Hi Charmaine

Good news and bad (or no news)!

Since I contacted you previously I have found your village called Frontignac in Haute-Vienne. I have joined the Haute-Vienne Yahoo group and after several weeks finally was accepted as a member. I wrote to the group requesting any info on Ferdi but have received nothing other than their offical welcome to the group. I will email the group again, but it's not looking good.

The Haute-Vienne archives are not online yet so I have to rely on the goodwill of the other members of this Yahoo group. Normally I have had good responses when requesting info on Yahoo groups so it's not looking good.

Regards

Lee Hill
Bonjour,
Location of Frontignac France
It is a small village near Saint Sulpice Lauriere. It is on the Route de l'Eland off the Rue de Frontignac (D203). The biggest town nearby is Limoges which is SSW. Smaller towns nearby are Bersac sur Rivalier and La Jonchere Saint Maurice.
Frontignac is not near Frontignan.
I also found it on Google Earth.

Kind regards Charmaine

Hi Charmaine

There has not been a region called Champagne in France since the 1790s, but I have accessed all of the Departmental archives (many going back to the 1500s and listing the old commune names)from the area it once covered and have been unable to find a "Frontignac". The only reference I have found to a commune of that name is in Herault (34) (now called Frontignan, on the Mediterranean coast way south of the former Champagne. Many people have said on their trees that Frontignac is in Champagne but I have found no documentary evidence to support that.

I have many contacts in France (including my own French cousins) that research family history in their regions and I have found their information to be very reliable and always based on digitised/microfilmed primary source documents.

Regards

Lee Hill

Hi, thank you for this wonderful information. I'm just picking up now where my Mum left off. I'm a granddaughter x 7 of Ferdinand's. I shall look up Frontignac again and post details but I too initially got the information about Frontignan being the modern name. Frontignac is in the CHampaigne region of France.
My thoughts, looking at this logically, are that he may have essentially been a refugee, given the Revolution. The De before Meurant means that he was probably from an aristocratic family. I think in those times it's conceivable that you would try and disassociate yourselves from the aristocratic class. He seemed to have dropped the 'de' . By the time of the revolution the Hugonots were better treated so I think the former is a more likely scenario
for leaving France. All speculation of course.
Kind regards Charmaine

Hi Charmaine

Ferdinand was my wife's great great grandfather. I went back over my French Yahoo group query on this couple and found a few errors in my previous posting on this forum.

It seems that many people (including myself until I did further research) have assumed, based on unsubstantiated information on the internet, that Louis De Meurant and Jeanne Trinquant were Ferdinand Meurant's parents. This couple were married in 30/10/1753 at Andrezé (Maine et Loire, 49 – North Western France). Louis Demeurant's parents were Louis Demeurant & Catherine Guais and his wife, Jeanne Trinquant's parents were Joseph Trinquant & Jeanne Beneteau.

Louis De Meurant (a weaver) and Jeanne Trinquant only had 2 children:
- Marie b. 25/3/1761 and d. 20/9/1766 at le May sur Evre,
- Joseph b. 23/2/1768 at le May sur Evre.

These families lived in the Le May sur Evre – Andrezé area for their whole lives. This information comes from several genealogists in France who have done extensive research on these families. This is typical of my own French ancestors (day labourers)who never moved more than 5-10 kms to a nearby village. In addition, Ferdinand was a Huguenot (protestant) while this family's marriage and births are contained in the parish (Catholic Church) records. There is a 102 year gap in the records (spanning the 1765 birth of Ferdinand) during which the Huguenots were persecuted.

Some people have also assumed that he was born at, Champagne, Dordogne (24), Aquitaine, South Western France. There is no place with the name “Champagne” in that Department of Dordogne. There is a “Champagnac de Belaire” and a “Campagne”. I have sought info on the first of these from a local genealogist who has checked the parish registers at that time for no result. He has suggested that the name (De) Meurant is not known in that area. Again, the Huguenot/Catholic Church record problem does not help. Both of these places are in western France but nowhere near Le May etc where Demeurant/Trinquant lived, or Frontignac where Ferdinand claimed to have been born.
Ferdinand also named his property at Parklea in western Sydney (Australia) “Frontignac” supposedly after the village where he was born. Frontignac (now called Frontignan) is located in the far south of France on the Mediterranean coast in the Department of Herault (34). The Herault archives are online and I have personally searched these for the commune (village) of Frontignan/Frontignac at the time of his birth and there is no record in these archives of his birth. I have checked the current (Insee = postcode) and past (Archives) village names in the Departments of Aube (10), Ardenne (8), Marne (51) and Haute Marne (52) that make up the region of Champagne-Ardenne (a large part of which was known as Champagne until the 1790s). My own family came from Aube. I would be interested to know where this village of Frontignac that you refer to is located. What villages is it near?

