Very excited to have found the Parish baptismal record for my 6th gr-grandmother, born Sundhouse, Alsace, France in 1737.

On the record it states her name as Catherine Amannin, but it's really Amann. I noticed another surname that I have in my family also had an 'in' added to the end. That one was Lauffenbergerin.

Anyone know why they added 'in' to the back of the surname?

Hi Sandra. I have found this resource to be invaluable:
http://etat-civil.bas-rhin.fr/adeloch/index.php

At the bottom, check the box to accept their conditions, and on the next page, check "la version graphique".

Now, go through the list of communes (you may have to go through each letter of the alphabet) and see if any of these places sound familiar. If so, great! If not, you have a lot of research to do. :)

Once you choose a commune to search, it helps to know around what year someone was born/married/died. All the way to the left you will see records for catholic, jewish and protestant churches. Moving to the right you will see dates with N (birth) M (marriage) and D (death). For marriages, look on page 2 or 3 ... they are usually listed there. For births and deaths, go to the last page and look up the last name alphabetically. If you find the name you are looking for, there will be a number after it, that indicates what "number" they were ... the 6th birth of the year? Or the 8th death? This will help you find, in that "book", the record. I have used this to find several family members. My experience has been that there are usually no more than 20 or 30 births/deaths and no more than 5 or 6 marriages per year.

Good luck!
Thanks for the interesting info: & your time. Have added the marriage certificate to Mary Jane Nangle.
Will try & find her Father, as said previously she could be the Daughter of James Nangle but still confused. Will try & get it sorted. My husband has Alzheimers so not on Ancestry as often as I would like & I could have made mistakes. I really appreciate your help,

Regards, Elaine

Your original post only asked about McBride's so I'm a little confused with the Nangle's. But I'm happy to help with the search.

Have you got a copy of Mary Jane Nangle's marriage certificate online? If not would you please write out all the information contained on it. Thanks.

James McBride and some of the family were bass dressers (usually in the brushmaker industry). They were considered artisan workers. Manchester was known for it's brush factories. There were a number of brush factories in and near Charleville. Sometimes English workers went to France for a while for more work and/or better wages. Sometimes they were even recruited. Being in that business it isn't surprising that the family moved around a lot.

The 1911 census does not say Gustave Emile is a French resident. Under column 14 BIRTHPLACE it says:

"If born in a Foreign Country write the name of the Country"
and
"In case of persons born elsewhere than in England or Wales state whether "Resident" or "Visitor" in this country"

So for Gustave it's saying he was born in France and was a resident of England. It also shows that he is a British Subject by Parentage.

Think it was Charleville but can't remember where I saw it
I get fed up at times as I don't seem to be getting anywhere in some of my Trees.

Have had Mary Jane Nangles marriage cert for ages, assumed she was my great aunt, sister of my grandma Sarah Nangle, daughter of the mysterious Thomas Joseph Nangle.Taking another look at the certificate THIS Mary Jane is the daughter of James Nangle. If you have the time would appreciate you having a look. She could be the daughter of James b.1880 brother of TJ Nangle. On the 1911 Census Gustave Emile was listed as a french resident. Not ure what Gustave's job entailed but most of his children seem to be born in different places. I ass/u/med that james McBride had married a french woman.

my grandfather born in Roderen - on his birth records he was listed as Joseph Eugene - his name was eugene. I asked him about this over 20 years ago and he said that all the records were like that. His father in law's name was Joseph (Sepl is the nick name in the bas rhin area and sepi in the haut rhin area for Joseph) but on his birth record it is listed as Franz(his family wanted Francois) Joseph. He lived well into his late 90's and he told my grandfather that it had always been that way. (on his birth record he was listed as Franz Joseph). Same with the rest of the family.

hevanveen@casema.nl
Thanks for the ideas, and spotting the error (in the year) I made long time ago when I wrote the original post :) Well I fixed that. I had contacted the town clerk back around early 2000 or so and I was given his exact birthdate, and just the region of Alsace Lorraine, Germany. They said his mother was listed as Martha, which may have been an error because his surviving daughter was M. Martha (minus a maiden name), I believe they had that mixed up. They did not have a father's name. As for my GGM they only gave me the day she died.

