Hi, I am trying to find more information about my French ancestors.

My great, great grandfather, Theophile Semblat de Tenon was born on the 2nd of February, 1839 in Bordeaux, Gironde, Aquitaine, France.

His parents were Guillaume (William) de Tenon, a Doctor of Medicine and Marie Semblat. On Theophile's marriage certificate his Father's name is written as Guyon, however this is more than likely a phonetic spelling of Guillaume.

I would like to find out more information about this line in my family.

Kind regards,
L.D

I used Lucq De Bearn to acquire the above link, 1800- 1910, as an example.
If Lucq de Bearn pasges don't help, the other villages nearby can be searched. Start to type Oloron Sainte Marie in the nom geographique box, and it will appear underneath with all the villages listed.
http://earchives.cg64.fr/etat-civil-search-form.html

You can specify a time frame, too.

Good luck!

Neither Lucq De Bearn nor Oloron Sainte Marie are listed in the villages included in the Pau Archives that are online in the reference I sent to you.
Here is the list.
There is an online database for Pau, and the surrounding communities. There are sections for a kind of census, and some data on births, deaths and marriages. The pages are in French, but I was able to find my families.
http://archives.agglo-pau.fr/4DCGI/Web_RegistresLance/ILUMP3...

If the link doesn't direct click, you can copy and past it into your browser. This page lists links to the archives for Pau and the surrounding communities. If you know your people were from Idron, you can click on that link. There are, for example, two databases, and you can view the registers, and browse for your family data.
If you have know the town the family was from, I can send that link or browse for you. I don't speak French, really, but I may be able to locate something useful.

I wish you the very best of luck.

DeeElle

Hello Beth!
I'm very glad to hear from you and that this information was useful to you! I remember very well this research, I might have gone a little overboard but you know how it is, when you're on a roll...

Anyway, if you plan to visiting this summer, you'll do well to check any place you intend to go to beforehand to be sure they'll be open (most are closed in August). Don't hesitate to contact or visit the association if you can, I'm sure they'll try to help you if possible.

Also, I've checked the Gironde Archives website again and good news, they've put the passports records (1800-1889) on-line! As surmised, the DUTRUCH family is amongst them, for the year 1861 (October 2), but the destination is Vitoria (Spain). No idea why they would go there first.

Here's the direct link: http://gael.gironde.fr/ead.html?id=FRAD033_IR_4M_745_757&amp...

> Passports for abroad • 4 M 745-757
>> july-december 1861 • 4 M 746
>>> Jean Dutruch passport • 4 M 746/526

In case the link doesn't work, I've uploaded the picture here: http://www.mediafire.com/view/?dc11kksuspl1y12

Content (many words abbreviated):

---
GENERAL POLICE
PASSPORT FOR ABROAD
Departement of
Register - No.1014

DESCRIPTION
Mr. DUTRUCH Jean, cooper
his wife born GUIMBELLOT Marie, 3 children: Jean 13 years old, Raymond 12, Jean 7 years old
native of St Loubès
living in St Loubès
going to Vitoria, Spain
aged 47 years old, height 1m62
hair: brown - forehead: oval
eyebrow: brown - eyes: russet?
nose: long - mouth: average
beard: ? - chin: round
face: oval - coloring: light

DISTINCTIVE SIGNS: none

FILED PIECES: ???

Done in Bordeaux, on October 2, 1861
---

Let me know if you need further help.

Best wishes,
Amandine
She being french and understands the language whereas I am limited in comprehending and reading French, she is the best one to continue on with the search.

Your leads are invaluable in our pursuit to learn about our Descaray or whatever the origin of that name was. Marie said that she was going to go to the villages that you provided for us.

If I can be of assistance to you for any research here in the U.S. please ask, and I will do due diligence in your stead.

Bob Mazeres

Salut !

I found more information for you. (Maybe you have it already?) It is the second marriage of your Jean DESCARAY (after your Marguerite SAFFORE died) to Marie-Anne CROUSEILLES (her second marriage); and I found Marie-Anne CROUSEILLES's first marriage to Jacques BIGARD.

I tried to access the servers of the Archives départementales des Pyrénées-Atlantiques today, but they have a big problem and they took them down for maintenance. So, I can't see the original data right now and maybe all weekend until they are back up.

