De Vos (Eduard, Petrus), DeMeyer (Stephanie). Trying to trace...

Surnames: De Vos, Devos, DeMeyer, Davis, Vos
I am looking for any information anyone may have on a Eduard De Vos and Stephanie (first name spelled different ways in different records) De Vos (née DeMeyer). Eduard was born around 1854 and Stephanie was born 13 Aug 1858. They arrived in New York (departing from Antwerp, Belgium) on 21 Apr 1880 with their oldest son Petrus, who was born 4 Jul 1878. They later lived in Ashtabula County, Ohio and went by Edward, Stephanie and Peter Davis.

I believe they spoke German, and were listed as being born in Germany in the 1910 US census. However, in the 1880 census (in which their last name was listed as 'Vos' - every census after this has the americanized 'Davis') and later censuses, plus Stephanie's death record, Belgium is listed as their place of birth, and my aunt remembers being told this side of the family was Belgian AND German. I have no more specific information about what region/town they came from or where they were born. I'd like to find more information and trace them out of the United States, but I'm not sure where to go from here.

Iam Clayton Davis , my grandfather was Peter (Petrus) Davis,my father was Bernard Davis. Iam also trying to gain more data on Edward Davis . The Johnston/Hatch Family Tree offers more details ,however, not much on any of the family from Belgium. I will be researching this summer as follows: 1) Speaking with Catholic Church in Bucyrus Ohio that has information on Edward. 2)Meeting with Stella Davis's daughter and Stella's brother William C Davis who is 90 but in good health. William's father is Charles Davis and granfather Edward. Do you have more information?

Hi Clayton! I'm not sure if I have any more information for you, as everything that is currently on the Johnston/Hatch tree (I am a third great granddaughter of Edward Davis, through his son Clarence) is all that I currently have. I was, however, able to find something of interest with the help of a Dutch friend who searched a Belgian site for me -- my grand uncle did some research back in the 90s/early 2000s and had Stephanie Davis (nee De Meyer) listed as being from 'Oastechoo', a town that doesn't exist in Belgium, and my Dutch friend believed it may have actually been an incorrect transcription of Oosteeklo. She found this information on the town's site (http://www.oosteeklo.com/index.php?m=historiek&f=migrati...) :

"De familie De Meyer - De Vos vertrok met vier personen naar Amerika.("The family De Meyer - De Vos left [with] four people to America."), which appears to have been around the same timeframe (1880s) as Edward, Stephanie, and Peter immigrated to the US, so I believe this is them, but have been unable to access Belgian records to confirm this, as well as figure out who the fourth person would have been. I'm sure there are church records in that town that may have a marriage record or birth/baptism record for Peter, if this is where they were from, but I have no way to visit Belgium and don't believe these records are currently online.

I would absolutely love to hear the information you find out this summer, as I think it may give us more insight into where Edward was from and more information about the family in general! Do you have an email address I could contact you at?

Thanks for your prompt reply concerning information on Edward Davis and family. I did not gain any information when I went to Belgium on Ancestry.com. I may call them again and see if they can help.
I did discover an interesting ships immigration list of 1900. The name Edward DeVos was on the list, age 46. The destination was Bucyrus, Ohio. If this was him, why did he go back to Belgium and return?
You probably heard the rumor that Edward was once a priest!
I have not been able to find anything on Stephanie DeMeyer or her parents.
My father said that someone(?) did trace the family back to Belgium but I did not record who it was. I will research this more.

My e-mail address is claydavis3208@yahoo.com. What is your e-mail address?
Fascinating, isn't it! Thanks Clay Davis
