Hi Richard,

I know that this answer is very late, but I think that as well as I have come to your topic on the internet, other researchers will find these texts too.

My name is Rainer Pfeiffer Novelli and I come from Monte Santo, Minas Gerais. Through my research, I came again and again to families who have migrated from Montemurro to this region of Brazil. It must have been a mass movement. You can find (many) montemurresi families in the surrounding cities like: São José do Rio Pardo, Guaranésia, Guaxupé, Arceburgo, Casa Branca, Mococa, São Sebastião do Paraíso and Monte Santo de Minas. Some of these cities are in the state of São Paulo, other in Minas Gerais.

Around 1880, the railroad was completed to Casa Branca and the journey here was relatively simple. Many cities were founded during this period and the economy boomed. From 1871, the newborn children of slaves were free and there was not enough manpower for the labor-intensive coffee cultivation. In 1888 slavery was abolished in Brazil. Many slaves left the farms and moved to the cities, it lacked workers.

Beginning in 1880, the coffee growing in this area increased dramatically and there were many workers wanted. There were immigration agents in Italy, recruiting workers for the large coffee farmers. The trip was paid by the farmers and thousands of Italians arrived here, alone or with the whole family.

When I searched the microfilms of the stato civile ofMontemurro, I found many names that I knew from my area in Brazil: Lattaro, Ciuffi, Imperatrice, Dimase, Marra, Robilotta, Mazzilli, Latorraca, Lo Bosco, Ventura, Solitto, Potenza, Zamarian, Parisi ...

The dialect of Montemurro was spoken in some remote farms till to the 40´íes of the XX century.

Many descendants of these immigrants moved later to the surrounding large cities by the industrialization of Brazil, especially to Campinas, São Paulo, Franca and Ribeirão Preto.

These were some general information about the immigration of families from Montemurro to Brazil.

Greetings!

Rainer

The familysearch.org web site has an assortment of records for Brazil. When you reach the home page, scroll down to "Browse by Location" and click on "Caribbean, Central and South America". I do not know if there are records for the town you mentioned, but at least you can search here.

Good luck.

Help with Boselli from Mantua to Brazil and back

Hello,

My name is Emanuele Notarangelo, my mother is Daniela Boselli and her father was Oreste Boselli, born in Poggio Rusco (Mantua), Italy, 1 apr 1928 and dead in Milan, Italy, 6 jun 1992.

Mother of Oreste was Maria Boselli (Sao Paulo 31 jul 1895 - ? 14 dic 1962). Maria had one brother Jmer Boselli and one sister Jandira Boselli. I suppose they both born in Brazil too.

I know that Maria's family was from Poggio Rusco (Mantua), but I don't know who and when went to Brazil (Sao Paulo?).

Maria married a man called ? Bassi, I don't know if in Italy or in Brazil, because I don't know when she came to Italy. They had two children, Giulio Bassi and Gilio Bassi.

Father of Oreste Boselli was Armando Bardini (? 5 oct 1893, Milan 10 nov 1978), who never married Maria Boselli.
Armando Bardini's family was from one village near Mantua too (I don't know if exactly Poggio Rusco), he had at least one brother, Alessio Bardini, who married Jandira Boselli (sister of Maria Boselli!).
Armando Bardini had one wife and two children, Elio Bardini and Elia Bardini.
I think Armando Bardini knew Maria Boselli in Italy and they had Oreste Boselli (my grand-father) and Elsa Boselli (his real sister) in Poggio Rusco; also Alessio Bardini and Jandira Boselli knew each other and married in Italy.

My mother thinks that her grandgrandparents' names were Bonfiglio and Apolonnia, but she couln't remind if they were parents of Maria Boselli or parents of Armando Bardini...

