My grandmother was a Verrier from England, immigrated to Australia 1912. She spoke of links to Verriers from France which I am hopeful I will link up eventually. I just read your message speaking of a book "Le Verrier" written in 1976 by Pierre Letourmy. Could you please advise me if this book is still available and if so where I can purchase it. Regards, Lyn.

Hello,

I was able to find some birth and marriage records as well as some census entries. It's too much to copy here so I started a family tree so you can just copy it all.

As you will see, I had the most luck with Eugénie Jandard and her family. On the censuses, Jacques Laurent Barratier lists his place of birth as Villars-les-Dombes which is in the Department of Ain, Rhône-Alpes. I have searched there and all surrounding towns and villages, using alternate spellings, etc for birth and military service records but haven't found anything. No birth, marriage or death records are available to the general public after 1902 which doesn't help. Also, since he and Eugénie never married there isn't the great information included on marriage records. I had hoped more information about him would have been included on the children's birth records but no such luck. I'll try to search a few more places.

In the meantime, here's the tree I started using Paul Henri Barratier as the home person:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/51512519/person/13212880091

Hello!
I have commmunicated your e-mailmessage to the town hall of the village whose name by the way has changed in 1958 .The new name is saint laurent sur saone
Here's the text explaining the various names for your wife if she still speaks French

Merci

Denis
Nouvelle-Écosse
Canada

Hopefully I have the right message board for that location. Are there online records available for this region like the ones for Bas-Rhin?
Also if anyone can help translate this document attached, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not sure what it is for...perhaps probate records since it is dated 1829 and Mathieu died in 1824. His wife was Elizabeth Luck.

Dear Debbie,
I think we are cousins. My grandfather Enea Girardon and your grandfather were brothers, Giovanni was their father. I woluld love to get in touch with you, I came accross this by chance but have always wanted to trace my relatives. I have three sisters, we are daughters of Silla, only son of Enea Romolo Girardon. You are quite correct, they were from Mestre, although originally from Venice itself. They moved to Mestre after Giovanni died and Emma, his wife, remarried and whent to live there with her three sons. She later had a doughter, Gina. Please, if you get this get in touch!!!!
Hello Julia,

Nowadays, "un enfant naturel" is indeed a natural child, whose parents are not married together.

But the expression "enfant légitime et naturel" had not the same meaning at this time, it meant only the parents were legally married together, as indicates the 1835 Dictionnaire de l'Académie française (http://books.google.fr/books?id=2ks_AAAAcAAJ&pg=PA255&am...):

Legitimate and natural child = One born of a legitimate marriage, as opposed to the illegitimate child and the adoptive child.

It only meant the filiation was both natural (for the mother) and legitimate (for the father) as any child born from a married couple is automatically regarded as the husband's child.

I don't know why the priest only used the double expression at some times and not always though. Note that it is not used everywhere either, as I've rarely met it in my own researches.

As for the marriage record, if there is no missing period in the registers, it could simply be the wife came from another town, probably nearby. The wedding almost always take place in the bride homeplace if they're from different towns. After the marriage, it's not uncommon they go live at the groom place and/or with his family.

You can use http://www.locom.org/loc_dep.htm to search for neighbouring villages or this new website/service: http://recel.geonames.org/?

The latter one will help you access any French town archives available on-line as well and let you see the surrounding villages. Type the first letter of the town name, then choose the good one. The "Dans un rayon de 10 km" list show a local area map if you hover your mouse over it, and offers easy access to these nearby towns archives as well!

Bonnes recherches !
Amandine

baptismal record legitime et naturelle

My family member, Marie Bertoux [Berthoud], was baptised on 14 February 1721 in Matour, Saone-et Loire, Bourgogne. The record states, at folio 137 of BSM 1707-1727, 'Marie fille legitime et naturelle de Vincent Bertoux et de Jeanne de la fay...'. Other records have both legitime and naturelle, but most just have legitime. Does this mean that Marie was born prior to her parents' marriage?, which I have been unable to locate in Matour.

Julia in Oz

Makes perfect sense. Thanks for giving me a head's up. I have found a lot of information on my ancestors in the Ariege from a Yahoo group that specializes in genealogy in that area. A very nice man sent me photos of actual pages of the mairie records for my grandmother's village, then translated them into English for me. I was able to trace my direct ancestors from 1910 all the way back to 1803 and earlier.

No, you won't find any vital records less than 100 years old online. The CNIL (French administrative authority ensuring privacy laws are respected) ruled that nothing of less than 100 years should be put on-line, even if the legal "public access" time period is lesser (as for death certificates for example).
