What a fascinating thread. I would love to know how you are related to William Rowe as he was my G x 3 Grandfather.

You mention that he is your ancestor

William Rowe married Eliza Russell in 1842 in Langport

Their children:
Mary Elizabeth Rowe Born 1845 Langport Somerset
Louisa Rowe Born 1847 Langport Somerset m John Darby
William Rowe Born 13/11/1850 Alderney m Leonie Quinain
Sophia Rowe Born 30/3/1854 Alderney
Matilda Rowe Born 4/4/1857 Alderney m Joseph Laine
Alfred John Rowe Born 16/4/1860 Alderney m Mary Falla
Amelia Jane Rowe Born 18/2/1863 Alderney

The Rowe's moved to Alderney between 1847 and 1850. William was a Gardener.

William Rowe died in Alderney on 4/11/1877. Eliza Rowe between 1881 and 1891 (date not known)

I do not know what happened to Mary Rowe, she disappears from trace after the 1871 Census.

Sophia Rowe, I lose any trace of after the 1871 Census also

Louisa Rowe moved to Northamptonshire in the 1860's (she had a position as a Domestic for a family there) and married John Darby in 1868 and went on to have 9 children there. She died in 1911.

Alfred Rowe moved to Guernsey circa 1883. He married Mary Falla in Guernsey and had 11 children of which 7 survived infancy.

Amelia Rowe was my G x 2 Grandmother she moved to Guernsey in 1881 with her sister Matilda Rowe. They were Dressmakers.

Amelia died in 1883 of TB in Guernsey and Matilda stayed marrying a Mr Laine in 1886 in Guernsey. Matilda did not have any children, but looked after Amelia's son after she died (my Great Grandfather)

William Rowe as we know married Leonie Quinain and had 3 children, they also moved to Guernsey, but William and Leonie returned to Alderney after 1901. I don't know what happened to their eldest son William Alfred Rowe. In 1891 he was working in the Quarries in Guernsey but there is no trace of him by 1901 anywhere.

Daughter Louisa Rowe married George Clemence in Guernsey. They moved to Islington London with their children and had 2 more in Islington. Louisa died Q4 1918.

(My records have her being Louisa Felicity Rowe rather than Louisa Mary Ann Rowe though)

John Rowe (known also as Jack) was still in Guernsey by 1911 for he had married Hilda Parsons, but I don't know what happened to him post 1911.

Look forward to hearing from you

Sounds similar to the story that I've heard about my Letellier family history. They left Francce & went to Belgium because the King wanted control of their money & land. I've been working for ages trying to get into the family line into Belgium & then into France. My part of the Letellier family came from Belgium to the United States. We're supposedly descended from the aristocracy in France during the time of King Louis. So frustrating!!

Here is what I have gathered and speculated upon...something to think about...

Anthoine DuBose is assumed to have died before 1742 in South Carolina, when he is not listed in his mother's estate, but he could possibly have been the Anthony DeBusk of North Carolina, supposed father of Jacob DeBusk (c. 1734) of Washington County, Virginia. No "proof" has been found, but DNA similarity indicates a possible connection because of 12/12 markers between Debusk and DuBose DNA contributors.

This death date is not proven so I believe that he went to North Carolina as a Anthoine DeBose is found in the Cape Fear area of North Carolina. This Anthoine DeBose is said to have come from South Carolina with other families. It is known that Antoine or Anthony lived in Wilmington, North Carolina and had property in what is now Pender County.

The DuBose name is found spelled Debusk, Debuske, Debow, Debose, Dubose, Debark, and others, in the Pender County, North Carolina area.

