Bretagne surname help

Surnames: Birdwisa
My great grandfather married in Glasgow in 1882, this is the first evidence I have of him. He gave his name as Gustave ( sometimes Agustus) Julian Birdwisa, he could not read or write so his surname will be a phonetic recollection from a Scottish registrar. There are different oral traditions in the various parts of the family., he came from Bordeaux, he came from Brittany. On one Scottish census it states Normandy! Does anyone know of any Bretagne names that sound like Birdwisa?

I have all that information. I'm trying to go further back in time to France, hence looking for help with his real name. Thanks very much for the reply.

You will notice that his daughter in the very first note you sent gives his name as Augustus.
