Unwin / van Eckenroode

I'm looking for any information on a Francis Unwin, believed to have been born in Brussels around 1885. The first reference I currently have is an 1891 census record in Yorkshire and the last a crossing from Cherbourg to New York in 1927.

I believe his parents may have been Fred Unwin (originally from Yorkshire) and Philoméne van Eckenroode.

Any information will be gratefully received.

Tom

Family of Mr. Guillaume A. Ratte

(7-23-2009)

I'm trying to locate surviving family of Mr. Guillaume A. Ratte (born Feb. 23, 1911 in St. Gilles) and who died July 20, 1978 in Anderlecht (Brussels Area), Belgium. He was married to Maria Louise Emma De Decker on March 10, 1943, and she was born Dec. 13, 1914 in Etterbeek and she died June 15, 2007 in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. It is believed that they had no children. Last known address for him was 242 Quai De L'Industrie B-1070 Brussels, Belgium. If there is a researcher who could help me find out the name and address of any surviving next-of-kin for Mr. Ratte only, I would be very grateful. Would also like to find out the names of his parents, his brothers and/or sisters, and any nieces or nephews he might have. Will reimburse reasonable expenses up to $50.00 (US dollars) but you must ask my permission before you start your research. Public records there are normally released only to family members, so your search strategy should include a way to get around that obstacle. You can respond directly to my e-mail address if you prefer: keith345@hotmail.com

Thank you.
K.
Hello,
I just happened upon you post. My mother's family is from Kalymnos (Nitis) Nicholas and Kalotina. Grandmother's last name I will have to get. Well Klimis is the last name of the man that my Grandmother Kalotina's sister married. She had a son Nick, and then she passed not soon after the birth. My grandmother Kalotina raised this boy for a while while the father was in Brussels. My grandfather had a sister Maria - who married a man who owned the grocery store in the town of Kalymnos. Her adopted son(who was also her nephew by blood) Manolis died a number of years ago - SOMEHOW???

My grandfather had a brother John that lived his life in Rhodes - til his death- bad eyes would not allow him into the states.
Another brother Michael lived in Greece and died young of TB. He had children Anthony, Pete, Anna and the son they gave up due to being poor Manolis-to their sister Maria the store owner in Kalymnos.

My grandparents lived in Bronx, NY for most of their lives and had 5 children. My grandfather was a steel painter and my uncles continued the tradition in NY. Their children - Pete, Kaliope, Orotheos, Drussos & Mary who always goes by Anna. Drus passed years ago and Orotheos (Ted) sadly just passed a few months ago.

Let me know about you! Your connection - where you live and anything else.

I hope this helps you! and reaches you.
Mary
There are three possible candidates, but you may need to "google" since I'm not sure which ones would have existed at that time.
There are the Boitsfort, Sterrebeek and Groenendael racetracks ("hippodrome" in French). Sterrebeek would be the closest to Tervuren, but I have a feeling that it was only opened between the two world wars.
All 3 are on the same side of Brussels as Tervuren, though clearly what today is a 15 minute drive in a car today would have have represented a considerably longer journey in the 1890s.

Re: War Brides of WW2

I'm assuming that the war bride you are interested in emmigrated to the US after the war. If you know the name of the ship she came here on and the approximate arrival date you can contact your nearest branch of the National Archives (nara.gov) and they might be able to give you some info. If you live near enough you could also visit the archves for other research.

Good luck with it!
Ruth

Lambert

My Great Grandfather, Joseph Lambert was born in Brussels, Belgium. He married my Great Grandmother Victorine Dewaele. They had my Grandmother, Alice Lambert. My Great Grandfather was killed in 1916 in WWI. I believe his parents were Camille Lambert and his wife's name was Mathilda. I am working on our family history and am at a bit of a road block with their family. During the war my Grandmother, Alice moved to Middelkerke ( Flanders ) to live with HER Grandparents, while her mother stayed in Brussels to work. Any information on their family would be greatly appreciated. It's hard as they all spoke different dialects of the language. My Grandmother came to America when she was 20 years old and her mother remarried to Cyril Feryn. My Grandfather was also from Belgium, but he was from Kortermark ( corermark ). He came over to America when he was very young. His name was Michel Cool, Parents were Joseph and Victorine Cool. They all settled in Lyon County, MN ( Marshall is the town ).

Thank you in advance for ANY information someone may have!
Cathy
otlakerat@tds.net

Brussels racetrack

I have been researching a daughter line and found that 3 sisters had all married men from England in the late 1890s. Further investigations revealed that 2 of the 3 men were jockeys. The families lived in Tervuren, a village to the East of Brussels. Was there a horse racing track near Tervuren or in Brussels where the men could have worked in the time period from 1890 to 1910? If anyone knows about the track, could you let me know how I can find out more on the site?