However, here are the index entries for these two marriages from my books :

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

État Civil - Acte de mariage
Date de l'acte : 14/03/1876
Lieu de l'acte : Estialescq (64)
SUJET : DESCARAY Jean
Père : DESCARAY Pierre
Mère : SAFFORES Marguerite
Infos complémentaires : Veuf de: MALERODE Marie
Né(e) le : 22/01/1826 à LUCQ
CONJOINT : CROUSEILLES Marie-Anne
Infos complémentaires :
Témoins: PECAUT Pierre
LASSALLETTE Jean
INFOS COMPLEMENTAIRES
Date et lieu de décès Père sujet : le 24/09/1855 a Lucq
Date et lieu de décès Mère sujet : le 29/01/1835 a Lucq

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

État Civil - Acte de mariage
Date de l'acte : 26/01/1865
Lieu de l'acte : Estialescq (64)
SUJET : BIGARD Jacques
Père : BIGARD Pierre
Mère : CAZADABAN Marie
Infos complémentaires : Né(e) le : 10/11/1828 à ESTIALESCQ
Métier : Cultivateur
Métier Père : Laboureur
Métier Mère : Cultivatrice
CONJOINT : CROUSEILLES Marie-Anne
Infos complémentaires :
Témoins: DURRUTY Jean-Joseph
DURRUTY Henri
INFOS COMPLEMENTAIRES
Date et lieu de décès Père sujet : le 06/05/1840
Date et lieu de décès Mère sujet : le 19/12/1858

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

If you can get this data yourself when the servers go back online, great.

But, if you need me to extract the rest of the data from the actual records, or if you need my help to get digital images of these or any other original records (birth, death, or whatever) simply send me me a note. I will try my best to get them for you as soon as is possible.

Bien amicalement

Descaray-Malerode - Maybe I found it!

Salut !

I looked one more place, and I think I found it ! And, the mayor spelled your name your way on the original record : Descaray ! (I found it indexed as : Escaray - Ah-hah !)

The digitized image of this original record is available at the website I gave you at the bottom of my previous message. So, I looked for it and found it. The original marriage certificate is extensive, about 1-1/2 pages. Here is my extraction for you :

Archives départementales des Pyrénées-Atlantique
Image : Verdets (no. 643/1231)

État Civil - Acte de mariage (Civil marriage)
Date de l'acte (date of marriage) : 25 Nov 1852
Lieu de l'acte (place of marriage) : Verdets (Pyrénées-Atlantique)

SUJET (groom) : DESCARAY Jean
Père (father) : DESCARAY Pierre (70 ans / years old)
Mère (mother) : SAFFORE Marguerite (décédée à / died in LUCQ-DE-BEARN on 29 Jan 1835)
Agé (age of groom) : 26 ans / years old
Date de naissance (groom's birthdate) : -- (not recorded)
Lieu de naissance (groom's birthplace) : LUCQ-DE-BEARN
Domicilié (groom's residence) : LAUCÈDE (?? possibly in Archdiocese of Narbonne, Saint-Jacques-de-Laucède - stated in 3 places)
Métier (groom's occupation) : Domestique (household servant)
Métier Père (father's occupation) : Journalier (day laboureur)

CONJOINT (bride) : MALERODE Marguerite
Père (father) : INCONNU (Unknown - Illegitimate birth)
Mère (mother) : MALERODE Marie
Agée (age of bride) : 27 ans / years old
Date de naissance (bride's birthdate) : 15 Fev 1825
Lieu de naissance (bride's birthplace) : VERDETS
Domicilié (bride's residence) : VERDETS
Métier (bride's occupation) : -- (not recorded)

Témoins (witnesses) :
1. Jean-Pierre Boylocq, 27 years old
2. Laurens Casaux, 48 years old, day laborer
3. Jean Cayala, 48 years old, carpenter
4. Jean Ypes, 44 years old, elementary school teacher

Neither the groom nor bride signed their names (probably illiterate), but all four witnesses signed with the mayor of Verdets.

I hope this is your record, but if it is not, no problem.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you !

Bien amicalement !

Salut !

There are many researchers following the Escaray name.

Your « d' » = « from » - that you have beginning your spelling (Descaray) is not recorded anywhere (at all) as a legitimate name variation, which I verified in several scholarly and popular indexes in France and online (no one had it), but the spelling Escaray is not unusual.

My Larousse Dictionnaire Étymologique des Noms de Famille states that the original spelling of your Escaray name is the somewhat popular « Escayrac », and a good variations of this include « D'Escayrac » and « Descayrac ». When I looked at message boards, I see many of the same researchers following all four of these spellings (Escayrac, Descayrac, d'Escayrac, and Escaray).

According to Larousse, the source Escayrac name (from which variations derive) HISTORICALLY originates in the département of Lot in France, in the town of Lescabanes where there is a topographic feature with this name.

I see most researchers on various Internet sites with ancestors of your chosen spelling variation « Escaray » originate in the towns of Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse (#1 by big percentage), Aren, Garris, Béhasque-Lapiste, Aussurucq, Ascain, Pagolle, Béhasque-Lapiste, Mendive, & Larceveau-Arros-Cibits (all in Pyrénées-Atlantiques); Pontonx-sur-l'Adour (Landes); and Labège (Haute-Garonne).

None of the researcher following the variation « Escaray » identified Lucq-de-Béarn as a place of origin for them, but this this does not mean that, perhaps, your ancestors married in this town.

The Escayrac / Escaray name also is popular in Navarra, Spain.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Your name Malerode is followed by VERY few researchers, but I found hundreds of extracted records for this name.

