I have been researching my Limburg ancestors who arrived in Carver County, Minnesota in 1863. They came from Rotem, Limburg, Belgium and settled in Watertown Township, Carver County and others went to Ramsey County (St. Paul). The family names in Flemish were Snijckers, Cox. They also came with Limburgers from Susteren, Holland who were Vergoosen and Beckers. The Snijckers name spelling was changed variously to Snicker, Sniker, Snyker. All the families were Catholic and descendants married into German and Irish Catholic families. I was in Belgium in 1995, but didn't know the family origins at the time. I have found these families in the records at the Family History Library in SLC. I have visited the Carver County Historical Museum, etc. I am looking for information on Rotem, Limburg, Belgium and the Catholic church they might have worshiped in before coming to Minnesota. What luck have you had in finding out about the local history of the towns where your ancestors came from in Limburg, Belgium?

Hello,

I live in England and am desperately looking for more information on my paternal grandparents, unforutnately no-one in my family seems to have information as to where I could find the birth date of Joannes (Jan) Tempels and his wife Pauline Landerloos. My father died in 1983 and my mother doesn't know at all, there are no other Tempels relatives alive who can assist.

I believe that Jan was born in Paal (not sure it could have been Koersel) and died early 1960's (again not sure where but it could have been in Tienen where he lived with his second wife), I have no information on Pauline at all, she died when I was very young (possibly around 1955).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

My great Grandfather, Sylvester William Hendricks came from Tongerlo, Bree, Limburg, Belgium to the USA about 1862. He lived in Minnesota, first in Carver county, later in Scott, McLeod and Douglas Counties. Several of his neighbors were also from Limburg Province Belgium originally. Some surnames were Kramer, Braun, Clausman?, Bongarts. I would like to hear from other decendants of the Limburg Belgiums who immigrated to Minnesota.

I am searching for information on the Engelen name. Is there any way you could help me. The original Joannes (Johane or John) was born in the kingdom of Belgium on 6 April 1837. He was in Missouri, USA, in 1868. In the census here for where he came from, it states: Bel, Deu. I don't know if that means Deurhn, or where. He was born approx. 1837. His parents names were Joannes Baptist Engelen & Maria Barbara Gevers. Any information would be great.
Thanks so much!

Thank you. That is so nice of you. I've gotten throuhg most of it, though the handwriting is so old and curvy. The word "Talleres" comes up. I looked it up and it measn factories, which if it is correct might suggest they worked in factories? I dont know. The whole sentence reads, "Domiciliado(a) en Talleres" also another sentence I'm having trouble with is "Bendecido por infracrito" and i'm not sure if the spelling of that last word is right or not.
Thanks for your help. No rush!

Just post the Spanish here, and I will then post the translation in English, or e-mail me at erinandharvey@yahoo.com with any translation requests.

There is probably no mistake.

From 01/10/1795 on France did incorporate what's now Belgium until 1814.

Around 1798 it was forbidden to baptise children. So people did _sometimes_ register their children when they where born and asked a undercover priest to baptise their child when it was possible.

This period is also famous for the armed resistance against the occupant in these regions (the 'Boerenkrijg' = Peasants war).

It was also usual to try to forget to resgiter sons, so that they couldn't be drafted in the army when they were 19 years old.

See:
http://www.mavicanet.ru/directory/eng/34364.html
http://www.rootsweb.com/~belghist/Flanders/Pages/religion.ht...

Greetings,

Luc Matthijs

Marg,

Sorry, I tought that you meant the baptism/civil register difference (july/october)

"My point being: Joanenes birthdate 16 Jul, 1798
Jan birthdate 10 Jul, 1798"

Joannes or Johannes (Latin), Jan (Dutch), Jean (French) and John are the same first names.

I think that Jan (first name really used by himand his family), born 10/07/1798, was registered as Joannes in the civil registers on 16/07/1798 and baptised as Joannes in october of the same year.

Reread the civil registration and you will probably find that the document was written the 16th (mentioned somewhere at the beginning van the document) and that he was born the 10th (mentioned in the middel of the document).

Example: http://belgium.rootsweb.com/src/bel/cr/cr_birth_1804_f01.htm...

Jean/Joannes should be used in official documents until 1815 and possible again from 1830 on.

Jan/Joannes is normally used in 1815-1830 and could be used from 1830 on.

Greetings,

Luc
Hello,

As you can see, my name is Kurt Walmagh and as it happens i am also searching for my ancestors. It's correct that the name Walmagh is originally from the Haeren-Vechmaal area. I already reached the 17-th century (Pierre Walmac born in vechmaal in 1650). My direct ancestors are also Lambert Walmach and Anna Cox, married in 1824, owners of the mill of Haeren.

If you are interested to learn more about it, you can contact me at this E-mail : itabel.bvba@pandora.be

Best regards

Kurt Walmagh

Joannis Verjans and Agnetis Noben had 6 or 7 children who were christened in Hoeselt, Limburg, Blegium. I have a conflict with a child listed as Joannes Verjans christened 28 Sep 1798 in Hoeselt, Limburg, Belgium. His birth date is listed as 16 Jul 1798. My Great Great Grandfather was Jan Verjans, same parents, birth date listed as 10, Jul 1798. Does anyone know where I could contact for church records? I wondered if the two could be the same with a change in names and a mistake in birthdate, but I would just be guessing. Thank you for any help you can offer. The other option would be that Jan and Joanenes are the same person, but how can I find out birth name and which date is correct?

Thank you so much, Luc. That makes since to me. Jan is the name the family had. The 10th is the date the family had. Janenes and the 16th was information that someone took from church records. Your interpataion sounds correct. Thank you for taking the time to help brain storm this and for posting. You are a super nice person to do so.
Marg

Theo, I would be interested in getting a copy of the information you are speaking of. Are you sure it is my Verjans family? Is Verjans a Dutch name or French?

Looking for family of Charles Kremer who lived in the Detroit area. He was born in Sept. 1888.His parents were Frank and Louisa Kremer/Kramer.They were born in Germany. Charles may have been born there too. His siblings were Hoyt, Elizabeth(my bio0grandmother) Leona, Lena, Annie and Francis. Think they lived in Springwells in the early days. Frank was a farmer. Hope to find family-offspring.Susan Patterson(TX.)
