This name wrote before the seventeen century Baslon ( now : Bâlon ) the S was replaced by a hat on A. Indeed it hasn't nothing to do with a ball .. it only means in french : Long sock ! ( bas long ) the g had forgotten.

There are Balon names in my family, married into the Martiny family from Vlessart and Heinstert. I was recently in this area and saw gravestones with this name in the cemetery in Vlessart.
