Hello! I am looking for a Francois Xavier Maldeney who left France in 1867 with his wife Josephine Fevrier and his son Francois Maldeney, who was born in 1862. They moved to Jefferson, Indiana.

I was wondering if this might be your ancestor and if so, I was hoping we could trade information.

Thanks!
Cassandra

I just found out that the 10-year tables listing births are available online. Er..some of them. There were quite a few listed in the first decade of the Revolution (1793-1802). I think the next decade wasn't available. Let me see if I can cut and paste the directions to get to them on the French website... (Thank you Annette!)

http://archives.doubs.fr/

Click on Portail de recherche, middle of page.

Access au portail de recherche, right side

Creez votre propre comte - blue box - this is where you create a password. After you get that set up, and then you enter your name and password, you get another screen. Blue box now says bienvenue - welcome.

Click on dark blue box labeled recherche guidee

At the bottom left corner of the next page, click on Etat des fonds (in dark yellow)

Click on fourth line down - begins with commune . . .

Click on etat civil.

Click on tables decennales

Click on the line marked 1793 -

Scroll down to find the town you want - suivant, at bottom, basically means next. (you want Dung)

But, before you go to the town records, to find the Menegay file, type the name in the box marked recherche, upper left.
Isidor ALEXANDRE and Jeannette Weiller....4 children born in city of Belfort between 1874 and 1879. I have these birth records but have been unable to find a marriage record for the parents. I had been told that the marriage might have taken place in Durmenach, Jeannette's birthplace but can't find any record of it on LDS films. Any ideas as to where I might next try searching will be appreciated.

Your right...interesting name...and challenging. We have all had a few laughs over the name Dung.

I've found juat a few in the US that I haven't been able to 'tie' to our family yet. One of those is a Charles Vildebille and his family (deceased)in Connecticut. He was born in Montbeliard. His wifes maiden name Chagnot. This family has ties to the Moullin family from France. There were Moullin's on the ship with the Vildebill's. Hmmm.

Thank you for the website and the hints on how to search it! I will look up the other names this week as well.

I also appreciate the advice on the civil records. I have a gentleman that has offered to do a 'limited' look up for me at the archives in Sept. I'll have him check on the marriage.

The records from the port of New York list J. as being born(abt)1777. The records from France say Jacques was born 1775.

Thanks again for your help. Shirley

Interesting name. Have you tried this website:
http://doubsgenealogie.fr/genealogie/actes/index.php

In my limited experience Mary Ann may have been Marie Anne in France.

In the advanced search if you enter VIL for the surname, and click on au debut (beginning) it'll bring up quite a few names starting with VIL. There was a Jean Georges Ville Dit Bille born in 1770. Joseph born in 1773, Jeanne in 1774, Anne Clémence in 1776, etc. They were all born in Dung (how embarrassing)

Dung is an hour walk west of Montbeliard - very close.

It would appear they would have married after the Revolution, so you may have to check the microfilm of the civil records.

Looking at the ship list transcription provided by Annette Lynch, she says Mr. J Vildibille was born about 1777.

Jacques VILDIBILLE b. 1775, his wife Mary Ann b.abt 1783 and their three children, Charles, Louis and Catherine emmigrated to the US on the Henri IV. They left the port of LeHavre and arrived in New York on 17 May 1828. Ship information says they came from Dung, Doubs, Franche-Compte,France. Other than Charles and his descendants I have 'lost' the family once they landed in NY. I am also hoping to find Jacques parents and Mary Ann's maiden name. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Someone must have information on Nicolas. He was in the U.S. in or before 1866. He lived awhile in south, (probably St. Louise) and for awhile in the west (probably Kansas/Nebraska), eventually lived and died in Wisconsin. Sister Adelle witnessed Nicolas signing his "Intent to Become a Citizen" in New York in 1877. He was buried in Wisconsin in early 1891, later brother Emile transferred the body to (New York City?) for reburial in a posh cemetery. He expanded his name to "Nicolas Bourlier de la Chevalle" , Chevalle, a French word having something to do with horses. Brother Emile was big in the horse-racing industry in Louisville. Appreciate any hints or helps on Nicolas. Bill Allen

