Hi, in the US we can trace the owners of a piece of property by going to a county courthouse office. I need to know what office in Sweden has that type of information for a specific farm in Vislanda parish.

Tack!

It is really hard to help without knowing specifically what you are trying to find and specifically what you put in those browsing boxes. Then I can try to duplicate that on Genline. (I can't help you use the world version of Ancestry.com without going to a library and I don't have time anytime soon (within the next few days) to go to my library, and you still haven't told exactly where the search went wrong for you. Maybe I can figure it out using Genline.)

Of course Arkiv Digital and SVAR and Genline and the world version of Ancestry.com are in Swedish. They are scans of records written by Swedish priests who wrote in their own native language. I don't know a lot of Swedish but I still can get the information out of the records. (I personally know over 60 American people (and one Canadian person) who don't know Swedish and yet can use these records with little problem, and I've noticed many hundreds, if not more, people on boards and lists who also can do this.) The records were written in a set pattern, for the most part.

There are guidebooks. I thought I'd given you this link previously.

http://researchingswedishroots.blogspot.com/2012/11/guideboo...

There are online vocabulary lists.

http://researchingswedishroots.blogspot.com/2012/12/some-sit...

It is not hard to use the Swedish records. You will find far, far more information in those records than in U.S. records. Swedish records are incredibly detailed. Many people who initially are afraid to use Swedish records eventually do their own research and even help other newbies.

We can't help you find death records in Sweden without knowing who they are, when and where they were born, etc. Start a new thread for each of those people. Keep each thread focused on one thing.

You asked about the best way of finding Swedish death records.

1) I use the parish death books found on Genline or SVAR or Arkiv Digital and those go until about 1941 in one form or another. (Yes, they are in Swedish.) Genline and SVAR tend to have the information from the SCB records (Parishes sent extractions from birth, marriage, and death records each year to Stockholm for statistical purposes starting in 1860. They sent extractions from the household examination records to Stockholm every ten years for statistical purposes.) Genline and SVAR might have some years with full records in the 1900s. Arkiv Digital tends to only use the full records, and it is better to have the full, complete record than an extraction from that record.

2) There is an transcribed index to deaths in Sweden covering 1901-2009. That index is on a dvd. It is not complete until 1947. Several people here do lookups on that dvd. If the person died at a time that we can get into the actual parish death records, it is best to use the actual parish records to confirm the information from the index.

3) There is a transcribed index "Begravda i Sverige"/Buried in Sweden) on cd which has "some" burials in Sweden. Burial dates are listed and sometimes death dates are listed too. These dates are subject to human error, so it is best to find the actual death record.

There is no other BEST way to find the records. If someone else has found the information for you, you are dependent upon how correctly that person has read the information and recorded the information, and since you think that you are the only person researching this family (and I doubt it since you don't know everyone in Sweden who might be researching earlier generations and continued to your ancestors' generation too), then you will have problems.

The Family Search site (Mormon church) plans to eventually have all the genealogical records of the world indexed and scanned and online for free. Maybe then (in a few years????) you will be able to see both a transcription (in English ?? It will probably be in Swedish but I don't know.) and the record in Swedish. How much patience do you have?

A full death record would tell you death and burial date, name, occupation/title, where that person lived in the parish, "maybe" the cause of death and things like that.

An extracted death record would leave off the burial date.

If that is all that is in the record, what is so hard about reading it? Names will never be translated for you. Locations will never be translated for you. A vocabulary list (or a message on a board) will help you with the cause of death. Swedish month names are similar to English, but here is a site with the Swedish spellings of the months. Expect abbreviated month names. Swedes write dates day/month/year and we write them as month/day/year. Be aware of that difference and you should be able to read the dates without problems.

http://wordinfo.info/unit/4402/ip:26

Full parish record books were created every year, but starting in 1860, it might not be possible to find births, marriages, and deaths on Genline (and presumably Ancestry) using the parish name. You might have to use the SCB records. That is all that was available to Genline on microfilm when they started scanning. Later they scanned some full records and they still kept the SCB records.

http://www.genline.com/databasen/SCB-materialet.php

Again, how can we help without specific information(step by step by step) about your problems searching?

Judy

I was using the browsing boxes. That's when it seems it was no earlier than 1880. What is the best way to find a death record? That's about all I'm missing from some of the family members. I would subscribe to arkivdigital, but aren't all the records in Swedish. I'd go nuts trying to read records.

