Jeff,
The "story" that the family has been told over the years about the last name is that Karl "bought" the name when he was in the Navy, as he felt that Svensson was too Norweigian sounding. But in some of my reading I came across an explanation of soldier names and thought perhaps that seemed more reasonable, or that he took his (step)fathers family name, Bergman, instead of using the patrynomic. His young age, to me, seemed to make it somewhat unlikely that he'd had military service himself....I thought perhaps a father or grandfather instead....but I want to be as sure as possible since when I broached the idea of him NOT being in the Navy, I met with some rather insistent responses from family members. Did the navy ever have civilians do any sort of labor for them?
Where is the best place to access info on Swedish military? I feel bad that all of you are doing all this research on my behalf, LOL!
