Hello Desiree, a happy Easter to you!

Thank you very much for your kindly responding.

Prof. Marion Philadelphia in Los Angeles is a descendant of the European branch of this family. She was the one who told me about her ancestor Jacob Philadelphia's son, Samuel (b. 1779), who owned a plantation in Guyana. It is possible that he took an African woman as his wife who became the ancestor of the families Philadelphia in Guyana.

There are three places called Philadelphia in Guyana:
(1) Philadelphia - Estate - Mahaica-Berbice - left bank of the Canje River, right bank of the Berbice River
06.12 N 57.27 W
(2)Philadelphia - Village - Essquibo-Demerara - right bank of the Essequibo River, left bank of the Demerara River 06.52 N 58.22 W
(3) Philadelphia - 05.51 N 57.40 W
One of those, perhaps named after Samuel Philadelphia, could have been the place of origin of the families Philadelphia in Guyana.

A handful of families Philadelphia has lived in England since the 1960's:

I'd really appreciate if you could shed some light on the origin of your family.

What do you know about your oldest direct male ancestor named Philadelphia? Where did he live? What were his given names?

Do you happen to know anything about the tailor Robert Newton Philadelphia (b. abt. 1840/50), the grandfather of the teacher William Alexander Philadelphia (b. abt. 1900) of Demerara?

Thank you so much in advance!

Best to you and your family!

With kindest regards,
Lars Menk