I looked at my link to the Swedish records on Ancestry. I am NOT subscribed to the international version but I am familiar with how to search records in Sweden.

Did you use 1) the search boxes on the left or 2) the browse on the right?

Use browse.

Select the county.

Select the parish but be aware that you also need to search SCB (the statistical extractions from birth, marriage, and death records) because that is what was available when Genline started putting scans online.

Ancestry started putting Swedish records online long after three other Swedish services had successfully done so. Its first efforts were very poor. They didn't know what they were doing. I remember looking at a listing of parishes which they said were in Värmland county. Quite a few of those parishes were in other counties. They desperately needed help, which led to their purchase of Genline. They have Genline's records now but their organization of how to search is their own. People who have tried both prefer Genline for Swedish records, but since Ancestry doesn't seem to be adding new record types to Genline, the other two services, especially Arkiv Digital, are thriving.

Judy
If you get more details before trying to find a passenger list, your results should be the same. :-)

Also, are you using this page to search Ellis Island records? Use the gold form.

http://stevemorse.org/

The world version of Ancestry.com is not as good as other services in searching for Swedish records. I have only checked it out at a library but I think you must be skipping a bunch of steps in your description of "clicked on "Parish Record" it starts with 1898."

Could you be very specific about what you do before you get to 1898?

There are plenty of parish records, especially modern records until about the 1940s, which are on SVAR and Arkiv Digital and possibly even Genline (if all of Genline's records haven't been scanned onto Ancestry by now; I don't remember when they purchased Genline) which aren't on Ancestry.

SVAR and Arkiv Digital have other kinds of records too. I don't think Genline has been updated with new record types since the purchase.

Judy

Yes, that's Hulda. So she called herself "Hedborg" then it changed to Hedlund. This naming thing is so complicated. I can't imagine why she just didn't use her father's name (Anderson). I just know that I would never have found these records.

I had found the Swedish pages of Ancestry, but when I clicked on "Parish Record" it starts with 1898. Am I doing something wrong with that? If you enter a date earlier, it just says "Come Back Soon".

Since the person and family changed, this would have been a perfect place to leave this thread and start another one. ;-)

"(I have a very, very small family now - no living parents, aunts, uncles, etc. ) So I know there is no one doing any kind of research."

If you have ancestors with siblings (which is highly likely), then descendants of those siblings may very well want to find out what happened to those who emigrated. ;-) Maybe no one else in the U.S. is researching but I'd be surprised if someone in Sweden isn't researching (or at least, researching in the future.)

Do you mean the following Hulda Jeanette? (Telling me that I've found her but not providing details about her in this thread makes it harder to help you. ;-) I would have to search through all your former messages to find that information.)

http://www.arkivdigital.net (subscription)

Hinneryd CII:1 (1860-1891) Image 250 / page 245 (AID: v30633.b250.s245, NAD: SE/VALA/00133)

Why would she be known as Nilsson? Her father was Johan August Andersson/Andreasson. Where would Nilsson come from?
One final piece of the puzzle would be to find the immigration record of Karl & Julia's Aunt. Her name was Hulda (Nilsson - I assume). On the 1910 Census it says she came in 1895, but the 1920 & 1930 it listed 1893. Her date of birth is Nov 8 1875 and was also from the same Hinneryd Parrish. (you found her before but I have no immigration info). I found a few Hulda Nilsson records on different ships, but they don't have other info listed (like parents or home town, etc).

If I find her, then that will be the very last of my relatives who came to America. (I have a very, very small family now - no living parents, aunts, uncles, etc. ) So I know there is no one doing any kind of research.

Just to update you. Yes, that was the correct Julia. I found her on the Mauretania, arriving in New York on 10/21/1911. So she came in 1911 and then her brother came 6 months later. Both went to their Aunt Hulda's house in Warren, PA.

The article on names was very informative. Thanks.

Wow! I cannot believe you found him. I even knew Lusitania 3/15/1912(as he clearly wrote on that first application for Naturalization) but I could never find him. Of course, Nilsson was the clue. It even says his father is Nils Johansson from Hjortsberga, and he went to Warren, PA

Honestly, I am overwhelmed! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I think I need a glass of wine to celebrate.

His father was Nils Viktor Johansson. The patronymic last name of Carl Elof would have been Nilsson (literally, Nils' son, son of Nils). If the father preferred to be called Viktor, then your Carl Elof could have been Viktorsson. If they used the last name of the father (since naming customs changed at that time period), then he could have been known as Johansson or a shorter version of Johansson. Siblings didn't necessarily all take the same last name in this period of transition.

