Charles William Pearce Lane

CWP Lane is our poor old 'Black Sheep', having been born illegitimately 9 Feb 1894 at 1 Albert Terrace Ashley Street, St Martin’s birmingham to mother Rose Pearce, who soon after died of TB.

He was brought up by his 'father' Charles Lane. But charged and sent away for stealing at age 14 for 3 years in Monmouthshire, served in WW1, was a POW in Sennelager, and came back to UK to marry Fanny Wilson, having a number of children. He kept the Pearce part of his name throughout.

All his sisters denied he existed! But I feel he must have had a really hard life.
Family folklore says that he left for belgium and married bigamously, and we don't know if this is true or not.

He may be known as:
Charles Pearce
Charles Lane
Charles WIlliam Pearce
Charles William Lane
Charles WIlliam Pearce Lane

Or something similar to avoid detection.

His last know address is 8 lime Grove Birmingham in 1935 with wife, Fanny. (Electoral Roll)

I would dearly like to know if he has become part of a Belgian family tree somewhere?

emails can come to me direct: lorraineatlolpaynedotcodotuk

Thank you
Lorraine Payne

Please can anyone help me with information on John De Mulder. I have him registered on the UK 1911 Census living in Marylebone London and stating he was born in Belgium. His occupation is stated as Ladies Tailor. His wife is listed Rebecca, born in Marylebone London. Estimated marriage year stated as 1906. I cannot find a marriage for them in UK records and think maybe they were married in Belgium. They had a daughter Bertha Winifred de Mulder, born Paddington in 1910. Any information would be appreciated.

Seeking Advice

Hello,

I have a great grandmother whose family came to the US from Belgium around 1883-1884. I have not been able to find an immigration record. (I have this info from census and other US records only) On one US census record they stated that their mother tongue was Walloon. Most of the others say Flemmish. Other than their names and some of their birth dates, I have no idea where to begin a search in Belgium. Would anyone be able to offer some advice? Thanks so much!
Wolvert Family:

Joseph Wolvert (birth: abt 1841 Belgium)
wife Frances Freland (birth: abt 1838 Belgium)

Children:
Mary or Marie E Wolvert (b: abt 1868- Belgium)
Octavie Wolvert (b: 20 Nov 1874- possibly Brussels, Belgium)
Joseph Wolvert (b: abt 1880- Belgium)
Peter Joseph Wolvert (b: 03 Jun 1883- Belgium)

I pretty much have found them in all the US records on Ancestry. I just have no idea where in Belgium to begin searching. I can read French records, so if you do find time, any links that you could post would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Amy

Hi:

The only thing I found is the 1900 U.S. Federal Census in Ancestry.com. Only Joseph (58 yrs) and his wife, Frances (62 yrs) are mentioned. The name on the 1900 census is mentioned as Joseph Woldife (Joseph Wolvert).
Birth Date: Nov 1841 in Belgium (Bremen)?
NOTE: Bremen is in Germany. I don't think there is a Bremen in Belgium.
Home in 1900: Brainord Ward 1, Crow Wing, Minnesota
Immigration year: 1883
Marriage year: 1867
Parents' birthplace: Belgium

Couldn't find anything else or anywhere else.

If you understand French, I can give you some websites where you might be able to find or request help.

Cordially,

Lucie

Hi everyone.
Allthough I'm not going to the archives any time soon, I'm still offering to help.

I have a HUGE tip for anyone looking for ancestors in Belgium (particularly in the Flemish speaking part):
This website: http://arch.arch.be provides scans of A LOT of original birth, marriage and death certificates. This is a recent development. The organisation of the national archives has just put them online this January.
All you need to do is register yourself (FREE), so you can log in and search all the scans.

I use this website a lot and I find it to be very helpfull. Normally you should be able to choose English as your language.
If you still encounter problems, questions, ... Don't hesitate to ask!

Found marriage record - how to proceed?