He was the son of Martinus Edel and Anna Catherina ???. The Alsace records online for that commune don't go that far. Would you have other records to check that for me?
Thank you,
Rosemary C. Davies

I'm not related, but if you're trying to find Charles' parents and birth place I suggest getting his death certificate (which was in 1959 rather than 1859). In New York State I understand it is best to get it from the town or city clerk where he died. It should list his parents and if you're lucky the town he was born in. The same may be true of his obituary which might also list surviving siblings.

Charles was naturalized in 1898 in New York County. His naturalization papers might also have this info.

Barbara married Ludwig Wachterhauser, whom was from Switzerland. They married 1829 in the USA. Barbara birth date is Sept 02 1799 (her headstone says Alsace France). No birth dates for brothers. In 1833 they are boarding in Utica NY with a Jacob Breitstein Jacob, Francis and Nicholas are all listed as shoemakers.

Hello,

First, there is no Charleville in Alsace or any town in Alsace with a similar sounding name. There is a Charleville in Ardennes. I checked it and the surrounding towns but found no records for McBride or variations of the name. Which are you more sure of, Charleville or Alsace?

I looked through the UK consular/oversees birth but didn't find Gustave. However, those records are not complete.

According to the 1891 and 1901 censuses, Gustave's mother's name was Mary and she was born in Lancashire. There is one problem on those censuses though. James, the dad, would have only been 12 when the eldest child, James was born. There is a 10-year discrepancy for mother Mary's age on the two censuses. On the 1891 she would have been 7 when James was born and on the 1901 census she would have been 17 (so that's probably more likely the right date.) Could be that she was previously married and had James and William by that marriage.

I found a birth record for an Amelia McBride born in Sheffield in 1877. It might be an idea to write away for a long-form copy of it as it should have Mary's maiden name on it.

1891 census:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...

1901 census:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1901&in...

Amelia McBride birth:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=0&indiv=tr...

Thanks; I get confused with these boards here, as far as where replies are and such. There was something about being part of a family name, said post being deleted, but either way, it's fascinating to find out information like this.

I was going to ask how far back information was and also if you have any information on when they came to the United States and how (what boat, etc.); most records seem to say the children were born in Ohio but some say France - however, that confusion happens in other places, too, where people have had to guess.

Johann Schwarz b. 1829 in Eilingen

I am trying to find the birthplace of my 2g-grandfather, Johann Schwarz (later "John Schwartz") whose headstone in Louisiana indicates that he was "A native of Eilingen, Prussia", born April 13, 1829.

I have been unable to find a place name with that spelling, but I did come across a query from someone looking for "Eilingen Riedisheim Germany". After arriving to America, Johann married a woman from Niederhausen, Baden, about 60km (35 mi) north of Riedisheim, Alsace (across the Rhine).

Johann arrived in America in about 1854 and lived in southern Louisiana (in St. Mary Parish and in New Orleans), where he married newly arrived Franziska Förstl (sometimes spelled "Foerstel" among many other misspellings), of Niederhausen (baptized Catholic). Johann and Franziska had two sons born in New Orleans, Joseph Schwartz and John Nicholas Schwartz. I believe that Franziska had cousins in Alsace and Franziska had a cousin of Johann's age from Niederhausen, Valentin Ibert, who married Anna Maria Bliekast, b. 1823 in Alsace.

Johann might have been acquainted with Paul Zylicz, of Prussia, who was living with Johann's family in Louisiana at the time of the 1870 census, a few week's after Johann's death.

