Jacob Cadot and Francoise Diel

I'm trying to find more information about my Huguenote roots.

I'm looking for someone called Jacob CADOT (and also Francoise
DIEL , his wife). I think he was a sea captain, sailing between Holland and
Curacao. He died between 1707 and 1710 and would have been born before 1680.

I found his name in baptism records for 4 children in Rotterdam
(1696 - Catherine Cadot, 1699 - Jean Cadot, 1701 - Jacob Cadot)
and Amsterdam (1704 - Jacques Cadot).

I know his wife, Francoise Diel is from Dieppe. (possibly Jacob Cadot also)
Ofcourse I'm also very much interested in her story.

Does anyone have access to church / baptism or marriage records from Dieppe from that period and would anyone be able to find anything ?

Bonjour,

To obtain records of Dieppe write : AD 76 (that means archives départementales of Seine-Maritime). Then select : archives en ligne;
then clik on: L'état civil.
And : Cliquez ici pour accéder à l'état civil en ligne.
In commune write: Dieppe, and the dates.

Try also : http://en.geneanet.org/ available en English for free. Just perhaps to register.

It seems difficult to found something matching your wish if you dont have more info. Do you know when or/and where he married Françoise DIEL, how old was she ...? If you need more help dont worry tell me.

Good luck

Hello Pierre,

Thank you.
I found that website, and there are quite a few church records to look at.
I can't determine which ones are Catholic or Huguenote. (or were baptisms for protestants registered at a Catholic church ?)
Which records are for Dieppe or close to Dieppe ?
I don't know where they were married, only that their first child was born in 1696. So the marriage is probably in 1695 or 1694.
Rotterdam seems the most likely place the marriage took place, but there are no marriage records there, so then Dieppe is the next most likely place and 1695/1696 is a period in Dieppe's history a lot of Huguenots left.
Francoise Diel seems to be linked to the family of Jean de Caux (apothecary) through his wife, Marie de Caux. (Marie de Caux is a witness at one of children's marriages).
Also there is a Guillaume Allard and a Salomon Asselin listed as guardians for the children.

Hy,

Difficult to answer.

First : if the first child was born about 1696 Jacob CADOT was certainly aged more than 20and was born around 1650 1676.
Secund: in 1664 the protestants received the right to fulfill their own records.
Third : in 1685 they lost that right due to the revocation of the Edict de Nantes.
Fourth: we may suppose that Françoise DIEL was not French. Her name dont sound French. If you try GeneaNet you can verify they are more DIEL in Netherlands than in France.

I tried to found something in Dieppe; it seems to be only two (?) parishes: St Jacques and Sy Remy

http://huguenots.free.fr/dieppe.htm: In this site appear one Anne CADOT and also some ASSELIN

Sorry for my too few help.

Hello Pierre,

Thank you.
Actually, that link helps.
I already found somebody called Anne Fret, who was a witness at one of the children's baptisms.
I then found a testament from 1690 in Rotterdam by Jacques Cadot, mentioning Abraham Fret and Anne Cadot (apparantly his sister). Maybe Anne Fret is their daughter ?

The name Diel does sound Dutch, but could also be German.
However Francoise Diel is French, in a naturalisation document from 1710 it says she was born in Dieppe.