Unfortunately, as well as being a forger, he appears to have been “a little careless with the truth” as evidenced by the interview he had with a Monsieur Peron a visiting French journalist so this makes it even harder to track his French ancestry.
I hope that above info is of some assistance to you and wish you luck in tracking his ancestry down!!!
Am researching my family. I am a direct decendant of Ferdinand Meurant and have noticed the (2008) message re Ferdiand's parents. You say that Louis and Jean are not his parents and that their decendants in France claim they had one son Joseph born in 1863?? This is 100 years after they were married. Also I have located Frontignac Champaigne as a separate village to Frontignan. Could not Ferdinand have been born there with the parents moving or living at Andreze in Maine et Loire?
Is there any update on their relationship to Ferdinand? Recent research does seem to establish that they were his parents.
Charmaine

My grandmother told me the maori ggg grandmother was the daughter of a chief. Looking foreward to hearing from you. Diane.

I do not know what happened, but this Ancestry.com message board automatically posted my last message before I was finished. --- No problem, I guess. At least what I wrote sounded OK.

Here is the rest of my message:

The Archives départmentales de la Haute-Saône, where the records of your city Champlitte-la-Ville are located, is one of my least favorite websites for archives in France. This is because they only digitized the microfilms of the Mormons and put them online, and they made no effort to index the years of make them easy to use for researchers and navigation is not easy. The images of the birth, marriage, and death records look exactly like the microfilms - which is OK, but is it takes far too much time and effort for me to do free look-ups for people who post to Message Boards like this one.

However, using this website will not be too much work for you because you are looking for records of your own ancestor! (big smile!)

Here is the website for the Archives départementales de la Haute-Saône, where you can find your records of Champlitte-sur-Ville:

http://archives.cg70.fr/

I wish you much success!

Bonne quête !

Hello again,

I went the site of the Departemental Archives of Haute-Marne to look for your ancestor. The website has all of the état civil for Saulles online, which was good, however, Tables décennales (Ten-year indexes) are not online, so I had to search the annual indexes at the end of each year's records.

Here are all of the births of people named Auvigne between 1833 and 1860:

08 Feb 1833 - Appolline
29 May 1833 - François
15 Mar 1836 - Marie Catherine
16 Aug 1939 - Pierre
14 Feb 1845 - Marie-Appolline
06 Apr 1845 - Marie-Anne
23 Sep 1846 - Jean-Baptiste Simon
18 Oct 1854 - Jean-Baptiste Simon
01 Dec 1860 - Marie-Augustine

As you can see, there was no one named « Auguste Symphorien Auvigne » born in 1847, or nearby years.

You can look at the records yourself. The website for the Archives départementals de la Haute-Marne is free to use. Here is the link:

http://archives.haute-marne.fr/subset.html?name=etat-civil
(This would be a bit like the difference between the records of Kansas and of Missouri. They are not together.)

When you ask for information, be sure to always include the names of the départments.

I will write again later.

Amicalement

You're welcome! ;)

As for Jean Baptiste's ancestry, yes I think so, provided he was really your ancestor and not just an homonym. If so, Charles was in fact born in France (in St.Thomas parish of La Flèche, departement of Sarthe) while his wife Marianne BASTARACHE is said to be born in Port-Royal. Her parents were from Bayonne, in the "Basque Country", an area of France near the Spanish frontier which has a strong cultural identity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basque_Country_%28greater_regio...

I've found many different birth dates for Charles Orillon which can be explained because we don't have the original parish records anymore for this period. Only indexes survived but there is listed a baptism for one Charles ORILLON on April 29, 1666.

These data seem quite correct: http://gw3.geneanet.org/proulxd1?lang=en&p=charles&n...

You'll find Sarthe archives on-line here: http://www.archives.sarthe.com/etatcivil.asp
- choose FLECHE (LA) to get the list of all available records
- microfilm 1Mi_270_R01: parish St. Thomas, répertoire des baptêmes garçons /filles = baptisms index boys/girls (an V = 1797)
. page 58: Charles Orillon baptism listed (29 avril 1666)
. page 235: Marriage of Julien "Apurillon" et Anne Roger (14 sept 1659)
. page 33: Baptism of Jullien Aurillon (20 avril 1633)

Also, one of their Canadian descendent, Michèle CHAMPAGNE has studied this family in details for many years and she's even published a book about them: http://www.societedesecrivains.com/librairie/livre.php?isbn=...