I didn't see any Lloyd. I saw Julia Hedlund (who was born the wrong time !!!!) traveling with Jewell and Alva. She can't be yours.

Apparently I haven't directed you to the interesting and informative article about Swedish naming customs written by Ingela Martenius. (I thought I had but I might have forgotten.)

http://web.comhem.se/~u31263678/genealogy/Names.pdf

What does the U.S. federal census say about when Carl Elof entered the U.S.? There is a column for a year of immigration in the 1900-1910-1920-1930 U.S. Federal Censuses. What do the Swedish parish records say about when he left to go to a foreign country? It would be easier to search for Carl Elof if you've found that information. It helps to know from which parish he left Sweden when we search Emihamn. Also the Emihamn database is for departures from a Swedish port. The Swedes could have left from ports in Norway, Denmark, and Germany, for example.

Judy

Oh, not again! Apparently I cannot type dates! Every time I MEAN to type 1895 I type 1995. So sorry. Anyway, I know Julia went back to visit parents with her young son, Lloyd. This is the firs entry you sent me.

That last one is very interesting to me because Warren, PA was where Karl and Julia's aunt was living in 1911/12. It must be her. I wonder why we can't find him though. What's really interesting is that I remembered one time my mother said that she heard that her father's name was Nilson (or Nelson) at one time. Nilson to Hedlund? who knows. But then when she went to Sweden in 1976 to meet some of the relatives they said that that the name wasn't changed.

Thanks for trying. I appreciate your help.

Be very, very careful with the years. ;-) Someone born in 1985 could not emigrate in 1911/1912. Maybe he could have emigrated in 2011/2012. I think you meant he was born in 1885 or maybe in 1895.

Maybe they didn't leave using Hedlund, but this might be your Julia returning from a visit to Sweden. This one would have been quite young to be traveling with a brother in 1911/1912, so this one may very well be a married Hedlund wife and not yours.

Emihamn database:

Efternamn: HEDLUND
Förnamn: JULIA
Ålder: 26 Kön: K
Född: 1909/1910
Församling: AMERIKA C Län:
Titel/Anm:
Utresehamn: GÖTEBORG
Utvandrdag: 1936 12 07
Destination: NEW YORK NY
Medåkande: JA
Källkod: 135:1245:86162B

Efternamn: HEDLUND
Förnamn: JEWELL
Ålder: 2 Kön: M
Född: 1933/1934
Församling: AMERIKA C Län:
Titel/Anm:
Utresehamn: GÖTEBORG
Utvandrdag: 1936 12 07
Destination: NEW YORK NY
Medåkande: JA
Källkod: 135:1245:86162B

Efternamn: HEDLUND
Förnamn: ALVA
Ålder: 1 Kön: K
Född: 1934/1935
Församling: AMERIKA C Län:
Titel/Anm:
Utresehamn: GÖTEBORG
Utvandrdag: 1936 12 07
Destination: NEW YORK NY
Medåkande: JA
Källkod: 135:1245:86162B

I looked at the 1900 Swedish Census CD.

Your Karl Elof was born in 1895, not 1985 or 1885.
I looked at your online tree and the children and wife do not match the Emibas entry and remember that there was no other Carl born in September 1830 in Ekeberga than the one you originally asked about. That makes me wonder if you have the right Carl since there is this other Carl on the Emibas CD.

What is the source of the information about the parents of Carl? Are you sure you have the right Carl?

Check the records of an archive called the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center. The membership records, assuming he joined one of those churches, should provide his full birthdate and parish of birth to confirm that you have the right person.

http://researchingswedishroots.blogspot.com/2011/09/swenson-...

Those records also should provide you with U.S. marriage information, baptism information, death information, etc.

Judy

"Do you know Swedish ?"

I am not at all fluent in Swedish. I know many isolated words and many phrases, but I can't carry on a conversation in Swedish unless the person speaks VERY, VERY, VERY slowly in VERY, VERY, VERY simple language and waits a VERY VERY, VERY long time for my response. No one has the patience for that. ;-)

I studied Swedish in college in the 1960s but since I have no one in the family who speaks Swedish, I've forgotten most of it. Doing genealogy has helped me remember some of my old lessons but modern Swedish is not always helpful in these old records.

