I am going to Belgium in Sept. to visit the area where the Minnaert side of my family lived. I know little about Belgian records, except the info. from John Buyse about the Archives in Beveren-Waas. My Minnaerts came from Kaprijke, St. John-In-Ermo, Sint Laureins and that general area. Will the cemeteries in the area still have headstones going back to the 1700's or are headstones retired after a certain number of years like in the larger cities? Also, if I find the address of a specific home or farm where they lived, do you think residents would give me more information? Would it be a good idea to contact the historical society in the area? Let me know your experiences in visiting Belgium and what I can hope for. I am listing my Minnaert lineage.

Hi Mieke,

Can you give me a time period for those individuals? I'm going to the LDS library to do some additional research, since I'm missing the children of two Minnaert families. There is a Paulina way back in 1659-1694 and possibly in the 1800's.

Hello,

I presume you have seen my postings about ACHILLE and EMMA (Dierickx) MINNAERT.
Has your research revealed any connection at all with my line?

Betty - lucky you! I hear you are touring Belgium and will meet John Buyse, who has also assisted me in locating more about my MINNAERTS.

My grandfather: Gustavus Maria Jozef Polydorus, born 09-04-1895 in Aalst

My great-grandfather: Achille Maria Josephus Minnaert, born 16-05-1866 in Gent; died in Berchem in 1939.

His father: Polydorus Evaristus Theophilus Minnaert, born in 1836. (married Regina Sophia Cromphout)

Pieter Alphonse Minnaert born in 1802 (married Coleta Johanna Liedts)

Pierre Jean Minnaert born in 1770 (married Catherine Colette Prieels)

Please keep me in mind if you find any connections.

I also would be interested to know if tombstones exist.

Also, I am hoping to locate anything on the Education and Musical Background of Achille and presumably other members of his extended family.

In a U.S. Newspaper article from about 1927, it says Achille who was in charge of vocal and instrumental music at St. Mary's College.... was a Graduate of the University of Louvain and of the Conservatory of Alost, Belgium.. Also that he had
"35 years of experience leading bands and choral societies in this country (U.S.) and Europe."

Any further leads would be much appreciated.!

Sincerely,

Corinne

Hi Corinne,

I have seen your postings about your Minnaerts from around Gent. I have not seen a connection yet between our families, but I met a Minnaert relative in Kaprijke while I was visiting and he has a wealth of information on the Minnaerts from the area. As soon as I get the entire file, I'll check for their names. I learned information about headstones while I was in the area north of Gent. The headstone space can be rented for a few years up to a "forever" time frame, depending on how much the family could afford for the deceased. After the time expires, the headstone is removed and the new "resident", whom I believe is buried above the old one, rents the headstone place. I did not have time to check many cemeteries, but I know there are no Minnaert headstones currently in Sint-John-in-Ermo. I'm still new at researching in Belgium and would appreciate someone's suggestions on how to find who is buried in a particular cemetery.

Hi,

Wonderful to receive a reply and I look forward to any additional information you "unravel".

Overall, was it a "successful trip"? Did you meet with John Buyse?

I'm not sure how far the "Gent area" that you mention extends..but I know John located registries from the Oudenaarde area

Also, my grandfather and his siblings were born in Aalst..

Although I've posted some messages on the English language boards and once or twice other kind strangers have tried the Dutch Boards, I wonder if the Belgian people in general access the Message Boards and would be aware that there are descendants in North America hoping to establish contact.

Please keep me posted and best wishes in your research!!

Hello,

Just doing a follow-up to see if any more information has surfaced from your contacts in Belgium about possible
links with my MINNAERT (Achille) or Dierickx (great-grandmother Emma) line.

Have you posted on any Boards that are in the languages used in Belgium?

I would wonder if that might lead to greater connections, overall.

I realize sometimes the Surnames can be transcribed in various formats. Recently, I was quite surprised that for the 1911 Census in Canada...my Minnaert Family Unit was actually indexed as Minnent.

It it wasn't for the keen eye of a "kind stranger", I may not have located them.

I hope you've made progress in your searches and please do keep me in mind if you hear of anything remotely applicable to my Minnaerts.

Thank you.

Corinne (Minnaert) Postnikoff
