Laneyrie Saône et Loire 1807 on

Hello,

I am trying to gather some detailed information about my great great grandparents.

They were Joseph Louis Laneyrie and Annette Mathey from Saône et Loire, Bourgogne . They went search for gold in California, then later in Australia... Annette arrived in Melbourne in July 1854 with her small son (Joseph Louis Jnr) and baby daughter Claudine. They travelled from London to Hobart, on the 'City of Hobart', then transited to Melbourne, where Annette put a missing persons advertisement when she was attempting to locate her husband. They spend 8 years lost on the goldfields of Victoria, eventually settling in Forbes NSW Australia.

Joseph and Annette were married in Jan 1842 in France. This was Joseph's second marriage, he had previously been married to Jeanne Margue.

I understand some work has been written by Jack Clarence Smith based partially on letters written between Joseph and his daughter (from his first marriage). Joseph's daughter was a nun, Sister Angelina.

Can anyone help me locate this work, or provide me with more information about their life in France.

Thank you for taking the time to read the post.

Frances Laneyrie (Australia)

Hello, could you give us some more clues for your search ?
From where Jack Clarence Smith could be : australian, european ? Where may he published ? In what type of opus ?
Have you any idea about the places where Joseph and Annette could be from in France, or where did they live ?
The birth and mariage (BMS) records are freely available on line for this region, as well as the census.

What about the 1807 date ?
Hope you still have some nuggets !

I haven't been able to find anything published by a Jack Clarence Smith. Are you sure that was his name? Was he an Australian?

I was able to find all the records for the family and am attaching them all. This information they provide is:

Joseph Louis Laneyrie was born 4 October 1807 in Chaintré,Saône-et-Loire to Antoine Laneyrie and Benoîte Chamonard.

Anne Mathey was born 21 February 1821 in Chânes, Saône-et-Loire to Joseph Mathey and Anne Large.

Joseph Louis Laneyrie married Jeanne Margue on 26 April 1833 in Crêches, Saône-et-Loire. They had three children:

1. Jeanne Marie Antoinette born in Chaintré on 28 February 1834 and died in Chaintré on 11 March 1834.

2. Benoît Eléonore born in Chaintré on 23 July 1835. When she became a nun she took the name Sister Angeline.

3. Louis-Marie born in Chaintré on 4 May 1841 and died in Chaintré on 15 February 1845.

Jeanne Margue died on 6 July 1841 in Chaintré.

Joseph Louis then married Anne Mathey on 27 January 1842 in Chânes. They had two children in France:

1. Louis Joseph born in Chaintré on 14 February 1845.

2. Claudine born in Chânes on 19 March 1852 in the home of her maternal grandfather. The birth record indicates that her father was in San Francisco at the time.

On the 1841 Census of Chaintré it shows:

Laneyrie, Louis Joseph, wine merchant (widowed)
Laneyrie, Louis, his son
Laneyrie, Eléonore, his daughter
Laneyrie, Louis-Marie, his brother, a cooper
Margue, Antoine, his brother-in-law, a cooper
Chamonard, Benoîte, his widowed mother
Laneyrie, Anne, his sister, a domestic servant

On the 1946 Census of Chaintré it shows:

Laneyrie. Louis, merchant, head of household, age 38
Mathey, Anne, his wife, age 24
Laneyrie, Louis, his son, age 15 months
Laneyrie, Eléonore, his daughter, age 10 years

Hope that's of some help.

Cheers,

Soosi

Bravo for this detailed information.
By the way, Frances would have been kind to precise the data she has already fetched in order to avoid double work. Thankfully, she has made it available on Geneanet.org.
In the 1846 census, the father, Jacques Mathey (55 years old) and mother Anne Large (54 years old) of Anne Mathey are still in Chânes with 3 children (Jacques 26 yo, Claudine 20 yo, Benoit 16 yo). Jacques Mathey is the mayor of Chânes. In the village there are also Barthelemy Mathey 85 yo and Jeanne Trouillard 84 yo, his wife, maybe, the parents.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for all this work Micahel and Soosi . This has made this a perfect day for me.

Jack Clarence-Smith passed away on 25 January, 2003. His farewell Mass was on 31 January, at the Saint Madeline Church in Charnay Les Macon. His wife Mijane was still alive in 2010 and living in Macon, France.

According to a limitied edition book I have called "Laneyries in Australia 1853-2010" the title of Jack's book is "La Famille De Laneyrie, Laneyrie En Australie". Jack's book may also been a privately published one.