I do know a lot of Swedish genealogical words (many of which are archaic) since I've been researching in Swedish records since 2000.

There are plenty of these words in vocabulary lists online.

http://researchingswedishroots.blogspot.com/2012/12/some-sit...

You don't really need to know a lot of Swedish to read these records. They were written in a set pattern, for the most part. You will quickly learn the few essential words, such as born, baptised, married, died, moved in and out, son, daughter, wife, common occupations such as farmer and so forth just by finding a few records and trying to see what the records say.

"Or are you good at reading that handwriting ?"

I can read some of it in the very old records and most of it in the records from the mid-to-late 1800s and 1900s. If I can't read something, I ask on this board. (I attach the image and also the source information with my request for help.)

I assume you want the attached records read for you. I suggest that you post each one separately, along with the source information and the image (or link to the image). People might have time to answer one post if it is short, but might skip a post with many items to translate. (I almost skipped your post because I didn't have a lot of time and I haven't noticed any one else jumping into the thread to help further.)

The guidebook "Cradled in Sweden" has a chapter on the old handwriting, which was the Gothic style of writing used until the early 1800s. I am getting better at reading the Gothic writing but it will probably take me a few more years before I feel reasonably comfortable with it, but I doubt I'll ever feel totally comfortable with it. When I first started, I couldn't read it at all. Now I can read most of the old writing in parishes in and near Frändefors parish (all with the same minister) but my ability to deal with that minister's writing doesn't transfer over to reading the old writing from a different minister.

"I'll look into those other services to see which one will help me."

They all will help you. They all should include scans of the same parish record books in the earlier years, but of course some services include other things too. Make sure that the service you choose has the parishes, time periods, and types of records you need before you subscribe. Arkiv Digital has a free weekend a couple of times a year. You need to register (no cost) to get an email when they have another one. They don't pester you with emails.

http://www.arkivdigital.net/users/register

"I paid for a World Explorer Membership, which includes some Swedish records, but I haven't been getting many hits on my inquiries."

I don't understand about the inquiries. Are you checking out a shaky leaf on Ancestry and then trying to contact other researchers who unfortunately don't respond?

Have you used the actual parish records (Sweden, Church Records, 1500-1941) which are on that service?

http://researchingswedishroots.blogspot.com/2011/09/getting-...

"I'm new to studying Swedish records."

There are guidebooks.

http://researchingswedishroots.blogspot.com/2012/11/guideboo...

It is important that you understand Swedish naming traditions. Ingela Martenius wrote this interesting and informative article about those traditions. It is extremely important that you understand these traditions or you will end up researching the wrong lines.

http://web.comhem.se/~u31263678/genealogy/Names.pdf

The following page comes and goes. It is working at the moment. If it is still working when you see my message, print it out because it could disappear in a nanosecond.

http://tinyurl.com/asvm286

This is the original page (in Swedish) with the same text, but it also includes some images.

http://www.ddb.umu.se/digitalAssets/81/81059_kyrkbinneh09121...

"I wish these records were transcribed so that I could at least put them into Google to translate them."

If they were transcribed, then you are depending upon someone else to interpret what the writing says. That person could be incorrect. Sometimes an image is posted on these boards. One person reads something one way and then someone else reads it a different way. (such as a name) It is important that YOU have the correct information for YOUR ancestors. Also, the best research is done with primary sources (created at the time of the event) and not with secondary sources such as a transcription.

Google Translate doesn't do very well even with modern Swedish, although we can get the gist of what was written. It certainly is not good at handling archaic Swedish. Remember that our ancestors did not live in modern times.

Judy

I do see this man with almost the same birthdate. I checked the birth records and there was no such Carl born on the date listed below. I suppose there has been a date error, either from the transcription or by a priest long ago.

Perhaps you know the children of your Carl and the wife of your Carl.
Yeah I only had one person who recorded those original records and I've sent them a message hoping to figure out their source.

However, I think you've been able to clear a lot of this up for me. Do you know Swedish ? Or are you good at reading that handwriting ?

Thank you for all of your help. I really appreciate it. I'll look into those other services to see which one will help me. I'm new to studying Swedish records.

I paid for a World Explorer Membership, which includes some Swedish records, but I haven't been getting many hits on my inquiries. I wish these records were transcribed so that I could at least put them into Google to translate them.

Thanks again. You've been so helpful.

