I have been in a similar situation with these documents. They are written in old German....it was used up until the WW II---any native German speaker over the age of about 65 or 70 could read this....

I used to have a key to decipher the letter combinations...cannot find it. Will look some more.

BACH in Langenfeld, Belgium?

Can anyone verify for me that a Langenfeld existed in the 1800s near Malmedy? BACH family members have indicated to me that is the birthplace of Nicolas BACH, 1820, Langenfeld, near Malmedy, Belgium (a few miles from it).
Thanks for any comments or directions as to where to verify this. I guess one can order the civil records for Malmedy to be absolutely sure, but at least I would like to know the town existed. Is it now called Longfaye? Or was Longfaye known in the Prussian era by another name?

The RIR77 was part of the 2. Garde-Infanterie-Division. (The same division that Erich Maria Remarque briefly served in (with RIR15) during June/July 1917.)

Perhaps is this a new help for you: These villages of the "Eifel area" are processed by the "WGfF, group Trier" ("Westdeutsche Gesellschaft für Familienkunde", Gruppe Trier) in Germany. I am not aware of any central database. I have done all my research using records from specifically Eupen. There are a number of towns (mostly smaller) in the East belgium (german speaking) area. If you can post more specifically, I may be able to look it up when I get access to the records at the FHC again.

I was always told by my mother that my great great grandfather was from Alsace-Lorraine. But, I just printed the 1920 US Census and his son states that "his father was born in Belgian-occupied Germany". I don't know in which area but I would like to find out if there is a central archive where documents could be checked and ordered. The Netherlands has a great, free website genlias.nl

Birth Record written in German, Can someone translate?

I am trying to find someone who could translate a 1915 birth record from German to English. It is an official document where there are spaces that have been filled in with a script type handwriting. I have no idea what it says except for the year is obvious. Otherwise I am lost. Is there someone who could assist me in this? I have scanned the record and could send it to someone as an e-mail attachment if they were willing to take a look at it. Thank You!

Can anyone verify if Longfaye was in the 1800s called Langenfeld? A BACH was born, from family tradition, at Langenfeld near Malmedy.

I do think (but it's only a guess) that he lived in the North of Alsace-Lorraine, near the Belgian town ARLON and not in Belgium.

And that he emigrated through the Belgian port of Antwerp. The railroad communication from that region to Antwerp was far better than with Le Havre.

I did find for GROSSLANGENFELD on Wikipedia the following:

"Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung erfolgte 1283 als Langievield".

So the variant of the place name as Langenfeld was correct.

The german/diets/letzeburgs/dutch speaking area between Maastricht (NL) - Malmedy (BE) - Luxemburg (LUX) - Kronenburg/Scheleiden (D) did undergo turbulent changes between 1795 and 1839.

That region is the transition area between German, Dutch and French.

Grosslangenfeld did belong to the bishop of Trier. His territory has been divided between Belgium, Germany and the Grand-Duchy in 1795 and 1839.

For these reasons this posting will remain on this board. It will help others to solve some classic problems for this area.

But I suggest that a link, from the appropriate Rheinland board, with the correct title, should be made with this posting.

Konni, I replied to you privately, but I thought I should update publicly the information I had put there back in 2005.
Since then I learned the answer to my question. The Langenfeld I wanted to find was not in Belgium but just a few miles across into Rheinland, Germany, and about 32 km. from Malmedy. The reason it was harder to find was because it was called Grosslangenfeld, not simply Langenfeld, located at 50° 13' N. 6° 15' E.
I mentioned finding the birth and baptism of one of the children in the Nicolas and Elisabeth (Lowen or Louen) Bach family, namely, Michel, b 20 Feb 1855 at Welchenhausen, just a km. or 2 from Belgium, and this is only about 10 km. SW of Grosslangenfeld.
The best find however (using Thomas Pick's wonderful website listing many Eifel region parishes) was finding the birth of Nicholas Bach's brother Bernard in 1832 at Grosslangenfeld to parents Nicolas Bach and Elisabeth Cremer, which confirms for me that I am investigating the right area where Nicolas should also have been born. I have studied Bernard Bach very much and am sure he is part of the same family as Nicolas, for he also emigrates to the same county (Stearns County, Minnesota) as does Nicolas born 12 Aug 1820, and gets married, has several children and died there in 1880.
I have tried various parishes around the Grosslangenfeld area but been unsuccessful in finding Nicolas Bach's birth, but I did also find on Thomas Pick's website 7 other siblings as well as the wedding of Nicolas Bach and Elisabeth Cremer in 1806 at Bleialf just a bit north of Grosslangenfeld.
Thanks to all who responded to my original query. The subject line should now be changed to "BACH in Grosslangenfeld, Rheinland" and no longer a matter of concern for this "German Speaking Community" message board.

