My great grandfather was Bruno Vermander born 1860 in Passendale. He married Seraphine Menu in 1887 in Wingene. He emigrated with his family and his brother Isidore to St Boniface, Manitoba, Canada in 1889. Isidore Vermander later returned to Passendale. I would be interested in any information about their parents or relatives in Belgium.

Here is what I could find on the family from a West Flanders website
Bruno Vermander b. 8 Aug 1860 in Passendale married Seraphina Menu b. 27 June 1859 in Wingene on 27 Sept 1887 in Wingene.
Bruno's parents were Joannes Vermander (d. 26 May 1882 in Passendale) and Catharina Callewaert b. abt. 1822. Joannes and Catharina had several other children
1. Fredericus b. 30 May 1847
2. Isidore Aloisius b. 30 Jul 1850
3. Leonardus Amandus b. 23 Feb 1853; d. 25 Feb 1853
4. Marie Louise b. 12 Nov 1854; d. 26 Oct 1898
5. Leonardus b. 24 Feb 1857; d. 22 Jun 1858
6. Mathilde Maria b. 17 Nov 1858
7. Julianus b. 15 Jul 1866; d. 27 Mar 1868

Seraphina's parents were Felix Menu b. 9 Nov 1828 and Coleta VanWalleghem b. 4 Mar 1825. They were married 10 Oct 1856 in Wingene. Other children of Felix and Coleta
1. Karel Louis b. 2 Nov 1857
2. Felix b. 15 Nov 1861

Felix Menu's parents were Amand Menu b. abt 1799 and Barbara De Duijtsche b. abt. 1791.
Coleta VanWalleghem's parents were Ferdinandus VanWalleghem b. abt. 1790 and Francisca Scherrens.

Hope this helps
Barb

I had a chance to look a little further today and found more (earlier) info

Amand Menu was born 3 Nov 1799

Francisca Scherrens was born in 1792 and her parents were Joannes Scherrens and Anna Catharina Van Craeymeersch

Joannes Vermandere b 28 Jan 1817 in Staden married Catherine Rose Callewaert b 29 Sept 1822 in Passendale on 6 May 1845 in Passendale.
Joannes's parents were Eugenius Vermandere and Barbara Nollet. I found a marriage for Barbe Nollet b 1788 in Oekene to Ignace Vermandere b 1789 in Katchem on 3 Sept 1810 in Ardooie. Ignace could easily be a variation of Eugenius. Barbe's parents were Pierre Nollet and Celile Verhulst. Ignace's parents were Jean Vermandere and Claire Vervacke.
Catherine Rose's parents were Philippe Jacobus Callewaert b 26 Jul 1796 in Passendale and Amelia Celilia Blanckaert b 5 Nov 1799 in Passendale. They were married 15 May 1821 in Passendale. Philippe's parents were Hilarius Franciscus Callewaert and Anna Catharina Winne. Amelia's parents were Pieter Ignatius Blanckaert and Maria Anna Theresia Bouckaert.
Again I hope this helps

To Barb:
Thank you for all the data on the Vermander and Menu ancestors. I have added them to my family tree that I am creating on ancestry.ca. Is there any significance to the change of spelling from Vermandere to Vermander or would this be a normal evolution of the time?
Once again you have been most helpful and your efforts are much appreciated.

The change of spelling was most likely just a normal change over time. Among my ancestors the name changes sometimes even within the same generation. In my grandmother's family her siblings have the last name spelled 3 different ways in the records I have researched. Many of the people at this time were famers and did not have an education. Some could sign their name, but many had to rely on the government offical writing out the document or, on earlier records, the parish priest to spell their name. They would just sign with an "X" and have witnesses attest to their identity. When searching the records you sometimes have to become inventive on ways to spell the name.

The website I used was www.vrijwilligersrab.be/blog/index.php in case you would like to look at it. Click on the British flag on the home page to get to the site in English (however the actual records are still in Flemish) Records from 1790ish and later are under civil records, while earlier ones are under parochial records.
Good luck on your search

Barb,
The search for my ancestors has been quite successful with your help and the link to the Civil Records of West-Vlaanderen. I would now like to find the descendants of my g-grandfather's brothers Fredericus and Isidore. I have the following information on them:

Fredericus Vermander: b. 30 May 1847 in Passendale, d. before 1938
married 8 May 1878 in Passendale to
Marie Louise Parmentier: b. 17 Jan 1855 in Passendale, d. 1938 in Ardooie

Isidore Aloisius Vermander: b. 30 Jul 1850 in Passendale, d. ?
married 29 Apr 1885 in Passendale to
Juliana Leuridon: b. 22 Mar 1838 in Oostnieuwkerke, d. ?

As well I have found that Fredericus had a son Adelson Lucien Vermander: b.1886 in Hooglede, d. 1961 in Hooglede, who married Magdalena Lucia Maria Devriendt: b. 1889 in Gits, d. 1959 in Hooglede.

Do you have any suggestions as to where I could look for information on any other descendants as they would be the closest branches of the family tree in Belgium to my own family here in Canada?

Regards, Ron

Glad to hear that you have made so much progress on your research. As to trying to find descendants I don't have any easy suggestion. Seeing you know that Fredericus had a son who was born, married and died in Hooglede you might try googling Hooglede, Belgium and see if the city has a website. If it does there sometimes is someone you can contact with questions. From that contact person you could find out if they have a local genealogical society and a contact person there. They might be able to help you find and contact descendants. I know its kind of round about, but it might help.

Dear friend,

My grandfather was Adelson Vermander who lived in Hooglede, Belgium. He was a great classical music-lover who teached music at the conservatory in Roeselare and who gave many performances at the piano in Flanders. He had four children: Joseph, Antoon, Maria and Rob. My mother is Maria Vermander who is still alive, age 85. I was born in '55 and my grandfather died in '61. He was a well-known person in his village and abroad. He gave seminars on all the great classical componists and I inherited all his papers he used for his lectures.

With love,

Hi Jan,
It was great to see your response to my query. I had thought that I had reached a dead-end concerning the descendants of my g-g-grandfather. I am so happy to learn that I have a third cousin, and that I have some more names to add to my family tree.

It was interesting to learn about Adelson's accomplishments in music. I have some photos of my parents, Claude and Francoise, and of your grandparents taken during a visit to their home in Hooglede in September 1954. I recall my father saying that Adelson taught music but no other details. I do not think they were in contact after that.

I would like to know more about your uncles and your mother (date and place of birth, name of spouse, etc) so I can add them to my family tree. If you would like to share more information about our family tree, perhaps contact by email would be easier and more private. My email address is grv@magma.ca and if you are interested I can email you the link so you can see the family tree that I have been working on. Once again, thank you for your reply.

Regards,
Ron Vermander

Beste Jan,
Anne Provoost
