I am trying to find out anything on my husband's ancestor, John New. He was born 14 September 1838 or 1839. According to his obit, he was born in Belgium and came to the United States when a young man. He settled in Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa on the Mississippi River. He was in our Civil War, was a devout Catholic, and died in Clinton 5 July 1913. According to his enlistment papers, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, dark complexion, and hazel eyes. Any suggestions as to where to start looking? Thanks for your help. Sheila Smith

Evideently there were numerous John News. I cannot find his immigration papers or his naturalization papers but I have his civil war papers, death record, will, and picture of his stone. Plus a whole lot on his family. Our John, had four children, only one was married and had children, two died as children and one died at age 25. The daughter, Josephine married a John Michael Banker and had 11 children so you can imagine the size of the family now. How can we be sure we have the correct John? Sheila
