Dear Joanna, following our contact last year I would like to share with you information I have found about Eric Uniacke
O´brien Oyler. He was born in 1890 in Paysandu, Uruguay. He left Argentina for England in 1914 to participate in the Second World War. He was a RAF pilot. After the war he travelled to several places I guess because he was a fellow in the Geographical British Society and did some work on astrology. He died in London in 1947.

Regards

Carlos

Dear Joanna: Thank you for your answer. I understand we are somekind relatives, I guess cousins in a second generation. I do not have much information about Constance or Annie besides de one I could get from Internet. There are many relatives, Hoare, looking for contacts with descendants of William Oliver Simpsom Hoare and Catherine James. The fact is that there was little interest to pass on the family history to descendants, so I guess I am the only one on this side investigating Hoare family background. Your answer is the first contact I have with decendants of Annie.
I know Oliver G oare had three children, Barry, Patrick and Helena, but I could not find the decendants yet. He was a famous Polo player in Argentina and use to rice Polo horses. Mi granfather Basil had three children, Elva, Dora and Charle, my father. They are all gone. I am glad you answer my note, this looks as a promising family investigation team .

Regards

Carlos
Carlos_hoare@hotmail.com

Hello, I'm trying to find my father's relatives. He was born Carlos Alberto Aguirre in Salto, Uruguay 1935. He married Nahir Gladys Piriz de Quiroga in 1962 and I was born in Montevideo in 1967. He was orphaned at a very young age and raised by various uncles and aunt who were older than my paternal grandparents and passed away many years ago. Would dearly love to find some family history out for him. Please email me with any information or help as to where to begin searching as I've had no luck so far. Thank you so much for your help.

Hello
Thank you for answering this post sorry I took so long to reply and I think we are cousins?
My Father is John Justin Ledesma (The Actor) and Grandson of Annie (the baroness)! His mother was Constance Oyler and my Grandfather Alfredo Ledesma.
If you are Basil's grandson, then we are related and I think its wonderful! I would love to know more about you. Do you live in Argentina and if so where? I live in Hampshire, England near where Annie and Basils father lived before they all went to Argentina, and am very curious about Argentina and our family.

I would very much appreciate any further information you could give me on either Annie or Constance or her brother Eric Uricke O'brien. They were born in Paysandu? I have got allot of information from the peerage site about the Hoares and the Oylers, but I know hardly anything about what happened to them in the Argentine. I know that Oliver George StClair who was Basil and Annie's elder brother was in Argentina and I have found he married out there to Helen Peel. Annie also married out there. I am guessing they had a business there??
I would love to know more. I wonder if you have any information or photos. I have never seen a photo of my Grandmother or great-grand mother or Father.

Very kindest regards
Su prima

Joanna

Isaac Oyler was merried to Annie Frances Isabella Hoare who was the sister of my grandfather Basil O´brien Hoare. I found information about the Oylers in the history of Argentina colonization. They founded a colony in Sanabria, Cordoba province. She was a very nice looking woman. After Isaac death she married a dutch count named Vincent Leopold van Tuyll. I understand she had a grandson named Justiniano de Ledesma who was a movie star in England, John Justin.

Gracias,
Bette
I haven't had luck finding the departure manifest so I would like to know if there is an arrival passenger manifest and if so, how do I obtain a copy of it?

Here is the background information:

My family took the ship ESPANA from Hamburg, Germany to Montevideo, Uruguay at some point between 1921 - 1923.

Between Hamburg and Uruguay, the Espana made stops including: Portugal, Spain, Dakar Africa, Belem Brazil, and Rio de Janeiro.

I am looking for four passengers travelling together as a family.

Their first names are as follows:

1. STEFAN, born 1885 (head of household).
2. ANNA, born 1886 (wife).
3. IVAN or JIVAN, born 1904 (son).
4. CORIOLAN, born 1915 (son).

The family may have used the surname DRAGILA. However, my grandfather (Coriolan) told me that his father (Stefan) changed their surname to DRAGILA at some point either while in South America or before.

All of their birthplaces should be listed as either Romania or Serbia (Austro-Hungary at that time).

Thanks!

Diego Sandes is the father of my great grandfather and I would like to find out what happened to him. I hear he was something of a black sheep and may have went to Chicago.

Very, very kind of you.

I like your suggestion of writing to the American Embassy in Uruguay - great idea, and I'll do this just as soon as I get a spare moment.

Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers,

Nikki.

Hello, Nikki: I have spent HOURS trying to locate the address of the "Cementerio Británico de Uruguay", that is the British Cemetery of Uruguay, at no avail.May I suggest you write-email- to the Embassy of USA in Uruguay and ask where are the records archived. In reading the story of the German battleship "Graf Spee" Vs. the British battleships in the Rio de la Plata battle, during the Second World War, it tells about an old sailor who visited his captain's tomb and he says: Administrator of Cemetery: George Roper, English Navy Captain, retired, 53 years old but I couldn't find the date of the article to find out if the man may still be alive. I don't know if Mulhall mentions the cemetery in BiSA. I am very sorry I cannot be of further help
Regards,
Renée

Hi Renée,

Thanks so much for your research - it was very kind of you to look into this for me.

I have however already found that information on the BISA site and VC is a second cousin of mine. The problem is that the births are only listed as “enquiries”. Agnes and Matilda were the sisters of my great great grandfather Alexander Proctor. They were born in Scotland, so I would not expect there to be a Uruguayan birth record for them. The problem is that there seems to be no official record of Alexander’s birth. The only thing I could find was a baptism record on http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/scotsinargpat/index.htm. Maybe there just wasn’t any official birth record.

As for Alexander’s mother Catherine Proctor (nee Durie), I can find absolutely nothing for her. I believe she died of typhoid/cholera in 1873 when she was about 44. Some time after that, the father took his three young motherless children back to Scotland.

As you’re from Uruguay and obviously know a lot about family history, I’m wondering if you think that either of these events would
(a) have even been recorded in some official way, and
(b) do you know how I can check this with the Uruguayan Births Deaths and Marriages?

Thanks also for the information about the Durie with initial D who’s a Railway Director. I don’t think that’s any relation as I don’t have anyone with that initial in my tree.

Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers, Nikki Stern.
