I completely understand your elation. I also searched for a few years for family in Alsace, now I know enough to read the records. I also found a 3rd great grandmother in Calvados, France who 's surname has been 100% wrong since she entered the US.
For research across the ocean, one of the best places I have found is Geneanet (hopefully I'm not breaking any golden rules with Ancestry here). It is a family tree site catered more to European countries. There is an Alsace genealogical society with translated records there (as well as several other European societies). I have even met a few overseas cousins who have assisted me with confirming records and relations.
