Does anyone know which would be the nearest orphanage(s) to the town of Woumen? Do you know how to find Flemish orphan records for 1835-1855? I am specifically interested in discovering whether Rosalia DeKemel (b. 1835), daughter of Louis Joseph DeKemel and Francisca Victoria VanStechelman, resided in an orphanage, as family lore claims. Thanks.

Hi Bruce
I am curious about your VandeKerckhove relatives. My grandfather Edmond Vandekerckhove born 3 May 1885 in Ruddervoorde, had a sister named Emilie born 7 Oct 1882 in Ruddervoorde. I think her married name was DeGraeve though.
Don't know if there is any connection. Their parents were Andreas VandeKerckhove and Julia DeBlauwe.
Barb

Re: Looking for Van Haverbeke and Callewaert Ancestors

Hello,
I ran Cyril Van Haverbeke born on Feb 6th 1883 in Ruiselede through my records and the information below came up. The records I have are population records from Meulebeke Belgium. It shows Cyril was illegitimate so Camille was most likely his adopted father. Cyril's Mother was NEIRINCK MARIA VIRGINIA born in Aarsele 24 jul 1858 died in Meulebeke 4 oct 1890. Her parents were Michael Neirinck and Rosalia Vanderhaeghen . The rest are Cyril's brothers and sisters. The records show Camille married Maria Virginia's sister after Maria died. I hope this helps. Any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Best Wishes,

Jim Clark jimpclark@hotmail.com

VANHAVERBEKE CAMILLE

fs Eduardus en Theresia Glaude

°Meulebeke 22 jul 1860

xMeulebeke 17 sep 1884

23 sep 1884 kerk

2e huwelijk met JULIE NEIRINCK

3e huwelijk met ELISA DEWAELE

+Meulebeke 10 apr 1923

beroep: koopman (1885/1888)

fruitkoopman (1884/1890/1891/1897)

woonst: sectie Borgt nr 33 (1885/1888/1890)

sectie Borgt nr 37 (1891/1893)

sectie Borgt H32 nr 33bis (1897)

NEIRINCK MARIA VIRGINIA

fa Michael en Rosalia Vanderhaeghen (landwerkers te Ruysselede 1884)

°Aarsele 24 jul 1858

+Meulebeke 4 oct 1890 32j uxor ovl om 17:05u

beroep: dienstmeid te Meulebeke (1884)

winkelierster (1885/1890)

huishoudster (1888)

KINDEREN:

NEIRYNCK CYRIEL ° 6 feb 1883 in Ruisselede illegitiem

VANHAVERBEKE LEO JOSEPHUS °18 mar 1885

=19 mar 1885

+18 jun 1885 3 maand

VANHAVERBEKE JULIUS RENILDUS ° 1 jun 1886

= 1 jun 1886

VANHAVERBEKE IRMA CELINA °28 aug 1887

=29 aug 1887

VANHAVERBEKE ZULMA ELVIRA MARIA ° 7 nov 1888

= 7 nov 1888

+28 nov 1888 21 dagen

VANHAVERBEKE MARIA CELINA ° 2 nov 1889

= 3 nov 1889

x12 feb 1923

met GEORGIUS VANDENBROECKE

VANHAVERBEKE DOCHTER °+4 oct 1890 in partu om 17.00u

Hello
I was looking through the old post and saw yours. I ran the name Cyriel Maertens through my records and came up with this.
MAERTENS CYRIEL JOSEPHUS born 13 mar 1880 in Marialoop

married MARIA SCHIEKATTE

This Cyriel was one of 14 children. If you think this might be your ancestor I can trace back to his parents and grandparents. The only records I have are from Meulebeke.
jimpclark@hotmail.com
I am researching my great-grandparents-
Cyril Van Haverbeke born on Feb 6th 1883 in Ruiselede, West Vlaanderen, Belgium
Immigrated to the US possibly through Canada in 1907 but I can't find any record of it. He was in St. Ignatius, Montana during the 1920 and 1930 US census and died there in 1964.
He married Irma Lucia Callewaert on 11 Jan 1911 in Independence, Iowa
Irma Lucia Callewaert was born on Jan 16, 1886 in Bissighen, West Vlaanderen, Belgium
Immigrated to the US possibly through Canada in 1907 as well. I am unsure if they traveled together. She was in St. Ignatius, Montana during the 1920 and 1930 US census and died there in 1985.
They had 4 kids...Martha,Camiel,Bertha,and Paul all born in Montana.
Any help with this would be great.
I just started researching my husband's family from Zwevezele. They are: Daldini, De Duytsche, De Bruyne, Van Maele, Van Keirsbilck. I used www.vrijwilligersrab.be to find a great deal of information. I have many more questions, though.

Do you know how I could see the entry in the Census of 1814 for Zwevezele, Daldini, page 173, volume 30?

I would be happy to help you with anything you might still need in the US.

Thank you,
LSanders110

You can find him on Ancestry: Census of 1900, '10, '20, '30 in Detroit; Passport Application; WWI draft card. He was born in Aerseele, 15 Sep 1873, and his father was Ivo.

