I am trying to complete a family genealogy for my great grandparents Edmond Joseph Van Landegem b. 21 Nov 1870 in Maldegem and Maria Seraphina De Wispelaere b. 13 Oct 1873 in Balgerhoeke. They were married in Eecloo on 22 March 1893. They emigrated to Rock Island County, Illinois between 1899 and 1907.

Edmond & Seraphina Van Landegem's children were: Helena b. 14 July 1893; Medardus, b. 4 Mar 1895; Vital b. 19 June 1896; Richard Arthur b. 11 Aug 1898; Rachel b. 1 Feb 1901-d. 22 April 1902; and Clement Theofiel Camiel, b. July 19, 1904. All of these children were born in Eecloo. They later had 3 more daughters and two more sons all born in Illinois.

Edmond & Seraphina's marriage records lists their parents as: His parents--Joseph Van Landegem and Rosalie Yzenbaerd; Her parents--Bernard Seraphin DeWispelaere and Amelia Joos.

I believe that Edmond Van Landegem had at least 3 brothers that remained in Belgium--Vital Van Landegem; Honore Van Landegem m. Celine unknown and had daughter Jeannine in Maldegem in 1934 and the last known address was 182 Noordstraat, Maldegem; and Victor Van Landegem whose last known address was Rue Bonnevie, No. 13; Molenbeek-St.Jean, Bruxelles, Belgique.

Seraphina DeWispelaere had at three brothers: Julius m. Leona Marie DeVoeder who came to Rock Island County, Illinois, Emil DeWispelaere who came to Wisconsin, USA; and H. (perhaps Henry) DeWispelaere, last known address Landbouwir Balgerhoeke by Eekloo Ne 11, Belgium, and sisters: Lousia Maria m. Kamiel Willems and two more sisters in Belgium that are unnamed but were still alive on September 16, 1938 when Seraphina died.

Any help you can give me with these families would be greatly appreciated.

Hi misssmarty3,

Also did some look-ups concerning De Wispelaere / Yzenbaerd genealogy. If still interested I need an e-mail address to send all the records to you. You can send an e-mail address through a private message to me. If not interested anymore, no problem at all, than I can delete my findings of my computer.
Attached the folders I created of the De Wispelaere and Yzenbaerd family.

Kind regards,
Marc

Marc,
I did receive both of your messages and I am quite interested, but currently I am unable to send you a private message. Your ancestry e-mail address is locked to me. I plan to check with my local library this week and see if I can get through on their ancestry program.

I appreciate your efforts on my behalf. I hope to get back to you in a day or so. Grandchildren are visiting this week from out of state so that means lots of excursions to local attractions.

Regards,
Misssmarty3

Hi,
My name is Bart Stemgée, i'm living in Eeklo Belgium and i'm married to Martine De Wispelaere.
She is the granddaughter of the one you call Henry De Wispelaere, himself father of Marcel De Wispelaere my late father in law, who died 10 years ago (born in 1925).
As I know, my wife, as the only child, is (here in Belgium) what we call the last Mohican of the De Wispelaeres as we know, all the male family of late Henry De Wispelaere emigrated to the States.
As I read your text with Henry De Wispelaere as a "landbouwir", which means "farmer" in English, he was indeed a farmer in a little village called Balgerhoeke, near Eeklo.
The name Seraphina reminds me of the story of my late father in law telling me he received every year, as a child for his birthday, an envelope from his aunt from America with congratulations and one one-dollar-bill.
As I was told the most of the family of Henry De Wispelaere (his brothers and sisters) emigrated to Moline, Illinois, and I am trying to find some family in the region.
As my late father in law told me there has been (in the late seventies, I suppose) a great family visit from the States to Eeklo and Balgerhoeke, but he was himself on a trip and so missing his link with the family.
I suppose I can help you scanning some photo's.
Can you help me find my wife's family, do you have links to the De Wispelaere?