Dear Ed,
I am terribly sorry I did not see your post until now. I wish I would have seen it earlier that's for sure since I am always interested in Courtot, Rosselot, Pacot etc. and have been researching for many yeas. I suppose you and I are related since Condell Courtot was my granfather, Michael Courtot half brother. Joseph was my grgrfather and he m. Margaret Coleman in 1851 and they had the following children: Catherine who m. Force Apgar abt. 1874 just about the time that Joseph and Margaret were divorced. Anyway, his children were: Catherine, Mary, Joseph, Emma Idah, Michael and Laura Elen, not in that order but this is just off the top of my head right now. I met Charlotte Warman once years ago when my sister and I went to Owensville. My oldest sister met Condell years ago when she was a teenager.
I have the orginal passport of Joseph Courtot and I have many records and also French info that takes our Courtot family back many years at least until the 17th century. I also found in Cincinnati that Joseph and his second wife Jennie had another child born here and died and is buried in St. Joseph New Cemetery. My grandfather, Michael, wrote Joseph letters in the 1880's and I have them along with a letter that his daughter Mary wrote to Joseph from Cincinnati also around 1880 asking Joseph to please come to cinti to see young Joe because he was not expected to live but a few days. I would love to share info with you because I do have plenty and hope you still have the same address. I live in Cinti. in Cheviot. I was also wondering didn't your grandmother have a brother named Lloyd Courtot? I know he is deceased but would any of his family have any documents or photos. I would love to have info about the barrel factory although I do have some and I would love to share any photos possible. Over the years some of the French people from Andelnans have helped me a lot with my research and I do believe in sharing. I hope you contact me but if not perhaps I will try to find your phone number or something. Would you happen to have a photo of Joseph? Joseph, Francis, and Henry Rosselot were all related. Do you happen to know any descendants of Catherine Courtot Apgar; maybe they would have some photos also. I would love to know more about all of his children.
I was the youngest in the family and by the time I was born most of Joseph's children were gone except for my grandfather, Michael, who only lived a year after my birth and Condell Courtot whom I never got to meet. I will be thrilled to hear from you. Please e-mail me at RWhita5761@aol.com
Let's see if we can figure how distant we are related.
If my grandfather, Michael, was the uncle of your grandmother Charlotte that would make Charlotte and my dad, Robert first cousins, then Charlotte's children and myself would be 2nd cousins so I think that makes us like 3rd cousins.
Waiting to Hear
Roberta
Just doing a quick lookup on Ancestry showed a possible Catharine Mignerey and family arriving in NY on 13 Apr 1850 aboard the Adelaide Metcalf.

Quite a few Mignerey's were on the ship - not all of them listed together. And the ones listed with Catharine didn't appear to all be from the same family.

It "appears" the father was Jean Georges age 53, mother Marie Goux about the same age. Brother Jacques age 21, brother Charles age 9 -- then it gets iffy.

Complicating all of this is the tendency for the people in this area to give all their kids the same names. The ages are often approximate too.

I'm sure since the date of your first post in 2001, you've gotten much farther than this. There are severral people who have traced most, if not all, of the Mignerey family in France/Württemberg.

After I used the website
http://www.servancnaute.fr/actes/
to track the Euverard/Euvrard/Oevrard family around Etobon, I noticed someone had a public tree on Ancestry (and maybe Rootsweb) which followed the Mignerey family back even farther to their roots in Montbeliard in the mid-1500's. I emailed one of the people who had used that data and he didn't know where he had gotten it. The Mignerey family in Etobon married into the Euverard family several times.

One of the wives came to America in 1832 to settle around Mowrystown in Highland County (Elizabeth Mignerey B: 24 Nov 1789, D: abt 1876)

I added that older data into my tree. (I'm not THAT picky about accuracy yet... someday I will be.) You can see the latest incarnation at
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db...

Maybe it'll help, maybe not.

Roger

Hi Marti,

I responded about this name last summer in another thread. Here are two websites which might help you.

http://www.servancnaute.fr/actes/index.php

http://doubsgenealogie.fr/genealogie/actes/index.php

Type the name into the space below "recherche direct" and click on "chercher." You can then click on each name to learn more. If you find a name that interests you, I might be able to help more. I documented all of the information for the town of Etobon, where there were some persons with this name. Let me know also if you need some help with translations.

