Help an old lady learn about her mother

Surnames: Mauduit
A family friend (just turned 89 years old) recently told us the story of her childhood.

Her maiden name is Odette Victorene Rosalie Mauduit. She was three when her mother died. Her father re-married and his new wife didn't want children so she was sent to one orphanage and her brother to another. He only recently managed to track her down and make contact just before he died and his granddaughter also recently did so too after learning about the existence of her grandfathers sister on his deathbed.

We know that Odette spent some of her childhood in Fougères in Brittany, although we are not sure where she was born. She now lives in Jersey, Channel Islands.

She is the loveliest lady and her story made me so sad. She only has one semi-torn photograph of her mother and knows so little about her. I'd love to find out more and surprise her with the results. That said - I'm new to all this tracing ancestry lark and have a v small budget!

Can anyone help?

Hi Emily:

Looking for FOUGERES in Brittany, I found it in Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foug%C3%A8res
and I hope this is the place where Odette Victorine Rosalie MAUDUIT is from! I beleive there is PLEINE-FOUGERES, also in the same department.

The archives of Fougeres, Ile-et-Vilaine, are online but only to certain dates. I wanted to look up around 1925 for that must be Odette’s birth year. but it seems that records online stop at 1902; there should be documents online until 1913/1914. The privacy act does not allow information to be divulged unless it’s 100 yrs old and/or 75 yrs old for certain documents.

Here are some links - they are in French but dates and places might allow you to search through.

http://archives-en-ligne.ille-et-vilaine.fr/thot_internet/Fr...
- CLICK on Registres Paroissiaux et Etat Civil - in next window, type FOUGERES then for dates, I typed 1900 to 1930 (select your dates). Select an entry and click on the sign in the last column on the right of the screen.

In the below link you’ll find some MAUDUIT.
Bottom of page, type the number 105 (that’s image 105 of 352) - enlarge the picture - there are 10 MAUDUIT.

If your have more info, let me know. I'll continue searching. Lots of info is online and you do not have to pay anything.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Have a good day!

Lucie

Hi Emily:

What are the first names of Odette's brother? father? and what about her mother's first and last name? all that could help me in searching in the Internet. Do you have access to Ancestry.com?

There are quite a few MAUDUIT and some are de MAUDUIT (nobility).

A bientot.
