As you know, the written parish records are very hard to read and reading a foreign language in script is even more difficult. The more I look, it seems your "guess" will work well. I also found the parish copy which states she died of 'Hoste' or a cough.

Thank you so much,
Debi

The US census indexes do not indicate any Ludwig/Ludvig Kallak.

There is an Otto Kallak in Faribault Minnesota in the 1910 US census index with a Norway born wife named Anna. They are listed as the parents of 7 children, 5 still surviving in 1910.

Children born in the US would not be found in Norwegian resources. (This is a Norway message board.) Use US records such as the censuses to begin your search for possible descendants. Your local public library or nearest LDS Family History Center may be able to help you get access to US documents.

Re: Looking for HOLTE

You have so little information about Johanne's children and later life that I can't see any use in my trying to help with that aspect of her life after she married into "Holte". It isn't even obvious that Johanne married in Aasnes/Åsnes or that she and her husband stayed in that area for the births of the children you've mentioned.

But from the entries seen in the 1865 Norwegian census it is obvious that Johanne's paternal family tree is based in Aasnes/Åsnes. Her family lives on the Sjøli store farm then, her father born ca. 1822 in Aasnes/Åsnes -- my heavens even her paternal grandmother is listed in the 1865 with an appoximate birthyear and as born in Aasnes/Åsnes.

The first problem I noticed was that Aasnes/Åsnes parish records do not appear under that location name for the time period before 1866. A quick check of the descriptive notes for Church Records for Aasnes/Åsnes, Hedmark in the LDS Family History Library catalog gives explanation that it was earlier merely a parish within the older district of Hof -- therefore the parish records will be contain in the books for Hof, Hedmark. (The same appears true for Vaaler/Våler.)

So I checked the Hof church records online for a birth/baptism for her father, "Thorsten Kristiansen" (spelling variants expected and perfectly acceptable) in 1822 or so. And BINGO - baptised "10 Marte 1822" in Aasnes parish is a baby boy with his listed mother who matches the old widow listed as his mother in the 1865 census. (If I hadn't found him in 1822 I would have expanded the search first by one year before and after... census dates can be approximate.)
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9161&i...

Notice that in 1822 the family lives on the Sjøli farm so that makes the 1801 census for that farm possibly very interesting. The spelling of the farm name is a little different but it has fascinating information and earlier family indicated --
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Johanne's paternal family line has a LONG history with the Sjøli farm in Aasnes/Åsnes (at least back to 1801 as we see in easily accessible records), only her husband's family has any mention of Holte or Holtet.

Good luck in your research.
Norwegian parish records will be written in Norwegian (of course, what else would we expect?). But names are still names and require no translation. As long as you understand the date notation used by the non-US world (DD/MM/YYY) you can read dates without translation too. Even if months are written in longhand or abbreviated Norwegian -- such as the months "Mai, Des, Feb" -- easily understood and not requiring translation. A little study about the basic words for recording a birth/baptism/confirmation/marriage/death/burial and it really is not beyond the capabilities of the English speaker who really wants to research.

Nobody's name is going to be found in Norwegian records written as "Torstensdaughter" -- daughter is an English spelling.

You still have not clarified exactly what information you are looking for and where you hope to find it, Norway or America.

Start practicing with the Norwegian parish records of Hedmark, Åsnes and/or Gjesåsen, perhaps even Våler (Vaaler).
The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

Also use helpful websites for a long lists of translated words -
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na17.html
Can you clarify exactly what information you are looking for?

birthdates of two of the couples children? in America? in Norway? where did the couple marry? when did they emigrate from Norway?

Have you already searched the Norwegian parish records where you located the birth information on their first child, Ole?

Young Johanne Thorstensdatter with her family on the Sjøli store farm in Åsnes, Hedmark for the 1865 Norwegian census -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...
Young John Olsen with his family on the Holtet farm in Åsnes, Hedmark for the 1865 Norwegian census -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

There is no parish in Sweden today named just "Ryr". Instead, all the "Ryr" parishes have been given compound names by adding something in front of "-Ryr". In fact, there are three(!!) possible Ryr parishes that could be the origin of Lars Magnus Johansson. Valbo-Ryr is in Dalsland province, within the boundaries of the former Älvsborg county. Lane-Ryr is in Bohuslän province, within the borders of the former Göteborg & Bohus county. Väne-Ryr is in Västergötland province, Älvsborg county. The latter two are roughly equidistant from Frändefors (12-15 km) and Valbo-Ryr appears to be just slightly further afield (20-25 km?). Based solely on proximity to Frändefors, I couldn't suggest one over the other. Might have to search records from them all.

Since the website Släktdata (http://www.slaktdata.org/) has transcribed births for all three parishes, I did a quick search for Lars Magnus' birth but found no obvious matches.

Jeff

The following page tells how to research in Swedish parish records.
http://genforum.genealogy.com/johnson/messages/31874.html

In addition, two other organizations now compete with Genline to provide on-line access to Swedish records: SVAR (http://www.svar.ra.se/) and Arkiv Digital (http://www.arkivdigital.se/). Each of the 3 has some advantages over the others. Here is a message that discusses some of the relative merits of each:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.scan-balt.sweden.gener...

Good luck,

Jeff

Norway/Swedish ancestory help

I am researching my partner's ancestors and have made an important breakthrough but now I need some further help.

We knew her grandfather fought for Australia in WWI and had come from Norway but we didn't know much more than that. Recently we found his complete WWI service record online and found that he had changed his name when he became naturalised before the war. Importantly there was a letter from his brother in the files, detailing his name as K.O Eliassen and his father as Olof Eliassen and mother as Jacobine. We also knew from the records that he was born in 1885 and came from Fredrickstad.

Yesterday I found details of almost certainly this family in an 1885 census for Fredrickstad. In it says her grandfather's real name was Axel Martinius. It also importantly tells dates of birth and that his father and siblings were born in Luur Prgj, Sverige and his mother comes from Tanom Prgj, Sverige. Both I have worked out are Swedish parishes.

My help now is where can I find birth records for Axel and his parents, and or marriage records, to trace back this family further.

Thanks in advance.

Jeremy

My wife's great grandfather was Howard Ohren (later generations switched to Orren). It appears he came to the US in about 1899 from Norway. I don't know where from or if 1899 is the exact year. If anyone has information about this, please reply.

Hi

You have to find more information about Howard like when he was born. If you have his marriage papers you might also find the name of his father.

Howard is not a Norwegian name. It might have been Håvard, Halvor, Håkon.
Ohren must be the farm-name Øhren or Øren, but this name was used several places in Norway.

Just a quick look in the 1900 census gives 3 possible "Howards":
Haakon (Håkon); born ab 1895, on the farm Øren in Røros:
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

and Halvdan; born ab 1895, on the Øren-farm in Vefsn:
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

and Haakon; born 1888, on the Øren-farm in Sørfolden:
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

Vivi
This is what I have been told:
children were all born in Norway
Johanne did not come to America and died in Norway.

Most of my information was taken from the Asnes Boka that I was able to make a copy of

I have tried the Norwegian records but I can never located them in English and my Norwegian is very limited.

Thank you very much for the reply and any and all help
Robert