Beth Wood

bethwood22@aol.com
Hi Steve,

To follow up on the previous message, there is a genealogy group in France which has transcribed many acts from the Haute Saône area in France. They are called Servanc'nautes and this is their website for research in the acts.

http://www.servancnaute.fr/actes/

Type in the name of GUEMANN (or any other name for those who read this message) and you will see a list of those with the name in all towns that have already been completed. Most of this list of the Guemann name is from Etobon. I did the transcription of these acts from Etobon and I have a CD with all of the acts if there is a name which interests you. However I see a couple of names from Héricourt, which might be the one that you are looking for. If if is, write to me at:

bethwood22@aol.com

and I will see if I am able to find a copy of the act for you. Obviously, all of this information is written in French. If someone needs help with translation, I would be able to help.

Beth Wood
surname Tuaillon in Haute Saone and Vosges in 1800s

My husband's great grandmother Marie Hortense Tuaillon b. about 1862 was married in US about 1880 to Walter Achey in either California or Missouri. It seems that most people of the Tuaillon surname lived in Haute Saone and Vosges at the time she left France. We know nothing about her family. Can anyone tell me why someone/families might have left in this period? Did many people leave this area in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War?

Research on this line has stalled. The one respondent lives in France (i.e., speaks/writes French), and is not related to me.
Quite a few of my Anabaptist ancestors relocated to Ohio, and eventually to many points north and west of there. My great-great-great grandfather took his family from Ohio to Canada around the time the Civil War broke out, because Anabaptists are mostly also pacifists. You might try looking around Waterloo and Kitchener in Ontario.
My gr-gr-gr grandfather never returned to the U.S., but many of his children and grandchildren did.
The 'original couple' in my Anabaptist immigration story came, with 6 of their 10 children, to Ohio in 1835. Two more 'children' came with their families around 1854 and settled in Indiana -- these sisters had married 2 brothers by the surname Schwartz, and those families were Amish. Another daughter came over around 1855 and eventually settled in eastern Iowa.
I have met people whose last name is Guymon, who are members of the LDS Church. Don't know if that would be an Anglicized spelling of the surnames you listed, or whether it's totally unrelated.

Hegy was born to Albert Hegy and Mary Aubry. Mary was first married to Joseph Goodfriend, and had two children who were both born in Wood County, Ohio. After finding her headstone in a cemetery in Deerfield, MI, I found out her birth year is 1864. After looking at Census records, I found a Mary Aubry with the same birth year is the daughter of August and Emily Aubry.

Any info you may have, would be a great help!

Bill Southard
Deerfield, MI

Hello-

I know this is an old thread but I just found it today. The surname you are looking for is also spelled Gehman or Gehmann. I am from PA and descended from Christian Gehman who left Switzerland in the 1700's. He went to Germany for a while near Heidleberg before some of his sons set sail from Rotterdam to Philadelphia around 1735. Currently I am on my lunch break at work so I don't have all the info. There were 3 Gehman brothers who came here with their families. Christian Gehman had at least 3 sons who sailed from Rotterdam and I am descended from his son also named Christian. There is a man in Michigan named Paul Gehman who has done extensive research on the Gehman name and he has traced the 3 brothers and was working on more when I last heard from him.

My husband was in the US Army and we were stationed in Germany. I ran into a young man in Mannheim (near Heidleberg) Germany with the last name Gehmann. I'm sure he is a distant relative but he did not speak English and I do not know enough German tell him that we were related without sounding insane.

Although you spell the name differently I believe we all originated from the Swiss family. In the book I have at home the name of the town is given along with the original spelling of the surname and some back history.

Please contact me if you want more info at bryn1240@hotmail.com

Not sure if this will help, but Pierre Henri (Henry) Rosselot is my maternal ggg-grandfather. I haven't found information on Suzanne Blanc's line, but Jacques' father is Justi Rosselot (1730-?) & mother is Magdalena Mouillesaux (1731-1790) both of the Belfort Territory area. They had 4 other children besides Jacques...

My grandfather is George Claverie who died in 1921 (?) of emphesemia. His address at his death was 1400 block of N. Villere Street at the home of Charles Claverie. Do you think this may be a connection. George was married to Sidonia Barbarin and ancestor of Elizabeth Ballon.

The cemetery records mention a Audincourt, France along with Hericourt, Fr. We have checked some records while we were in France. Righ now I am lookinf for a Jean )John/Hans) and his son Charles Gaymon/Gaymann. Both were born in France and came to Ohio around 1851.

Monsieur,

Steve Guemann

Emigrated to New York 1912. Died 1929. Had father George Ruffio living on Rue des Granges in either Belfort or Montbeliard in 1914-1917. Father may have been a baker. Had brother George and possibly brother Joseph.
