Not yet, but a gal in Belgium suggested the community of Holsbeek, which over here was spelled ousbeekee? I have this: PAST AND PRESENT

OF

ISABELLA COUNTY MICHIGAN

BY

HON. ISAAC A. FANCHER

ILLUSTRATED

B. F. BOWEN & COMPANY
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

1911

As the name suggests, the subject of this sketch is of foreign birth, his native land being the kingdom of Belgium, where he first saw the light of day on June 8, 1854. He spent his early life near his native town of Ousbeekee, in the schools of which he received a fair educational training and later began earning his livelihood as a tiller of the soil. Mr. Beltinck labored diligently on a farm, but owing to the small wages which unskilled labor in his country commanded he did not succeed in getting anything ahead, accordingly he decided to quit the land of his forefathers and try his fortune in the great American republic beyond the sea. With this object in view, he married, in 1875, rne young lady of his choice and the day following the ceremony took ship for his distant destination, being twenty-nine years of age at the time, and with but little means above the price of his and his wife's passage across the water.
Immediately after landing, Mr. Beltinck made his way to Frankfort, Michigan, near which place he spent the first years as a laborer for monthly wages, and at the expiration of that time became foreman in a lumber camp, which position he filled during the nine years ensuing. Severing his connection with his employer in 1893, he came to Isabella county and purchased eighty acres of woodland in Union township, going in debt for the same, as he was able to save little above his living from his wages as a lumberman. Addressing himself to the task of improving his land, he labored diligently during the following years and in due time had a goodly number of acres cleared and in cultivation, besides making various improvements in the way of buildings, fencing and ditching, which added greatly to the productiveness and value of the farm. Without following his career in detail, suffice it to state that in the course of time his land was cleared and otherwise improved and the last dollar of indebtedness paid, and in addition to his original purchase he has since bought an eighty-six acre tract near by which under his effective labors has also been brought to a successful state of tillage.
Mr. Beltinck paid for his first eighty acres the sum of one thousand six hundred and fifty dollars, but with improvements since made it is now worth over six thousand dollars, for every cent of which he is indebted to his own efforts and thrift. Among the improvements are a fine modern barn forty by fifty feet in dimensions, several outbuildings, which are substantial and in first-class repair. One thousand five hundred rods of eight-inch, one thousand rods of six-inch and four thousand rods of three-inch tiling, making in all six thousand five hundred rods of ditching, by means of which a number of acres of very fertile land have been reclaimed and the productiveness of the rest of the farm greatly enhanced. Financially, Mr. Beltinck has met with success commensurate with the labor and time which he has expended on his lands and he is now among the well-to-do farmers and substantial citizens Of his township and county, living in independent circumstances with sufficient
■ means' at'his command to insure a prosperous and comfortable future. In connection with tilting the soil he gives much attention to live stock, making a specialty df cattle of the Holsteiri breed, of "which superior aniinals he now has quite a' number, including a dairy of thirty cows and a fine bull which represents a value of several hundred dollars. During the last few years he had devoted considerable attention to the building of high grade cattle and his reputation in" this important'branch of farming has made him widely and favorably known among the leading stock men throughout the central part of
- the state.
Mrs. Beltinck, whose maiden name was Leona Adelia Rommel, was born on April 23, 1858. in Belgium,'arid', as already stated, became the wife of the subject the day before-starting for the United States in 1875. She has borne her husband children, as follows: Florence, wife of Charles Culpert, of Toledo, Ohio; Ona, who inarried Mary Allen and has one child. Florence.
"lives' on the home farm, which he helps cultivate: Romman is married to Miss Edith Faber and lives" on the farm homestead. Mr. and Mrs. Beltinck have moved to Mt. Pleasant, retired from farming, leaving their sons in comfortable circumstances. Fraternally, Mr. Beltinck holds membership with Hive No. 129, Kinghts of the Modern Maccabees, and politically votes with the Democratic party. Himself and wife were reared Catholics and now belong to the church of that order at Mt. Pleasant, to the support of which he is a liberal contributor.
I am seeking any and all information on people with the name of Verrue. According to some vague family history, the Verrue family seems to mainly consist of priests and other church officials, but there seems to also be some connection with this family and the Courtrai region, as well as the region in France near Poitiers. So far I have been able to trace the people back to Francois Verrue, who was born in 1727 in St. Genois, and married Anne Catherine Thibergien, and together had Guillaume Joseph Verrue in 1761 I believe. Rev. Edmond Charles Verrue, Guillaum's grandson migrated from France to the San Francisco Bay area in 1870.

The Verrues also married these families as well:

Vonderougstraite
LaFrance
Randall
Kugle (Cooley)
Nunez
Lewis
Lopez
Chavez

The birth place was indeed spelled differently at the time. It used to be VYNKT but for many years already it is now VINKT.

Also the spelling of names changed a lot. Don't forget that at this period of time, many people could not write or read. So the name Amil does not exist and never existed. This must have been Camil ! Baziel was written Basil too.

I don't know if I will be able to find more information, as for West Flanders, you can find on Internet but not much from East Flanders.

Thank you so much for your reply. My grandfather's name is Baziel Bergez born 24 Feb 1879. His oldest son was named Amil so I am assuming that his father's name was also Amiel as it shows on the certificate. I think you are probably right about the mother's name Julie Vandenberg. His oldest daughter was named Anna Julia. Baziel immigrated in 1903. Is it possible that his birth town at that time was spelled differently? Looking at the spelling it looks like Vijnk or Vijnh or Vynh. After the V if it is not an ij then it must be a y because it has a tail and there are two dots above what would be the ij. It looks as though Baziel has a sibling or maybe more. Is there a way to check online for more siblings? You do not know how exciting this is. We have never known anything about this family. Baziel always spoke very broken English (Flemish) and as children, we were a little afraid. Thank you again, so very much...

