Hi, My name is Kathryn I live in Liverpool England and I am looking for the birth of my GRT GRT Grandfather who was born in Champagne Ardenne around 1854. His parents are Michael field and Bridget Nowlend who were both born in Liverpool. When they returned to England around 1865 to 1870 he is on record as being a British Subject it appears on the 1871 census. Family stories through the years say that he spoke some English but had a French accent Can anybody help me in finding the date of his birth and did he have any siblings as he seems to be an only child. Also can anybody help with why his parents would of been in France at this time or reason could it be work I also think his Mother Bridget Field (married name) went back and died there Would it be possible if someone could give me an email address or telephone number to the Record Office were I can order certificates for Birth's and Death's I would be grateful for any help or advice Thank you for your time in reading this sorry it is not in French. Kathryn

Hi Kathryn

You will need the name of the Department and the village he was born in. If you have this, each Department has its own archives. See http://memorhom.site.voila.fr/index.htm for links to Departmental archives. Probably the best place to start once you have that info is the "tables decennales" - ten year tables in alphabetic order for birth deaths and marriages for each village. Also there are "recensements" - census for each village that will show who was living in the same house and their relationships - parents, children, servants etc and occupations. This may answer your questions about siblings and what they were doing in France.

Good luck

Hi,thank you for the information but all I know is he was born in a place called Marne, Champagne, Ardenne France about 1854 not sure if this is enough to go on but I found him in Englands 1871 census and not before makes me think he was in France for some time might of been educated there I don't know. Is it possible to get a birth certificate from Marne or do they do look ups. Thanks again for your help. Kathryn

Hi Kathryn

You will need to know the town or village to progress otherwise it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Marne is the name of one of the 4 Departments within the Champagne-Ardenne region. The others are Champagne, Ardenne and Aube (my family's Department).

You may need to work backwards using his marraige or death certificate to get the town or village where he was born in the Marne Department.

I will see what I can find from my sources.

He married a Catherine Murphy in Liverpool in 1883 I have that record and died in 1921 in Liverpool. Michael and Bridget were his parents name hope this helps. Kathryn