Konni, thanks for pointing to the website. But maybe I did not make myself clear enough. I have those 8 names of the children of Nicolas Bach (1781) and Elisabeth Cremer (1788 from the Winterscheid website and Thomas Pick's), but there was at least one more, the one I know best from the U.S. side, Nicolas Bach, b 12 or 20 Aug 1820, born apparently somewhere else besides Grosslangenfeld (and Winterscheid). If you could help find that one, it would be greatly appreciated.

My father, Joseph Ross, was born in Wanda, Minnesota in 1917 and talked of our family coming from Manderfeld. His father was Peter Ross, with a Hubert and Henry coming before that. He wrote out a geneology that I have somewhere.

There is no address more of the old castle Pesch, because this castle was restored at the beginning of the eighties, and was divided up in 14 exclusive owner-occupied flats. So it has 14 owners now, and they live in the castle. The castle Pesch has nothing to do with the suburb Pesch at Cologne.

Translation:

In the year 1891 on october 12th at 9 o'clock in the morning, came to me, Dominiques Cloos, mayor of Koerich, Canton Capellen, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg,
Andreas Brücher - 37 years; worker of a farm; resident in Goeblingen.

He showed me a child of female gender and explained,
that his wife Catherine Seyler - 38 years - without profession; resident in Goeblingen -, has given birth of a child yesterday 11 o’clock in the morning in Goeblingen, and which shall have the name Catherine now.

This explanation was in the presence of the witnesses: Johann Klein - 37 years; teacher; and Michael Rieß - 33 years; landlord; both resident in Goeblingen.

I have read this document to the father and the witnesses. After that they have signed this document with me.

your "Bach Family" can be found complete in the person register of Winterscheid. Winterscheid is few kilometres north of Großlangenfeld.

Your question is already old a bit. But I had asked a Belgian. He gave me the following information about "Longfaye": The first syllable "Long" is how "long" in English. The second syllable "faye" cannot be translated in German or English. A "Langenfeld" in French would be called "Longchamps"! The second syllable "champs" is in French a field, land. Field is in the German language also a field, land. Therefore you thought of "Langenfeld"? However, in the East-Belgian area around Malmedy the people had spoken never German. Only "walloon"! There are 5 places with the name "Langenfeld" in Germany. In the "Eifel" is a place Langenfeld only nearby the city of "Mayen".

Alsace-Lorraine still belongs to a section/area that ia called Elsass-Lothringen. As far as I found out it was till 1789 independent. The french revolution 1789 took it over. From 1871 - 1918 belonged to the Germans. In the year your aunt was born it was german. But I think you have to search in the country where it belongs today. Today it belongs to France. There are quite a lot of links to Alsace-Lorraine in France.

I got some more informations about the Klingelhoetz since my last post.
The name was probaly KLINGELHOETS and they probably came from Belgian Limburg
I found some in a town called ELEN (but it's not mine)and they perhaps were coming from GENK and not Gent.
They moved from belgium to US around 1867. They settled in Carver Co MN in the 1870 Census (but then were called Klingroot. Now I got all the data I need after 1870.

THOMAS (1850)
CORNELIUS (1855)

JOSEPH (1860)

I looked on GENLIAS it was very helpfull to find Klingelhoets in Netherlands but I'm not fluant in dutch
so I'm stuck. I can not identify the ship they used neither

I personly use Google to find a "Translation" site so I could "translate" my German homework but tis it is Summer of 2007 and I'm stuck with working at the coolest place in in Texas that is family owned and operated in *New Brunfuls *(? ?Wonder if the name is spelled correctly? ?)but i have forgotten the name of the site but now I have found it www.google.com/language_tools?hl=EN.