Kind regards

Bart Stemgée

Bart,
Thank you for your response. I believe that we are related through the DeWispelaere line. My great grandmother was Seraphina DeWispelaere who married Edmond Van Landegem on March 22, 1893 in Balgerhoeke. Seraphina b. Oct 19, 1873 to Bernardus Seraphin and Amelie Joos DeWispelaere, died September 16, 1938 in Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois. I believe she is the brother of your Henry. I show the following additional siblings for her:
1. Henry
2. Julius DeWispelare married Leona Marie Devoeder/DeVolder in Belgium in 1894. Julius b. 8 April 1869 died in East Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois on July 29, 1942. Parents of 7 children. There were several sons who had sons. Most of these generations are now deceased.
3. Louisa Maria DeWispelaere m. Kamiel Willems. The only information I have on her is that she died after January 11, 1939. I have no knowledge of any children for this couple. I show they remained in Belgium.
4. Emil/Amil DeWispelaere b. May 5, 1880, died after Sept 16, 1938. I have no information on a marriage or children or location for this man.
5. Leonie DeWispelaere b. 13 Mar 1867, d. Oct 23, 1928 in Balgerhoeke, married to Kamiel Motier. One daughter known, Martha Marie Motier.

Note: There might be other siblings of which I am unaware. It seems that Seraphina was the only sister to come to the U.S. with her brothers. All of these siblings located in Rock Island County, Illinois. Many of the DeWispelaeres are buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in East Moline.

I have had no direct contact with the DeWispelaere family in Rock Island County, but have been doing research on them in order to go back further on the DeWispelaere line.

My grandmother Helena Van Landegem DeKeyrel (Seraphina & Edmund's oldest daughter) and her oldest son Frank DeKeyrel made a trip to Belgium at the time of the Brussels World Fair to visit family. I remember that they went to Balgerhoeke and Eecloo at that time. It was the first time my grandmother had returned to Belgium since 1907.

Seraphina and her family first came to the U.S. in 1900 and she was not happy here after the death of two of the children and the family returned to Belgium. Then in 1907 they returned to the United States and remained here for the rest of their lives.

I may have more information in my hard copy files and will be happy to look through these files to see if I have other information on the family. Some of my information came from Death Cards and photos that my great grandparents and grandmother had.

I will attempt to see if I can locate any of the DeWispelaere great grandchildren that may still be living in the Rock Island County, area. This may take some time for the research.

Any information you can fill in on the DeWispelaere line would be greatly appreciated. I am particularly interested in their lives in Belgium.

Bart,
I received an e-mail tonight from a Van Landegem female cousin who is going to be in Belgium in a few weeks. She is the daughter of Clara Van Landegem. Clara Van Landegem was a daughter of Edmund and Seraphina DeWispelaere Van Landegem. She is looking for any relatives that they might be able to contact while they are there. She mentioned they will be in Brugges, Ghent, & Brussels. I don't know if they are on a guided tour or if they are making this visit on their own. Would you be interested in visiting with them?

Sorry for answering so late.
I've been neglecting my private mails for a while and found you send me an email.
I, personally, find it an outstanding moment for meeting my wife's family but as she ill since a few months I fear its not possible for my wife to go and meet the relatives somewhere in the city.
Would you mind giving her our email address (baenma@skynet.be) so they and you too can contact us.

Bart

I am sorry to learn about your wife's illness.

My cousin is already on her way to Belgium, so I will not be able to contact her while she is there. I will send your internet address along to her when she returns. I believe they are on a tour, so they probably will have little time to explore much off the tour schedule.

The Moline-Rock Island area of Illinois has a large contingent of Belgian descendants. It was a popular area in the 1900's for Belgian emigrants. There was lots of good farm land and because of that it was a and still is a center for the manufacture of tractors and other farming equipment and jobs were plentiful for those wanting to work. You may have heard of John Deere products--that's Moline, Illinois.