The following sources are not links, but they will help you find the records if you are a member of Arkiv Digital.
Re: Jonsson's in Markaryd

There are large Swedish databases but they all need subscription. I have access to SVAR, http://www.svar.ra.se/. Another database is ArkivDigital, http://www.arkivdigital.net/. There are also Ancestry subscriptions that contains Swedish records.

There are no birth records for Markaryd parish 1717-1860. And no household examination records 1838-1870, but if you can get past that gap it is possible to find out more about the families. Johannes Jonsson with parents and siblings are for instance found i the mid 1830s, see attachment (Markaryds kyrkoarkiv, Husförhörslängder, SE/VaLA/00245/A I/8 (1833-1837) page 50). If Christina was living in the same parish then it might be possible to find her too. By looking through about 300 pages…

A small detail: Kronobergs is actually the same as Kronoberg’s and always used together with “län”, which sometimes is called county, sometimes province in English. On this site you can find information on Swedish parishes and “läns” in 1992: http://www.gis.scb.se/atlas/RikIndAtlas1992/index_en.htm.

Maud
" I don't have any other documentation of them, so shall I assume they took the name "Jonsdotter" and did not just stick with "Jonsson"? I at least know it's not "Nilsson" because of Johannes Jonsson, but until I see other papers that have the daughters with their last names, in your opinion, what would be best to put into the database for the girls? Jonsdotter or just Jonsson?"

It wasn't until the latter part of the 1800s that women used the "son" ending. (This might have been earlier in cities.) Wait until the person lives on his/her own to see what name the person used. In most records for children, no last name is listed.

Judy

"On older Swedish documents I've come across, for instance, Nilsson, in this case, The second "s" (or what I assume to be the second "s") looks more like a symbol, like a "/" or a lowercase "t" or "f". (Nilsson looks something like Nils/on on that document) Do you know the reason for this? I used to think it was just that particular person's handwriting, but I've seen it on several different documents, so I'm curious."

This is the long s used in old documents, not just in Sweden but in documents from the early days of the U.S. and probably all over the world.

Judy

" As I understand it, there was no solid rule when it came to using the patronymic naming system. "

The majority of our ancestors used patronymic customs. (Yes, there were some exceptions but patronymics were very much used.) Ingela Martenius has explained naming customs in her interesting and informative article about Swedish naming traditions.

http://web.comhem.se/~u31263678/genealogy/Names.pdf

Judy

I have just a couple more questions, if that's ok?

On older Swedish documents I've come across, for instance, Nilsson, in this case, The second "s" (or what I assume to be the second "s") looks more like a symbol, like a "/" or a lowercase "t" or "f". (Nilsson looks something like Nils/on on that document) Do you know the reason for this? I used to think it was just that particular person's handwriting, but I've seen it on several different documents, so I'm curious.

Also, this might seem like a silly question, but I just want to be sure.....what would you recommend I do when entering the daughters of Jon Nilsson in my database? I don't have any other documentation of them, so shall I assume they took the name "Jonsdotter" and did not just stick with "Jonsson"? I at least know it's not "Nilsson" because of Johannes Jonsson, but until I see other papers that have the daughters with their last names, in your opinion, what would be best to put into the database for the girls? Jonsdotter or just Jonsson?
I think it wasn't until the later part of the 1800's that a lot of people started dropping the "dotter" and just went with "son" for both male and female, or just taking their fathers' last name altogether, but I just want to be sure.

I hope I explained that question ok.
Many Thanks!!

Wow! Thank you! I can't believe how fast you're able to find these! :) Thank you very much for attaching the original document too. I really appreciate it!

I'm still learning the ropes when it comes to Sweden genealogy. I've learned A LOT on anbytaforum, but still have a ways to go. Anbytaforum is where I was able to get answers about Sweden's naming system. As I understand it, there was no solid rule when it came to using the patronymic naming system. Some families did, some families didn't. Some would use their soldier name after their patronymic name, and pass the soldier name down along with the patronym changing every generation. some would be using the patronymic name and then just chose not to anymore and stuck with one name to pass down. There were other variations, but I can't seem to remember them all. :) It was explained to me that there was a lot of variation, and unfortunately no set "rule" . I always found that intimidating when searching.

"I'm very sorry. I didn't realize I was being rude in leaving out dates. I was in a hurry to leave the house and had to quickly finish the posts I was working on. "

No one thinks you were rude. You were just extremely lucky to get information without dates The names are EXCEEDINGLY common.

I'm happy that you were helped.

Judy