Michael VanLandeghem

Michael Vanlandeghem (now VanLandingham or Vallandingham) was my 10X Great Grandfather who came to the Americas sometime around 1660 or before and settled in Northumberland County, Virginia. I can trace the American line easily down to myself, but going back and tracing the Belgian ancestors has proven difficult. I have a possible lead that Michael was the son of Cornelius Vanlandeghem b. 1611 and Marie Declercq b.1619. I am looking for anyone who may have any information to verify this information. Records in Belgium show Michael's birth at 1//7/1643 but no record of death and Michael was the oldest child according to records which would have allowed him to leave to journey to Virginia. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Received a social security application form today that gives my grandfathers parents as Amiel Bergez and (next name not very readable) Zinca Venolewberg? Spelling in the middle may be off a little. The city he came from was Vijnk, Belgium. Can anyone out there help? I would appreciate it very much.

Do you have any relatives names in the 1800's? That is as far back as I have been able to go in my search. I live in Louisiana and my maiden name is Causin, some spell it Cousin, and I have seen it spelled many different ways on here as well. I have been able to trace it back into the 1800, I have heard a similar story but I don't have any names to associate them with. I am from Donaldsonville, Louisiana where most of the family lived in Ascension Parish. You can find records at the clerk of courts office but I do not think they have anything online to search from. There is also a large cemetery where most of my family is buried

I would like to know if you have any information on them. I do know that their oldest daughter was Virginia. She was born in Belgium in 1862. Thanks.

Greetings, Alain!

My great-aunt Lutegard Van Outrive did immigrate to the US after WWI, along with her sister whose first name escapes me at the moment, as well as my grandfather, Urban Van Outrive. All were children of Leopold Van Outrive and Emerance Callens of Rluisselede, Belgium. My grand-father Urban married Marie Clementine Van Caenegham of Syngam, Belgium. My father Harold was their only child. He was born in 1924 and died in 1994.

I have been researching without much success the ancestry of Leopold Van Outrive. I understand his father was Benoit Van Outrive of Ruisselede, and there is a story we heard recently as to his true parentage, impossible to confirm, that he was the product of a liason between King Leopold II and Benoit's housekeeper, that the king paid for the raising and education of Leopold.

As to his mother we do not know anything, even a name.

I have also searched for information about my grandmother Marie Clementine Van Caeneghem of Singem and know only that her father's first initial was C. This from passenger/immigration documents.

I have cousins in Dienze, and in the Leuven area of Belgium.

Thank you for the information you provided thus far!

You should try to locate their emigration records because their names though flemish are not enough to locate records:

Also, most of the information would be on their marriage cert which is less than one hundred years old probably and not public domain yet:

If you get their death cert; you could also get their exact year of birth; naturalisation records their date and place of marriage and then the place of birth of their child with exact dates

Good Luck

Cecile

Van Der Heyden / D'Hooghe

I have hit a road block and I am looking for information regarding my great-grandparents. Here is the information that I currently have:

Marie Van Der Heyden
b. abt 1890 - Belgium
d. abt 1945 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Emigrated 1915

Married 'Fred' D'Hooghe
b. abt 1880 - Belgium
d. abt 1945 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Emigrated 1915

2 children
(my grandmother) Marie D'Hooghe Busalacchi
b. 1912 - Belgium
d. 1999 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Emigrated 1915

Joanne D'Hooghe Burns
b. abt 1935

The name D'Hooghe has been basterdized over the years. They are listed in the 1920 US Census, living in New Hampshire. And the 1930 US Census, living in Milwaukee. The spelling of the last name has been changed to Doogle. My grandmother gave conflicted stories of the spelling change, saying it was changed when they originally entered the US as well as saying that her parents changed it to make it easier to pronounce. She even gave conflicting stories of the original spelling, once saying it was "D'Hooghele". I think her part of not knowing the proper spelling had much to do with the switch to Doogle at such a very young age.

Additional information I remember from my grandmother's stories: She spoke of St. Anne or St. Anna in Belgium as where she was born (village maybe?) or where she was Christened (church??) She always said that the church which held her records were destroyed in the war and she was now "an unknown nobody" - This was said when she was starting to suffer from some dementia in the last years. Other information that I knew was that after living in New Hampshire she went to live with relatives in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan while her father found work. But she never said if this was family on her mother's side (Van Der Heyden) or her father's side of the family.

Sorry for giving so much information, but I figured the more I give the more of a possibility of finding someone who knows something.

Thanks for your assistance :)

Carlo-
several years ago you posted a message inquiring about a Belgian immigrant to Minnesota - Sylvester Housen. Housen was My wife's Great Grandfather, and I am interested in his Beligian background. I can tell you of his descendants - and perhaps you can tell me of his ancestors. Reply here or to campbell@tcq.net. Thank you

Hi Susan. My wife is Ruth DeGeeter, youngest daughter of Screal DeGeeter who was your grandmother's brother. I've got you in our tree and can share data off line if you like.

My original post was an attempt to see if anyone could help us trace down Alphonse DeGeeter's Belgian lineage. The man has proven very elusive. Any insight you might have would be greatly appreciated.

John Irwin

my grandmother was Matilda Mary (Theresa) Degeeter, she married Willam Hartkopp. She lived in Charles City IA but moved to Aurora IL where she passed away after many strokes in the early 70's.
