I am trying to trace part of my family, who emigrated to Chile in the 1890s. What I know is this:
Mary Clara Louisa Langdale Simons and Henry William Shand were married in Hampstead in 1883, then emigrated to Chile and formed part of the Welsh colony in Patagonia. Henry William Shand (who might have been Henry Samuel Shand, but I have been unable to establish who his parents were). They had ten children: William Vazie Dyke Shand was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1886; I know nothing more about him. Next, Guy Dorian Shand was born in 1887 and died that year. Helen Gladys Dorothea Shand was born in 1888; she married Arthur Lyn Lewis in 1919. I have been unable to follow their lives any further. Gilbert Pitcairn Selwyn Shand was born on 14 July 1890. Phyllis Mary Delecia Shand was born on 30 November 1891 in Hampstead; she married Charles Rose (about whom I know nothing) and they had one son, James Henry Rose, who died in 1924. James’ death is noted in the family Bible. Now things get complex: Henry Norman Shand was born on 6 March 1893 at sea, the story being that the family were on their way from Australia to Chile. All these dates come from the Simons family Bible, and are reasonably well substantiated, as correspondence continued with the family in Chile up to the 1960s. Celia Daphne Shand was born in 1893, presumably in Chile; I know nothing more of her. Joyce Clara Shand was born in 1896 and married Carl Amber – again I have been able to establish nothing more. The next sister, Gwenith Averil Shand, was born in 1899 and died young in 1908. The youngest was Charles Roy Shand, born in 1903 There is an undated 1960s letter from one of my great-aunts which says that she has heard from him, naming him as Roy Shand. He had given up his job at Maria Elena, and gone to Southern Chile and was teaching English at a Roman Catholic University there. He died in 1976.
Can anyone help further?
