My great grandfather, Louis Leclair (Leclerq?) arrived at Ellis Island from Antwerp 18 August 1892 on the Westernland, he was 26 years old and bound for Pittsburgh according to the manifest. He was a glassblower, and worked at the new town (1890) of Charleroi, PA - 25 miles south of Pittsburgh - and named for Charleroi, Belgique - a huge portion of the residents were originally from the "sister city." He was accompanied by his 19 year old wife, Desire' (nee Cusselbeau?sp), however, there are no children listed with them, though their first few children, (Julia, 1884; August,1885; Manuel, 1890; and Josephine,1891) had been born in Belgium. The family name is spelled LeClerq in the 1900 Census and names children born in Pennsylvania as: Dolphine, 1894; Augusta, 1896; Joseph, 1897; Victoria, 1899; Paul, came along later, in 1903. They also had another daughter, Catherine, whose birthdate and place I have yet to establish. Obviously there are many descendents, of which I am one, through his daughter Augusta. Any information about any of the Leclair's would be greatly appreciated - and I do have some stories and descendencies to share in return. Contact me @