The website is www.vrijwilligersrab.be/
A group of volunteers in Belgium are transcribing the info for just West Flanders area of Belgium. It is a work in progress so not every town, year or type of info (birth, marriage, death) is on there. From the home page click on the British flag for the site to be in English. You can then get into civil and parochial records from there.
Hope you can find more info about your family
Barb
Hello Rita -
I will probably be going to the Center for Belgian Culture in Moline next week, so I will see if they have any information there that could be useful to you. I will take the information from your e-mail and see if anyone there knows the Robert Lievens family.
Thank you for the offer of help in Belgium. I have been in contact with members of my Flemish family in Ruddervoorde and gotten much information on the VandeKerckhove line. My grandfather was Edmond VandeKerckhove born in Ruddervoorde 3 May 1885. My grandmother was Maria VanNieuwenhuyze born in Waardamme 31 Jan 1886. They were married in Ruddervoorde 19 Apr 1909. Almost all of the VanNieuwenhuyze family including my widowed great grandmother came to the US or Canada.
I will try to find some more information for you next week, and will e-mail you directly if I find anything.
Barb

Hello Rita -
I searched on the Ellis Island website for your ancestor. I found this entry - I hope it is him
Camille Lievens age 25 and single arrived at Ellis Island on 24 April 1913 on board the SS Potsdam from Rotterdam, Holland. He was born in Uitkerke, Belgium and his mother's name was Mathilda Lievens. The ships manifest has his final destination as St. Boniface, Manitoba, Canada and he was going to a friend who lived there named Alfons Kroms.
I know many Flemish men went there about that time. My own grandfather and 3 great uncles went from Ruddervoorde, Belgium to St. Boniface in 1911. They all eventually ended up in the United States (Michigan).
I live in the Quad Cities area (Rock Island, Moline, East Moline, Illinois and Bettendorf, Davenport, Iowa). I have looked in the the local phone book and there are over a dozen people listed with the last name Lievens. If you send me your e-mail address, I could scan that page of the phone book and send it to you.
There is also the Center for Belgian Culture in Moline, Illinois that may be able to help you. Their website is www.belgianmuseumquadcities.org
Also the Ellis Island website is www.ellisisland.org
Hope some of this helps you
Barb

on Ancestry, going through the passengers records, the "list" of passengers with Julia had a column for who paid for the passage and the relation to the passenger, for her the answer was "Leon Puype", father.
By the way, the census' indexers really mess up "Velghe", and even put down Grandma's name as "Tomba" instead of Irma in the 1920 census. You should be able to get on my "Mathews Family Tree" and get to the historic records I attach.
Good to hear from you (and that you aren't bloswn away by "Ike"
Pat

My grandmother was Irma Puype, born Oct.3,1883 in Lichtervelde, Belgium. She married my grandfather, Henri Velghe, from Rumbeke, on Aug. 18, 1906. The immigrated to the US about 1910 and lived in the Kansas City area. Her sister Julia Puype, born in 1889, came over to join them in 1919. Their father's name was Leon Puype, and the family had dairy cows. My mother did not really know much else about her grandparents, she always assumed she had cousins in Belgium. Given the very few Puype names I've run across, we are probably related. Any information you may have will be greatly appreciated by me and my cousins.
My grandparents had 2 children, a boy and a girl, who died as infants before they came to the U.S. Do you or your cousin know of any way to find out more about them? All from that generation are gone now, and none of that information was passed on to any of my cousins. Our knowledge of the language is limited to a few phrases I am afraid, my grandparents were believers in speaking English in America.
Great Aunt Julia married Great Uncle "Brick" (I think it was Albrecht)Luft(not sure of spelling), also in the KC area, I don't think they had any children. Maurice and Martha Pieters were cousins of my Mother, but I'm not sure if they were from my Grandmother's or Grandfather's side of the family.
All but one Velghe name that we have found in the US belongs to one of my cousins or their children. Family reunions are fairly close-knit, too say the least. thanks for contacting me, I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I was just messing around on this website and I completely forgot I ever posted a message! Wow, if your grandfather and my great-grandfather are brothers my mom has a cousin she doesn't know! I never knew Remy had siblings. My grandmother(Remy's daughter) Elsa did go back to Belgium and visit her relatives before she died in the late 1980's. It was neat seeing videos of all the relatives in Belgium.
Kelly

Hello Barb
a great thanks for your help. The Camille Lievens from uitkerke isn't the one I'm searching for. He is from Sint Amandsberg - I found him on the Ellis Island files and my parents had some contact with him and his son before 1960.
We know that they had a son ROBERT born in 1912 in Belgium who came with them to East Moline in 1914. We also known that there is an other Robert F Lievens (problably son of Robert 1912) – he was born in 1932 and died on 1/119/1998 in East Moline – he was a pilot at the US Air Force. He was buried on Rock Island National Cemetry. We have a picture of him in the family album when he was young!!!

Maybe you know some people in New Moline who have contacts with relatives of Robert Lievens

We would be very grateful if you could help us.
my e-mail adres is rita.lievens@telenet.be
Of course we will help you too if you have questions of relatives in Belgium – Europe Ruddervoorde is not so far away and I often examine the national archives so please give me a full name of your Flemish - Belgian ancestor
Rita Lievens - rita.lievens@telenet.be