I just released a book entitled "Long Journey Home: The Ancestry of the Bret, Coco, Drapeau, Goudeau, Gremillon and Tassin Families in France". The Gremillion section is about 50 pages long and provides 175 years of the ANCESTRY of Louis Gremillion in France. The lineage is extensively documented and the goes back 8 generations from Louis' baptism. The book is FULLY documented and pics of the sacramental records are provided. http://www.louisianalineage.com/longjourneyhome.htm FB: https://www.facebook.com/LongJourneyHome THANKS!
Rather than Exilda Ouellet, cannot it be Azilda Ouellet married to Georges Delisle, Ile Verte 1879.
Il y a peut-être erreur sur le nom de Exilda Ouellet: Plutôt Azilda Ouellet marié à Georges Delisle, et qui sont mes arrières grands parents.

Salut !,

First, La Rochelle is not located in Manche, Basse-Normandie. (That is like saying "Dallas in Massachusetts" or "Vancouver in Québec.") Either your city or your departement in France is not correct. You would benefit by looking at your source again to get the correct information.

If your ancestor is from La Rochelle, the record may be easily available online at the departemental archives of Charente-Maritime. There are seven large Catholic churches in La Rochelle to search, each with their own collections of parish registers. Access to the digitized records is free. The website is available here:

http://charente-maritime.fr/CG17/jcms/cg17_47603/les-archive...

If your ancestors are from Manche, Basse-Normandie, the Catholic parish registers that survive have been digitized and are available online at FamilySearch.org. (You will need to know the town or parish where your ancestor lived.) Access to the digitized records is free. The website is available here:

https://www.familysearch.org/

There are many places you can access the Drouin and Tanguy records online. If you have a membership to Ancestry.com you already have access to them. Simply go to the Ancestry Card Catalogue, then, type in « Drouin » or « Tanguay » in Search Titles, then click Search, and choose your collection.

If you are near a good library, the Drouin and Tanguay books are probably there for you to search as well, and if not, you can get them through inter-library loans in the states or Canada. If you live in the UK or Australia, they may be found in libraries of largest cities. A librarian can help you.

The Canadian records you are looking for are also indexed and available online at Le PRDH (Le Programme de recherche en démographie historique), Université de Montréal. You can access their terrific database here (French or English):

http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/fr/

Regarding Paris : More than 70% of the parish registers for the city of Paris (only) before 1860 were destroyed in fires by the Communards in 1871. Unfortunately, all of the parish records for Saint-Benoît in Paris were lost and none survive. Your Paris information must come from a Canadian marriage or death record you can find in Drouin at Ancestry.com, or the PRDH.

You now have access to all of the files you were looking for, to, as you say, « tap into » !

Cheers to you !

Bonne quête !
Re: Is there a place called "Le Thie" or similar in Basse-Normandie?

Amelia,

On the official Manche Departement Archives website, there is listed the following:

Thiel (Le)

The good news is that the births/marriages/death records for Manche are available to view free online. I did my own casual search and came up with some records for Le Thiel covering the dates when your ancestor may have been born. I couldn't find a 'Tables Decennales' for the period covering 1776, which is a shame, as it would have provided an alphabetical list of the names of all births/marriages/deaths for the given period and would have hopefully been fairly quick and easy to search through.

However, I did trace a file which contains the original births/marriages/deaths registrations for the period 1770 to 1780. Unfortunately, the handwriting and layout of these old records makes them VERY challenging to decipher, particularly if you can't read basic French and have no prior experience of reading very old French etat civil documents. I couldn't help having a quick browse through the 1776 records. I have to say I didn't spot the name of your relative (Allis) but that does not mean it isn't there. There is also the possibility that he was born the year before or after 1776 so you might want to check those records too. Thankfully the populations of these little communes were small so checking a year's worth of births/marriages/deaths doesn't take a great deal of time if you are determined enough, but trying to READ what the writing says slows the process down considerably.

Here is a link to my search results:

http://recherche.archives.manche.fr/?id=recherche_etat_civil...

