I have since found out that James Grant came home on holiday to Scotland in 1932 and left from a port called Talacahuano - he was a smelterman at the mines and his wife was called Margaret. I am not sure when but both apparently died in Chile.

Alexander came back to Scotland in the 1930s

They were both sometimes called Finlayson

I have been researching my husbands great grandfather Anthony Arthur Kinsley and found out that he went to Chile in around 1890. I have been told that he had several children while there but I am a little unclear what happened as he arrived there with a wife (Ellen)and came back with a different wife (Mary Hannah "Polly"). He was in the Villa Alegre area.

I think he was there to work on the trains or something .. everything is unclear as not much is known about him or what he did out there.

Any help would be more than appreciated

Sorry, but they haven't been posted anywhere I'm afraid.
Many years ago I was in contact with a connection to the Mason family, and that was very illuminating as to some of the Mason/Kindley history. But that was some twenty years ago.
I also have many letters written from Chile by my family in the late 19c detailing much of their day to day life, Thomas is included in some of the letters.
Oh wow! A bigamist!I have the records of his marriage to Ruth Mason in Edinburgh. I would love to see photographs of them all. I notice that Angus and Mina both died very young, how tragic that he fell from his high chair.
How do you pronounce your surname? Does it rhyme with kind or with kin?
As you know, the Masons were a York family and my father always reckoned that his mother (Florence Neary) and one of his his aunties were bequeathed money in the 1920's, about £1000 each. A lot of money in those days. He said the money came from one of their aunts who went off to America and made good, but that the bulk of the fortune was left to York minster restoration fund.
I think the most likely candidate for this story is Ruth Kindley, his mother's maternal aunt. She died in 1922 and although there seems to be no evidence of her travelling abroad, if Thomas was involved in gold/copper mining or more likely building the infrastructure for a mining industry,I assume he was sending money home to her and his children who seemed to be living with various of her sisters at different times. I also assume the money she left to her nieces was a sort of recompense for giving them a home?
I would love to know more about the circumstances surrounding Thomas's death and when it occurred.

You've probably come to the right place for information. I have been digging away at the Chilean connection to my family - Kindley - for many years. Lucky enough to have made contact with a family source in Chile and to have been given copies of photographs of Thomas and even of the children left in York (including their son Angus Magin Kindley who died when he fell from his high chair). I do have his (Thomas) marriage cert in Copiapo and also his death certificate and what and where he died.
Chile is not the easiest place to negotiate (notwithstanding the Spanish language)but my persistence paid off.
12 years after your original post I am looking for similar information. I know about son Thomas who married my great grandmother's sister, Ruth Mason. He seems to have abandoned Ruth in the UK with their surviving two children (of four)and returned to Chile to start up a second family with Clothilde Illanes in Copiapo (see familysearch.com). Ruth left a substantial amount of money to York minster restoration fund when she died in 1922 and I suspect this came from Thomas because the main reason for the existence of Copiapo seems to be the gold/copper mines. Couldn't help noticing that one of the rescued miners from that mine a couple of years back had the surname Illanes! Not sure how common a surname it is?

Hi Brian, Thank you for your help and interest. I have a problem with James's name. In his father's will he is known as Herbert James Arthur Richardson, but I have seen it written as either James Arthur Richardson Bedwell or James Herbert Arthur Richardson. His parents divorced and James and his mother Gwen remained in Valparaiso Chile and were there when his father Arthur died in in 1939. I know in Chile that the wife's maiden name is added on the end of the name of the child, so this is probably what happened here.
I think that James remained in Chile and he had a daughter Elizabeth, but I haven't been able to make contact with them.
Thank you again for your help.
Regards
June.

My 3rd-great-grandfather Gabriel Vasquez was born in Valparaiso, Chile about 1838. In his marriage record in Altar, Sonora, Mexico from 1863 it lists his parents as Jose Vasquez & Agustina Rojas. I suspect they came to Sonora from Chile sometime between 1855-1858. Anyone have suggestions for where to look for a birth record for Gabriel or a marriage record for Jose Vasquez and Agustina Rojas in Valparaiso?

I'd also be interested to know if ship's records exist from Valparaiso during this time.

I have just received an old publication (1917) compiled by the Rev. C.H.Hodgson regarding the history of St. Pauls, Valparaiso. For any of us who are looking for Anglican ancestors who may have been baptised, married of buried in Valparaiso there is one illuminating sentence "...1869...on Nov 10th a disastrous fire took place at the British Consulate in which the whole of the archives were destroyed including "Register Books Nos 1 and 2 of the British Episcopal Church Establishment" hence the scantiness of all records up to this date. The Minutes Books from 1869 are complete..."
The publication has some names and particulars of notables and details of the Memorial Windows and Brasses in the church.
There is also some history of St. Peters, Vina del Mar.

Please can anyone help me with information reagarding my great grandfather, James Young, who went to Chile in the mid to late 1860's. He married Mary Murdoch (I think maybe in Chile) and they had 3 or 4 children born there in either La Serena or Valparaiso. Their names are James Murdoch Young (born c.1869), Juanita Scott Young (born c.1872) Charles Young (born c.1870, died 26.01.1871) and possibly Santiago Young (d.o.b. unknown). James Young was a Gas Engineer at La Serena Gas Works. James, Mary, James Murdoch and Juanita Scott later returned to Scotland (I have details of this). I looking for details of the marriage of James and Mary and also the births of their children. Any information at all will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in anticipation.