Maybe you could help me finding Maria Boselli birthplace and name of mother and father and I could look for them in lists of emigration from Mantua to Sao Paulo. I saw Sao Paulo Archive website, it seems if I want the birth certificate copy I must know the exact district where Maria Boselli born...but I am not sure if she was really born in Sao Paulo!! :-)

I also wrote to Mantua archive, I hope I will find there something about Bardini family.

Any help will be really appreciate, and I apologize for writing lot of words (in bad english).

My kindest regards,

Emanuele Notarangelo, Milano, Italy

Dear Laurenco,

My grandmother was Luisa Frugoli, from Diecimo, between Lucca and Borgo. I traveled there in 2000, and met with the Falsiroli family, who are descendants of Firmino Frugoli, my grandmother's brother. There are other cousins in Diecimo. My aunt, Anna Lippi Bryant, traveled to Brazil some time in the Fifties, and met with your relatives there. My brother Ron would also like to hear from you. The local church holds some records of the Frugolis, but I did not have time to research them.

Hello Lourenco,
We are no doubt cousins. My grandmother was Luisa Frugoli, the sister of Lorenzo. She married first Daniele Lippi, of the same town in Toscana, Diecimo, of which the nearest political unit is Borgo a Mozzano. They lived at Numero 3, Via del Fuoco, Diecimo, in the same house for over 250 years. Nonna Luisa immigrated to San Francisco with twoof her brothers, Amadeo and Giovanni, and another brother, Firmino, came but went back to Diecimo. His daughter Maria married a man named Falsirolli, and his son, Mario, lives in Lucca. Nonna Luisa's second husband (Daniele Lippi died of tuberculosis) was Giovanni Gattavara, from Liguria, and they had 4 children, Angelo, Mario Gino and Norma, my mother. I have two brothers, James and John Bruce, who also live in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. I have seen photographs of your grandfather and grandmother when they visited Nonna Luisa in Napa, California. My e-mail address is: roncronin1@hotmail.com, and I would love to hear from you and learn about your part of the family.
Sincerely,
Your cousin Ron

My husband's line goes from John coming to the USA and marrying Emily Pauline Sousa. They lived in Lowell, MA, and their kids were Teofilo (Tiophile?), Abelia (Abel), and Leonore Peters. He's the great-grandson of Tio (that was what the family always called the man, at least). According to my husband's grandmother Barbara, John (his name would probably have been Joao in Portuguese), John changed his name to Peters when he got to the USA. We've seen Tio and his family listed in Brazil, but there's questions as to how they got there, since his parents were most likely from Portugal. If you've any other information, we would love to hear it. Maybe we can help each other out.

Thanks
Jess

Hi Jess,

John and Emily had another son - Alfred A. so I have a total of 4 kids. Alfred was my grandfater. So I guess that would make John and Emily my great grandparents.

So would that make your husband my cousin? Would love to compare notes, you can email me at davekrista@gmail.com

There is a handwritten footnote in an old family Bible on the brother of one of my ggg grandfather which states that he left England around 1850 and settled in Rio. His name was Richard Massey and he was born in 1827. I would like to look for this thread. How do I research marriages and births in Brazil in the 19th Century.

I found an interesting online birth in 1895 for a Ricardina Massa though it was in Sao Paolo, born to a Jose Massa (14 Sept 1895 Nossa Senhora da Penha, Itapira, São Paulo, Brazil). Ricardina is not a common Latin name and this could be Richard Massey's granddaughter and he may have changed Massey to Massa to blend in and moved to Sao Paolo. Of course, I am just speculating.

Could anyone with experience in South American research give me a clue?

