Hi there-
Thank you for taking the time to respond to me! Yes, I am specifically speaking of the Germans Catherine the Great invited into Russia. On my grandmother's side (this would be Eck, Unruh, Decker and I think it was Janzen), they were Russian Mennonites- and kept excellent records. I can trace them back through Holland to Switzerland and Austria, originally. This is going back several centuries. They came here in the first wave of immigrants from Russia in I think it was the 1870s or so, and settled in Marion County, Kansas.
My dad's parents were divorced so we don't know as much about the Reiswigs. I have seen the ship's manifest with my great-grandparent's names on it when they came to the US, also settling in Marion County, Kansas. I do know that they were German Lutherans who emigrated to Russia around the same time as the Mennonites. Immediately before they went to Russia they were from "Poland Russia" or "Prussia". It gets complicated because the borders seem to have changed on a yearly basis in that area. My dad, who passed away about 25 years ago or so, was James (actually Restes James) Reiswig, and he did a lot of geneology that other Reiswigs have used. I'll have to dig it out and see how far back he took it, and maybe that will give me some clues.
When I told my older brother about the Scandinavian DNA, he said that he had heard a story that the Reiswigs were actually originally from Denmark. He said when he heard it (I have no idea from whom), he thought it was something they claimed to try to avoid anti-German sentiment after the first world war. I had never heard it before. I was always told by my dad that from his side I was "Russian, Prussian, and Ukrainian". I have traced a great-great grandmother to from near Gdansk, Poland, with a name that could be German, Polish, or Russian (Grabowski). All of the Reiswigs as far as I can tell come from areas not far from the Baltic Sea.
I don't think I am directly related to the Gary Reiswig you link to here and I wonder if he is the Gary Reiswig from the famous Early Alzheimer's branch of the family.
Thanks again for taking the time to comment on this. If I can locate (erg) my dad's research I will add it to these comments.