There is also a reference in the Laneyies in Australia book to a series of letters written between Joseph Louis and Sister Angelina. The last dated letter is recorded at 8th September 1874. My understanding is that 'Sister Angelina' was placed in a convent in France after her mother Jeanne Margue passed away and eventually joined the Order, but she and her father corresponded regularly. There are no details about which convent she was placed in. So, I hope these letters must exist somewhere.

I may be able to travel to France in July this year, so hoped that if I could locate any of this material I might be able to review it.

Thanks to help on another forum I had been able to locate material from http://www.archives71.fr/article.php?larub=29# but it is a very slow process because of my very limited understanding of French. (I expect my ability to at least read French is going to improve very quickly). So the inclusion of documents by Soosi is just fantastic.

Again, thank you both so much,
warm regards Frances

Hello Frances!

I found a treasure at the Archives of Saône-et-Loire: "Fonds des familles Laneyrie et Bouteloup" which has all sorts of things about the Laneyries. Here's a link:

http://www.archives71.fr/arkotheque/inventaires/ead_resultat...

Under where it says "Recherche libre" in the box next to "Mots clés" enter "Laneyrie" then click on the RECHERCHER". You will then see a page with the various items regarding Laneyries the Archives hold. They all look interesting but the "Etat des fonds" is the one with Jack Clarence Smith's writings. The are two pink buttons to the right of it - click on the one that has two pages and it will take you to its description. It includes a PDF file that describes all the contents:

http://www.archives71.fr/_depot_cg71_imgs/AD71EAD/33J.pdf

Number 6 is Marie-Jeanne Laneyrie and his Australian descendants:
correspondence with J.-A.-C. Smith (1960-1967) and includes correspondence, post-cards, clippings and other things.

I would write to the Archives and ask if you can get copies of any of it. You could also make arrangements to view the whole thing if you go over in July.

They also have an online email form:

http://www.archives71.fr/article.php?laref=148&titre=con...

You can try writing them in English, apologizing that you do not speak French, or you could post a message on the French forums asking if someone would translate your message into French for you. I'd offer but I'm not the best at writing/speaking - I'm fairly good at translating but just don't ask me to speak - lol.

In the meantime I'll see if I can track down the convent Sister Angelina might have been in.

Best wishes,

Soosi

Hello Frances, no problem if you wish to have a message translated for the Archives Départementales in Macon or even a call to them. They are very helpful, but you need to plan the documents you wish to see, in order to make them available for you at the time of your coming. I live in the south of France so I cannot go there. French is my mother tongue. Nice research to Soosi.

Dear Soosi and Michel .... amazing ...

How can I ever thank you for the work you have done on my behalf.
I have spent the day writing and attempting to integrate the information you both have sent so far into the story as I understand it. My particular interest is the women in our family and trying to create some social history around their lives. This meant trying to understand where they originally came from and how much they left behind (especially important relationships) when they moved to Australia. ...

Already the information has changed about Anne Mathey... Oh what a life she must have had. 1) - she must have lost Joseph and Jeanne's youngest child one day before her own child was born.... 2) Eleonore (her step daughter) must have lived with her father and step mother until they decided to seek gold in California (rather than being placed in a convent right after her mother's death).... there's more but I should not get side tracked here.

Soosi, I'm not sure I can ever repay your kindness, how on earth did you locate the information about the archives so quickly. I have been trying to locate some information about this for some time, with no luck. Thank you, thank you, thank you...

and Michel, your information has also given me some rather extra unexpected connections to think about.

Your advice on approaching the Archives Departementales is much appreciated... libraries here in Australia are the same. Planning and prior notice are essential.
I will try in English first, they will need to know that I am handicapped with my lack of French. I will also try to find someone locally who might be able to help with translation of documents. Our local university has a French department, and I think I might be able to make a connection through them.

I'm off to check out the links Soosi sent before I head for bed... its rather late here

warm regards Frances

Hello Frances!

It's my very great pleasure to have been able to help and your appreciation is the only repayment I'll ever need.

I was searching all the hard to locate, out-of-print, self-published places I could find, with no luck. Then it occurred to me that the Saône et Loire Archives may have something in their collection and, voila!, there they were. Thanks goodness someone (or maybe more than one person) donated these things to the Archives.

Good luck with your research and please let me know all you uncover. I find it very interesting. I'm off to continue my search for Sister Angelina and her convent. Will keep you posted.

With warmest wishes,

Soosi

Hello,
here are two pages of the Chânes 1841 census. Anne (Annette) is still there.
Joseph is already mayor. (I previously misread Joseph as Jacques)
And the mariage Mathey-Large on 30/12/1812 confirm Barthelemy as father and Jeanne Trouillard as mother.
Regards
sorry for the quality, but pdf are not accepted, if useful, I can send them with geneanet.
