris & suburbs - voters - 1891 - fiche 3): Louis Alfred DONNADIEU
- serie 24 (Coutot archives - France - 1800-1910 - lot 3, fiche 9): Christine Joséphine DONNADIEU
- serie 24 (Coutot archives - France - 1800-1910 - lot 4, fiche 46): marriage of one Miss DONNADIEU, artist, living in Paris 6th arrondissement, 13 rue Grandes Chaumières

Aside from these records, you might want to check the 'archives de l'Enregistrement' where all notarial records (including transfers of property and inheritances, death tax) have to be recorded. Typically these records indicate the heirs so if there was an inheritance AND things were done properly, it should answer some of your questions. They are kept locally however so you may need professional help to find them, or at least a dedicated helper (privacy delay is 50 years, so not a problem there).

You could also check censuses if you have the exact address (French censuses aren't indexed and Paris didn't have one until 1926).

Another good source of information about family and descendants is the cemeteries records. They generally have a contact address with name(s) of the people who paid for the burial plot. Cemeteries maintenance being part of the municipality duties, look it up at the town hall, but keep in mind this information is generally considered private and not to be shared with strangers (visiting in person often helps)...

Do you have any idea at all why she moved to Lisieux? Perhaps because of war or to be near family? Have you checked the local newspapers at the time of her death? : http://archives.numerisees.calvados.fr/cg14v3/presse.php

Hope that helps a little and good luck!

Regards,
Amandine
Jeanne Donnadieu - Artist Painter / Artiste Peintre

We are researching a very important Parisian female artist that has been forgotten. Jeanne Louise Marguerite Donnadieu. Born 1864. She lived 4 doors away from Vincent and Theo van Gogh in 1886. Her address there was 17 Rue Laval (or Rue de Laval)which was changed to Rue Victor Massé in 1887. She was there at least from 1885 to 1897. We know she went to Pantin and was definitely there 1912 - 1914 at least. We finally found out that she had died in Lisieux, 1941, age 77. On the death certificate was a note saying she was divorced from someone called Houdard but no other information was available. Did she have children? Relatives? Friends. Where are her things? Writings? Other paintings? Only a very few are around but one of these is of Vincent van Gogh. She called it "The Misunderstood" rather than use his name so we have been asked to find some document that proves in writing that she knew him. He is on the canvas and they were close neighbours but for it to be accepted there has to be even more! Any help at all would be fantastic.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my research efforts regarding one EDWARD FINEL I wish to communicate with anyone researching the surname of FINEL that might have someone, or know of someone, who would have been in the Massachusetts U.S.A. area in the time period of 1700 to 1748. This man EDWARD FINEL 1, we believe had ancestry from France and was probably Christen Baptized named EDWARD, or his father was at this time. Because this man birthed a son named EDWARD FINEL; born 27 October 1748 in Massachusetts and because of the naming patterns in the U.S.A. at that time period he could have been named for his father, or his grandfather.

It is not known at this time in my researching if the first FINEL immigrated to the U.S.A., or if he might have been part of a military unit stationed in or near Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. I have been unable to determine any information relative to this man; birth, country of origin, death, or whatever.

The lady we believe to be the mother of his child could have also been a friend or relative of the real mother. Although, there are indicator’s that this lady was his mother in some of my findings.

Thank you

It would help considerably if you could give the name of the town or village that they are believed to have lived in.
Languedoc-Rousillon is made up of five different departments, making your question almost impossible to answer without further information. What makes you believe they originated in this Region of France?

Hello Paul & Julie

I too am trying to get more information about my great-great grandfather Louis Ollier, born in 1845 in the Alsace-Loraine region of France. His family came to the US (Cincinatti, OH) in 1850 and pretty much settled there. Louis was a barber and he moved to Batesville, Indiana with his young family in 1883; later returning to Cincinatti in 1908 where he died in 1928 at the age of 83.

As you can see, I have a lot of details about Louis, but I haven't been able to nail down his parents name. I do know he had at least 1 brother named John M. Ollier.

That is my family. Hyppolite Odilon Arnal is my 3xgreat grandfather. I branch off from his oldest daughter Noemie. She married Emile Balez and they had Sarah. She married Adolphe Piche and they had Louis Leo. He married Mary Squires who had my father Leo. Do you have any more information on the family? I still cannot go farther back than Jean Antoine Isodore Arnal b. 1808. Any other information, (pictures, immigration records, etc) can be e-mailed to me.
Hi - I'm looking for information on my father's family (Rene Arnal b. 1930) He is grandson of Arthur Arnal and great-grandson of Odilon Arnal. He has so many stories about his childhood and family - but is starting to have a hard time remembering names, etc. If anyone has pictures, information, antecdotes - can you please contact me? My email is jessicarose.arnal@yahoo.com. He thinks he has a great aunt that may have held some rank in the church, not sure if that rings a bell with anyone. Thank you!
Jessica Arnal

Hi Colin:

Why not write to the:

Mairie
6 rue Massillon
34120 PEZENAS
FRANCE

and ask for the birth certificate since you have an exact date.

Enclose in the letter a "Coupon Reponse International" which you can obtain in your Poste Office.

Good luck.

Lucie

Hi,...if you google Uriah Surratt it will give you a little more information. Supposedly he is my great x6 grandfather and he was married to Dutchess Marie. His son, Elisha, is my great x5 grandfather. From what I read he was working for George Washington's side in Revolutionary war and fled France with his 2 year old son who may have been Elisha. He reportedly couldn't find his wife in time to bring her, too.

Magne from Lozere, France

My great grandfather Vital Magne was born in Lozere, France in 1881. He was an illegitimate and only child as far as I know. I don't know what his mother's name was, but he immigrated to St. Claude, Manitoba, Canada in 1891. I believe he came over with his mother. I'm trying to find his mother's name and her Magne family lineage. I would also like to know who his father was, as he took his mother's surname of Magne. Anyone who connects with this in any way, I'd appreciate you contacting me.

Hello,

Hauts-de-Seine is a department of France; it is not a city.

If you do not know the city where your father was born, send a letter to the City Hall of Castelnau-le-Lez to get a copy of his death certificate. It is free. It will probably tell you the name of the town where he was born and the name of your grandparents (his father and mother). This is the first step to doing more genealogical research.

Here is the address:

Mairie de Castelnau-le-Lez
2 Rue de la Crouzette, CS 40 013
34173 Castelnau-le-Lez Cedex

If you want to send a letter to get a copy, but don't know what to say in French, let me know.

Bien amicalement