. more about the book: http://www.lecourriersud.com/Culture/Arts-et-spectacles/2012...
. her articles about the family: http://www.histoire-genealogie.com/spip.php?auteur189
. about pioneers coming from La Flèche: http://sarthegw.free.fr/pionnier/p_fleche.php
. about pioneers from Sarthe: http://sarthegw.free.fr/pionnier/pionnier.php

Sorry, all this is in French but you'll get at least an idea of the content with http://translate.google.fr/#fr|en|

Good reading!
Amandine
Thank you very much for all of the great information! I did find a baptism record for Jean Baptiste Orillon born 23 Nov 1704,Port Royale, his parents are Charles Orillon and Marie Anne Bastarache. Is this correct? If so then it states that Charles birthplace is Canada and MArie Anne as born in France.

I will continue to search, but thank you again.

Julie Ann

Hello Julie,

I don't think this family has much to do with the Champagne region but anyway, looking around, I've found a discussion about probably the same couple which indicated their marriage:

Union 1797 in Lachine (district of Montreal) : LORION CHAMPAGNE Charles & GUIGNE BOURGUIGNON Josephe

source: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/QUEBEC-RESEARC...

PRDH is a research program in historical demography from the university of Montreal: http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/

The same marriage is mentioned on http://www.mesaieux.com/defaultAn.asp (parents names & more available but you'll have to buy vouchers to get it):
1797 - Lachine - Marriage Charles LORION & Josephte GUINEE

and again on ancestry.ca with the spelling Charles LORION & Josephe GUINEE

Finally, found the whole ancestry here: http://www.mwlandry.ca/genealog/familygroup.php?familyID=F38...

Charles ORILLON (b. Aug 24, 1766 Berthier-en-Haut, Berthier, Québec, Can), son of Charles ORILLON dit CHAMPAGNE & Marie-Josèphe LAUZET married on Feb 6, 1797 in Lachine (Jacques-Cartier, Québec, Canada) Marie-Josèphe GUINÉE, daughter of André GUINÉE & Charlotte GAUDON.

Charles ORILLON dit CHAMPAGNE in turn is the son of Jean-Baptiste ORILLON dit CHAMPAGNE b. 23 Nov 1704 in Port-Royal (Annapolis, Nouvelle-Écosse, Canada) & Cécile LABAUVE.

Jean-Baptiste had a younger brother also called Charles ORILLON dit CHAMPAGNE, born in 1713 in Acadia, who took refuge in Quebec to escape the "Great Upheaval" of 1755: the expulsion of the Acadians by the English. Finding refuge in Quebec (Canada), ORILLON dit CHAMPAGNE are considered one of the pioneer families of the Acadian region of Nicolet, near Trois-Rivières. Their father, bearing the same first name, Charles (ORILLON), was of French origin, born in the town of La Flèche (nowadays in the French département of Sarthe).

More about this family and their ancestry: http://www.histoire-genealogie.com/article.php3?id_article=6...
It's in French so you might prefer the Google translation: http://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=... but beware, it also tends to translate people and town names (ex. Orillon dit Champagne > Orillon said Champagne).

The original surname spelling in France would be Aurillon, which became Orillon, Orion, Lorion, etc. in Canada. Champagne is in fact a kind of surname, generally linked with the individual origin or character. In this case, it would come from the "en Champagne" part of many villages names around La Flèche, which were once part of the Champagne Mancelle territory.

About the "dit names": http://genealogy.about.com/b/2010/07/08/understanding-dit-na...

About André GUIGNE/GUÉNIER dit BOURGUIGNON:
- http://www.marcel-fournier.com/index.php/genealogie/temoigna...

Of course, you should check all the original records for eventual mistakes but I think all this will at least give you some leads.

Good searches!
Amandine

I am also interested in where Pierre/Etienne Huyet are from. The big question that I have is that there are 2 Charlevilles in France (Ardennes and Marne). Does anyone have a source that confirms Ardennes?

Thanks.

Tony Champagne
Sandra, have you found anything about Charles Dequasie's time in France? Charles is my fifth great-grandfather. I have several land records and censuses for him. But I have never been able to find anything about his origins in France other than what he provides in his American Revolution pension application. I also have not found him listed in records of French soldiers who fought in the Revolution. Would like to exchange any information you may have and vice versa. Thanks.
Linda Vincent