I recently found the marriage record of an ancestor from Brussels via the digital archives. I also found the birth of his children (all of these records from the early 1700s, same parish). Unfortunately, the name of the ancestor above was not listed in the birth index for that parish. None of the records contain any information about the origin of the family, (and the marriage record does not list parents' names). Does this lack of information have any significance - i.e., if the person on the record were from outside Belgium would it necessarily be noted? I am not sure if I should check all of the parishes in Brussels, or just conclude that he was born outside Belgium altogether. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I believe the search pages are only in French and Dutch at the moment (I'm working with Chrome and Google Translate to help with the languages). And the interface seems a little clumsy at first for the scanned archive, but at the highest level you choose Parish or State records, then click the Province. From here the selections form a tree type navigation, and you select the Commune/Village, then the Deaths, Marriages, or Births. At this point you are presented with the Actes or Indexes, then blocks of Years. When you arrive at a particular roll of microfilm you are taken to a new page with tabs for a file description of the resource, and another tab for the Digitized Archive. Click the Digitaized Archive tab and you are presented with a few thumbnails. Click the first thumbnail and a browser opens to allow you to virtually turn pages through the book. Once you work with it for a while you begin to understand how the books are set up.

I suggest you begin with the 10 year indexes which are arranged alphabetically by surname which will point you to the number of the Acte in a particular year. Then go to the Actes of that year.
Hope this helps a little.
James

Hi

Do you have a copy of this death record, I can't find no Bagel at all and maybe it's just that the writing is not very clear or that the letters are written in a old writing style. You can e mail it at belgianroots AT gmail . com ( put it all together and replace the AT with the usual arobase sign)

We think they were orphans and they had lived in a big house with a housekeeper. My grandfather always said that his surname was not Joseph and that his father had put this down incorectly on documents and that Joseph was his christian name and that it should be Charles and that is why Charles has been passed down through the family.

Lecent/LeCent Surname

Hello,

My great grandmother's maiden name is Lecent/LeCent. She was born in Queens, New York in 1866 and her father was listed as being from Belgium in his naturalization records. I have been searching for that last name in Belgium for years but I can't find any present day people named Lecent/LeCent.

My feeling now is some how the spelling of the name was changed but I'm not sure what it would be. I have considered Leconte but am not sure of the pronunciation of the c (like a K or an S?) If it's pronounced like an S, I could see that the U.S. spelling would be phonetically similar. Any thoughts or ideas on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sarah:
I got your reply to my post regarding Louis VandeCavey, I have found more information that might help you find a more definitive answer regarding his parents. I have found his obituary, it states that he passed away on January 24, 1947 @ 73 years of age, it says that he has a brother and 2 sisters who lived in Belgium at the time he passed. It also says he was originally from, I hope I am spelling this correctly, it's a little blurry, I think it says Brugas. If you are able to find any info, please pass it along, I am very interested to learn about his family.

Hi!

I was wondering if you have proof he was from Antwerp. Because it's not because he departed from the port of Antwerp to the USA (I found the record as well on ellisisland.org), he was born there or he lived there. Belgium is a small country and it doesn't have that many ports. Especially where ships departed to cross the ocean.

It would be helpfull if you had any more information. Was his name spelled differently on other documents?

If his age on the documents I found is correct, he should have been born in about 1874, but if I don't have a location, it's going to be difficult in determining the right Louis Van de Cavey..

I have found one born in 6 Aug 1873 and the researcher doesn't have a date of death, which could mean the person would have emigrated. But then again I'm can't be sure this is the one you have been looking for..

This is the one I found:
http://gw2.geneanet.org/jdebrabandere11?lang=en;pz=tanguy+la...

If you have any other information, do tell me or contact me through sarah.lavigne@hotmail.be

Thank you!

Hi,

As this is less then 100 years old and in the Walloon area of Belgium, I think your best chances are contacting the civil registry service of the town Seraing. You can try to ask if hey search for you eather birth or marriage certificate.

The archives I go to are the Flemish ones so I would do the same thing as I recommend you for the Walloon registry.

Send an e-mail to population@seraing.be or a letter by postal mail to:

Mr Antonio Luca
Ancien Hôtel de Ville van Jemeppe
Quai des Carmes, 45
4101 Seraing (Jemeppe)
BELGIUM

Good luck!