Hopefully on the right of the page that opens, you will see a file called 5 Mi 1928 containing 116 images. Click on that to open it. The death records seem to be recorded separately, whereas the births and marriages are all mixed together, often on the same page with little space between the entries. The relevant pages for births and marriages in 1776 are from page 61 through to page 67. There is a little slider at the bottom of the viewer. Move it right to advance through the pages. Maybe you could try searching for some other 'Tables Decennales' files for Le Thiel for different dates and check through the surnames listed to see if your family name occurs, because there might be other births/marriages/deaths for your family that happened there.

Of course this could just be the wrong location and you won't find anything at all!

To do another search of the Manche archives, try this link and then choose which location you're interested in from the drop down box, then enter some dates and press 'Rechercher'.

http://recherche.archives.manche.fr/?id=recherche_etat_civil

NB- THERE IS ANOTHER LOCATION CALLED LE TEILLEUL WHICH I HAVEN'T CHECKED SO YOU COULD HOPEFULLY RESEARCH THAT ONE YOURSELF.

Jerry

Oh, my goodness! You KNEW her ? She seems to have been quite a character, and I would be most interested in any information you could share about her because the news stories about her have been fascinating. In fact, one of them suggested that she had an adopted daughter, but I was then never able to find
anything more about it, so assumed it was in error. However, we know that one should never assume. Thanks so much for answering this query.

Jeanne

Hi, It looks like I am one of those American cousins. My father and I were quite surprised to find that we had distant European cousins. My great grand-father was Hancock Griffin. It looks like he was Priscilla Griffin's brother. We have never heard anything concerning Priscilla. We do however have a lot of information concerning Eugene Griffin, and Winfield Scott Hancock. I have been researching these figures for quite a while and would be happy to send along any information that might interest any of you. It is a pleasure to learn more about this family.

Pierre Roy: Birth 23 Oct 1638 inLa Rochelle, Manche, Basse-Normandie, France Death 28 Oct 1721 inMontréal, Quebec, Canada
Married to....
Catherine Ducharme: Birth 1657 inSt Benoit, Paris, Ile-de-France, France Death 21 Feb 1719 inMontréal, Quebec, Canada

I am attempting to solidify the parents of Pierre Roy. Given the time period, I am challenged to find actual documentation of the marriage in attempts to solidfy the parents involved with the wedding. Some sources have led me to a Charles Roy, it has been referenced as a Charles Le Roy as well. He apparently had a spouse known by Jeanne Boyer (1615-1672?) in 1635. I have no media source verifiying this.

The references to Charles are apparently within the following sources:
Dictionnaire National des Canadiens Français, Gabriel Drouin, (Institut Drouin (American-French Genealogical Society now has rights)), page 1196
Dictionnaire National des Canadiens Français, Gabriel Drouin, (Institut Drouin (American-French Genealogical Society now has rights)), page 1205
Dictionnaire généalogique des Familles Canadiennes depuis la fondation de la colonie jusqu’à nos jours., Tanguay, Father Cyprien, (First edition. Eusèbe Senéchal, Imprimeur-Éditeur. Quebec. 1871.), Vol. I, Page 533

I do not have access to these files, and I can't read french to any substantial degree. I would love top tap in the parents of Charles (le?) Roy and Jeanne Boyer. I am trying to see if there is Scottish clan blending, but I need to get about to the 1400's to accomplish.

If you have any incites, I would love aid.

Thanks!

Bryan Roy

Edmee Nodot, b. either 1896 or 1892 at LeHavre

We have conflicting information from newspapers and a death certificate about the birth date for Lady Edmee Nodot Owen MacCall, who died in London, and who was born in Le Havre. One birth date we have in April, 1896. We seek verified birth date and parents' names. Currently, we have her in our Caroline Bjorkander Family Tree as being born 1896 , and passenger lists seem to confirm that. However, Lady Edmee definitely exaggerated and embellished....so we're checking because we think the death cert may be wrong: she had no children, to our knowledge. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Jeanne (jnrollberg@aol.com)

Bonjour Arnaud,

Merci encore,

Arnaud
