Matin

Dear Nicollete,
I just found the note on immigrants from Russia to Luxembourg (Grand Duché de Luxembourg) and Paraguay. I am a descendant of the Birukoff's - Eugénie, née Lomteff and John (Jean) Birukoff. My mother, Eugénie is buried in the cemetery of Mertert, and so is my maternal grand-father, Dimitri Lomteff. Also, my very young sister, Marina Birukoff is buried in the same four-grave site. In 1963, my father (John Birukoff) and my sister emmigrated to the US. The other person is General Polsikoff, a close friend of the family.
As far as the other Russians buried there, most were our friends and acquaintances. For instance, Antonina Nagornoff, née Anissimoff was employed at our house as the house keeper. Alexis Bondar(r at the end of his name), was our tutor in Russian language, literature and history. Treschtine was our priest. Colonel Kermanoff(w) emigrated to Paraguay but then returned to Luxembourg.

I hope that this sheds a little more light on this very interesting period in the history of Luxembourg
Tito

Mary

Just seen your post - though it is many years old! Is this the Anglo-Paraguayan Land Company? If it is, the time frame would probably be different? I am thinking of the one that was formed to pay back those who had bonds on the 1872 Paraguayan loans.

If that is the case, I can tell you where to find further information.

Mary

Lt. (later Commander) Hunter Davidson served on the Confederate ironclad "Merrimac" during its famous battle with the Union ironclad "Monitor" in 1862 during the War Between the States. After the war, Hunter left the United States, and he eventually married a lady named Enriqueta. I understand that Hunter and his wife are buried in the "Davidson tomb" in Paraguay. Does anyone have a list of Hunter and Enriqueta's children? Does anyone know of any LIVING Davidsons from this family? Thanks!

Hi claire it's cousin Sarah! I finally got me an email address, its sarahlousewell@yahoo.com, so we can email each other now, i'm waiting on the death certificate for gertrude may collings, that may shed some light on where they were in 1885, and narrow our search down a little, provided it is her! you may have noticed the use of the name sewell in my email address - i've kinda adopted that name for my jewellery making "thing" that i'm starting. Anyways, i'm still alive, have absolutely not forgotten about you, and will send you a copy of the death cert when it comes, sorry about the delay in sending for it - i'm hopeless! hope to hear from you soon, love Sarah.
ps, no, you didn't tell me bout how W.K. got his name, to do with his mother Louisa Burrows, i'd love to know!

Looking for information about Willian Knibb COLLINGS and wife Amy Constance(nee SEWELL). William born in England 1846, son of Baptist Minister.

We believe William and Amy left the UK for Paraguay around 1890 with at least 1 child (Harold William b 1880). He might have been in trade (had been an African Merchants clerk in Liverpool) or missionary/teacher. The son Harold returned to the UK in time to marry in 1908. Its possible their daughter Gerturde May Collings was also in Paraguay and also returned to England by 1903. We have no idea what happened to either William or Amy Constance

Any information/clues welcomed.

Could you find any information on descendents in Paraquay of Jim and Ann(?) McNamara who migrated to Paraquay in the 1890s as part of William Lane's New Australia movement. I believe that Jim and his wife returned to Australia, but their four children stayed in Paraquay. Christmas cards were exchanged between the family during the 1930s.
Regards
Annette Perry Smith