THank you,

Neil Massey

Rachel,

I'm doing research for dissertation at Universidade Federal do ABC that includes Alfred Cownley Slater.
In the archives of the University Mackenzie stated that he arrived in Brazil in 1904 and began working there in 1905 as professor of chemistry. He founded the first chemistry courses this school.
During the years of professional experience, Professor Slater has investigated the use of oil shale as an energy source and published in 1932 the work Aproveitamento dos Schistos pyrobetuminosos, o Petróleo e a Hulha.
In Mackenzie College, was director of the School of Engineering, Technical School and Junior High Course. Before he died, on December 29, 1958, was responsible for the Department of Laboratory Technology.
Published books: Minerais e Minérios, Rochas e Geologia para Engenheiros.
It is known that in England he graduated from the University of Leeds, was a member of the Society and Chemical Industry and was professor at the Institute of Mechanic taught at Pudsey.
In the Mackenzie Presbyterian University campus there is a building with his name.
In the photo below, Professor Slater is in dark clothes.
I believe that more information is, however, the research is still at the beginning.
If you know more information, please let me know cristianecazeri@yahoo.com.br, I'll be very grateful.
graciously
Cristiane
John Cosser Mather + Charlotte Anne Mather nee Wright

Hello, John C was born in 1859 in England. Charlotte was born in England too in 1860. They do not appear in the English Censuses between 1871 and 1901. In the 1911 Census it estimates that they had been married 25 years so therefore circa 1886. Two of their children, Harold George Mather and John Mather were born in Brazil. Harold in 1887 and John in 1891. In England there are no outgoing passenger lists to check before 1890. Am not sure what they were doing in Brazil and obviously why they went in the first place. I have tried to search the incoming passenger lists for their return to England but there are too many Mather's listed. It is only an assumption as I can find no marriage for John and Charlotte in England that perhaps they married in Brazil. Does anyone have the means please to search for a marriage for me and anything else they may be able to find on this family please? I do not have a worldwide subscription to Ancestry so am therefore asking for help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Kathryn

Hi DVC,

We are putting together the family tree for Correa. How is she related? My grandmother was Correa and is a direct heir, so I am as well. Are you dealing with Brazil? or Uraguay? Paraguay? My grandmother hired an attorney and it was proven that we were directly related. So we must be related to your wife. We would like to chat and find out how we can further complete our family tree with Correa. Please contact me through email at Greeneyed630@yahoo.com or call 209-409-7546 any time.

Rachael,

You will find a fair bit of biographical information about Alfred if you use google.com.br and cut&paste what you find into Google Translate (I'm assuming you're not fluent in Portuguese!).

The Alfred Slater building still exists at the Mackenzie Institute.

Alfred died in 1958, two years before John Henry.

Regards,
Jon
(my connection is via the Newcastle Slaters, of whom Alfred's father John George was a scion).

Schleyder or Schleider in Brazil after 1891

I deal with family history and ask for help in finding an ancestor from the 19th century, Mr. Francis Schleyder. I guess that was one of the emigrants to Brazil, because:

a) my son great-great-great-grandfather Schleyder Alois (1817 - 1890), copper-engravinger in Prague, was born on 3 September 1867, as the youngest of eight children (proven in the index register births) and was christened as Francis. Relatives of another branch of the family from Australia confirmed to me, that the family was said that one of Schleyder sons went to America.

b) Father of Francis Schleyder died in 1890, when Franz is on the list of passengers - emigrants from Hamburg in 1891 is noted that Franz Schleyder with Valparaiso ships left Europe to Brazil. Corresponds to age (born 1867) and last residence is listed Mlada Boleslav (according to the Prague konskrips his father Alois had the right home in Mlada Boleslav, and according to "schematism Kingdom of Bohemia" in 1842 was his grandfather, Robert Karl Schleyder in Mlada Boleslav official) .

c) on Memorial website Imigrante in Sao Paulo a name Schleider find a computer record of the immigrant Franz Schleider, no relatives, arrive in Brazil on 5 February 1891

d) and finally in the Brazilian National Archives, I got a copy of the report coastal police the passengers to a ship of 5 February 1891 in Rio de Janeiro. On the ship Valparaiso is Franz Schleyder - under the number 85th that he came from Austria-Hungary with one suitcase.

The further fate Francisco Schleydera in Brazil I could not find anything yet.