According to Larousse, this name HISTORICALLY also originates in the département of Lot in France. Its meaning is « bad two-wheel cart » or « bad cart maker ».

Most record extractions for the name « Malerode » are from the towns of Monein, Oloron-Sainte-Marie, & Saucède (#1, #2, & #3 by a large percentage), **Lucq-de-Bearn**, Verdets, **Estialesque**, Ance, Lasseube, Cardesse, Abos, & Préchacq-Navarrenx (all in Pyrénées-Atlantiques); and, Haux (Gironde).

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Your « Crouseille » is also followed by many researchers, with literally thousands of record extractions for it as well.

This name is especially common in the Massif-Central of France. The HISTORICAL spelling is « Crouzevialle », and it means « from a city in the Creuse region » .

I will not begin to list places, however Monein (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) is by very large percentage where people with this named lived. (Apparently, these people from Creuse moved south! - smile.)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

There are many websites to look at, that I will not bore you with, but of course, GeneaNet as well as Généalogie.com (which has record extractions from French genealogy societies) have the most.

You can find the original parish records and civil registrations online (for free) at the most of the sites of the départemental archives in France. Since it appears that most of your ancestors are from the département of Pyrénées-Atlantique, here is the link to search for the original records you may be seeking:

http://www.archives.cg64.fr/pageseditos.asp?idpage=1249&...

I am certain if you use the spelling « Escaray » I have identified with other informations you already have that you will have much success !

Bonnes recherches !

Angela, Thank you so much! It's been a lot of work finding my husband's family as Marie died soon after the birth of my husband's grandfather and their arrival in the US. Their son Andrew was placed with a family who adopted him and we knew him by his American name Marvin CONGER.

Our names in Aquitaine include not only Jean LASERRE & Jeanne DUMESTRE (once again I have no birth info for either), but his parents we believe to be Joseph LASSERRE & Marie REMAZEILLES (no info) and her parents, believed to be Jean DUMESTE & Jeanne SOURDOIS (no info).

On the paternal line we have the parents of Francois Garaig as Jean GARAIG-LABACHOTTE b.5 Jan 1831, Sarrance & Marguerite LABARERE-DEBAIX b.1836 d. 11 Nov 1859 in Sarrance, they were married 13 Dec 1854. I have names going farther back on theses lines that include NERET and HOURNOU. If you have any info about these families I would be delighted to have your assistance.

Once again, thank you so much for your help with the birthdate.
Regards, Janis

No, I have no connection with this family - I just enjoy helping people withFrench genealogy. I had a look in the indexes for Perquie - Jean LASERRE and Jeanne DUMESTRE were married on 9 Feb 1858. a Marie LASERRE was born 24 Sept 1861. The records themselves are not on line.
Angela

Thank you, Amandine. It certainly seems to be a place name and I did not know about Port de Pascau. Excellent map, as well.

Difficult to say with just an extract. It's a town name, perhaps Port de Pascau, nearby St Léger, but no guarantee.

Here's the Cassini map from late 1700's to get an idea of the villages and place names around St Léger: http://www.gencom.org/France/Cassini.aspx?CARTE=72&LOCAL...

Regards,
Amandine

At the time that I posted the begining of this thread I did post all the information I had, it's a long story. Over the years I have added a lot of info. Francois GARIAG (b 9 Jan 1858, La Maison Penacq, Sarrance, Basses Pyrenees, France) married Marie LASSERRE on 11 Feb 1884, in Perquie, Landes, Aquitaine, FRANCE. I have a copy of the marriage certificate and French military documents to support his birthdate and place, as well as his obituary. I do not have Marie's birthdate but according to the marriage certificate she was the daughter of Jean LASSERRE & Jeanne DUMESTE. Perhaps they were from Perquie, where the couple was married. They appear on a passenger ship list arriving inNew Orleans, Louisiana on 2 Apr 1890. If you have a connection to this family, I would love to share info.

The attached image is an occupation note I found in an 1836 census listing from St. Leger, Lot-et-Garonne. I can read "proprietaire a" but can not make out the rest of it. Perhaps someone on this list can help.

Merci,
Morris

I think you need to give more information, especially dates. When were they born? Did they marry in France? When did they leave?

Could Francois's wife have been a Lasalle or Lassalle?
My great-grandfather Etienne Blaye, first cousin to Francois Garaig, and his wife Marianne LaSalle were both from Lourdios Ichere, which is only a few miles from Sarrance. Etienne's mother was Grace Labarrera was from Sarrance, so there was a lot of communication between the villages.

Teresa

one more thing, there is a branch of the family in Cuba, some have already migrated here, and another branch in Argentina. I don't know much about that one as I only just recently heard about them.
Monika,
David was quite prolific! he sailed to haiti with 2 of his sons. one stayed in haiti and the other went to Cuba. David himself then had like 10 other children. I only kept the family line directly to me on my tree. You can find the whole thing with every branch on this link - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~htiwgw/familles/sansaricq....
Good luck!
