I have either a great or great-great grandmother from belgium with the last name "Angles". I think it is most likely from Wallonia, but I am not sure. I do not know where in Belgium this ancestor is from unfortunately because that would help me a out a lot. If someone knows anything pretaining to this, please give me your feedback.

Thank You,

Bobby

Hi Bobby,
I'm not sure why I got a copy of your message...My paternal grandfather's last name was Lacrosse, not Angles. He was from Belgium and like you I don't know where...he was dead before I was born and my dad died before I was old enough to think of asking. Now my dad's name was Angelo...maybe that is why I got your message. I wish you lots of luck in your search for your grandfather.

Hi,

I'm not sure but the surname you are looking for could be ENGELS or INGELS, but also ENGHELS and INGHELS.

Anyhow, you could look at
www.familienaam.be if the surname variant did exist around 1997 in Belgium (with a map of the distribution on the municipal level).

25 persons with the surname ANGEL did reside in Belgium around 1997.

Hi Donna,

Looking at www.familienaam.be I did see that the LACROSSE surname is mainly concentrated around LIEGE.

I would suggest that you post the Belgian data you know about your relative (birth date, emigration year, ...) on the following sites:

- the LIEGE and the EMIGRATION board of Belgium boards on the Ancestry/Rootsweb message boards.

- the LIEGE list at Yahoo

And, if you do have a GEDCOM file, upload at least a partial GEDCOM with your Lacrosse's, at ROOTSWEB and at GENEANET.

See:

For the Belgium boards at Rootsweb/Ancestry:
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=l...

For the Belgian Yahoo groups:
http://users.skynet.be/sky60754/nf/Subscribe.htm
(you can post in English)

For Worldconnect at Rootsweb/Ancestry
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/

For GeneaNet:
http://www.geneanet.org/

This all will probably not help in the short run, but you could be surprised in the long run if you have patience.

Greetings,

Luc Matthijs

Hi Luc,
Thank you so much for the info and web sites. I know his birth year from his headstone but the year he emigrated I only have hearsay. Anyway thanks again...at least I have some place to start in Belgium.

Yeah, it very well could have been spelt wrong. It seems to be someone was just listening to the names and places and not really paying attention to how it was really spelt. I know one of my great aunt's made it, but Freiburg in Germany is incorrect also.

well sir,

I am an Inghels, here in the USA myself. My grandparents came over from Belgium shortly after WW2 dragging my dad and his sister with them. There are still a bunch of Inghels, and Engels, and Angles in the family tree. Sorry if no longer searching for an answer. I just recently came upon your search and created an account to say hello.