I have prepared this map, http://goo.gl/maps/MP78i, which lists plausible places and unlikely places with similar names (e.g. unlikely to have been considered a part of Prussia in 1829).

I have also referred to this map of the shifting boundaries of Prussia (http://bit.ly/10dkq4S), which suggests that Alsace is an unlikely place for my ancestor's birth in Prussia, but the other query of "Eilingen, Riedisheim" and Johann's in-laws across the Rhein suggest this possibility (and I have no leads in any other direction).

His was a very popular name at the time, providing many plausible possibilities, but I have found no record before 1859 (index of his naturalization) that is more than plausible.

Thanks.

I believe I read somewhere that these endings -in or -er are added according to whether the person is a male or female. Its kind of like in spanish where a gender can be assigned by adding an -a or an -o to indicate belonging to a masculine or feminine noun, such as "casa" which is feminine, so to say white house, you would say, "blanca casa" not blanco casa. Maybe someone else can tell you which gender is assigned to in and er for your surnames. I hope this helped a little.
Shana

Hi

This is Ruth Ann and I was at the LDS Church Family History research room last night. There were two very experienced folks there that also helped me in looking for info on Eugene Noel. I took the information you gave me, birth date etc and not one of the three of us could find Eugene's birthplace. I went to a web site that had local newspaper stories, obits etc and noting came up for Eugene. I did find that Cincinnati is in Hamilton County and was established in 1790 and that Columbus is in Franklin County and was established in 1803. I checked the Catalog on the Family Search.org site and found nothing that you didn't already have. There is a rootsweb.com site that you might want to check and was suggested to me. I'm sorry that I couldn't help you.Good luck with your search.

Ruth Ann

Hi RMB,

With a quick look I was able to find 18 births and two marriages for Kneofpli's in Hilsenheim between 1823 and 1842. If you give me the first names (and if you know their birth dates, even just years, and any other information) of your Kneopfli's who came to America I can figure out which may be part of your family.

Cheers,

Soosi

Hello,

The family that I'm researching are the Edels. Recently, through records online I think I found a Martinus Edel who was the son of Joannes Edel and Catherina Kneopfli who lived in Hilsenheim. Martin Edel is the father of John Edel, who is my husbands great-great-grandfather. Various spellings of surname here in the United States. Through "luck"
I was able to pinpoint where the Edels were from. All that I knew was that they were from Alsace. Can you imagine going through how many village to find them??? Do you know any Edel's in Hilsenheim? Would like to hear from you.

Thank you,
Rosemary C. Davies

Re: GOETZ - GATES Alsace Lorraine - Philadelphia - Toronto

Hi sorry i haven't checked in for a while, according to my mother, Philip, born 1861, met his wife in Philadelphia and had a son, Charles born 1895 back in Toronto. His wife apparently worked for a wealthy family, not sure what Philip was doing there, if he was there, there was also some connection to a brewery.
Perhaps your gggrandmother was a relative and he was down visiting. The marriage didn't last long as she being from Belfast(P) and Philip being catholic, well thats another story.
However, while visiting my mother for easter, i went thru some old photos, and found a picture of four men sitting on a front step of a house. My mother was told it waw philip but didn't know who the others were, as no names were listed on the back.
I'm pretty sure its Philip, John, Charles and the father Michael.
My guess, based on the age of the people in the photo and the timeline, is around 1886-1890, they probably all came back for the mothers funeral or Micheal's second wedding.

After spending so much time looking at the names, was nice to see their faces.

Phil

I suggest posting what you know about him including when he was born, when and where he died, to whom he was married and even children's names can sometimes help. Do you know when and where he immigrated? The more you post the easier it is to help you.

His obituary might mention the town where he was born and to a lesser degree his death certificate might also list it. If he had any siblings who also immigrated their obits and death certificates might list the town. Occasionally marriage records will list the town they were born in. In other words sometimes the best way to find out where someone was born is by looking at records of them long after they were born.
