Hi there,
I am trying to find the birth date of a Martin S Sund who was born in Norway c 1871 and died 8/15/1952 in King Co., WA, USA. I would also love to know if there is a website with his known ancestors.

Have you found him on any other records? Was he a naturalized citizen? Did he marry, and have you the records of that?

Martin S. Sund - does he show up on any census records, some of which tell when they immigrated, and some even tell their month and year of birth. (the 1900 one I think.)

I don't subscribe to Ancestry.com, but someone here does - maybe they can help. He's on the King Co. 1930 census - married to Anna B. Perhaps there is more about them on the document.

He's on the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 censuses, all married to Anna. You need to get those records and glean all the information from them that you can.

He may also be on the 1930 census of Merchant Seamen from King County, Washington and Seattle passenger and crew lists available at ancestry.com

The death certificate says his name is
Martin Severine Sund, died 15 Aug 1952.
His father is Michael Michaelson

It is possible to find things for free at this site:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

The 1900 census is in Sioux City, Woodbury (county) Iowa,
Wife Annie Sund, kids are
Dagna
Marie
Leonard
Ruth
Agnes
Viola

the 1900 census also says,
Martin Sund emigrated in 1887,
married in 1888,
birthdate July 1870 - he married pretty young.
Annie was born in Sept 1869
The kids are all born in Iowa. They've been in the US both it says 1887, and married in 1888.

The 1910 census in King County, Washington, gives the kids of Martin Sund and Anna as
Viola
Marie
Agnes
Leonard
Ruth
Esther
Angeline

Citizenship often happened within the first 5 years. Maybe he applied for Naturalization in Iowa.

I think I've found a good match in the Norwegian county of Nord-Trøndelag, the municipality of Inderøy (also spelled Inderøen) at the local church called Saxhaug.
He's living in 1875 at a farm called Sundsmarken (shortened to Sund perhaps when he emigrated?)

His father is named Mikal.
But not on the census with them. I wonder where he is?

Then I find that same good match emigrating from Inderøen in 1887, (as he should be) at age 17, going to Sioux City, Iowa.

Translation:
Leaving June 1, 1887, Martinus Mikals(en) unmarried, worker, male, age 17, from Inderøen, going to Sioux City, Iowa, on the Allan shipping line, the ship is Hero. Ticket paid for in America.

I couldn't find this Martinus Mikalsen's birth on the church records - the pages are screwed up on the scans somehow. But they might be available through your local LDS/Mormon research center to look at.

Using the brother Rasmus as a way to find the father's full name for Martinus/ Martin,

Kildeinformasjon: Nord-Trøndelag fylke, Sakshaug i Inderøy, Klokkerbok nr. 730C03 (1872-1879), Fødte og døpte 1873, side 7.

I can surmise the father of Martin Severin Sund is probably
Mikal Rasmussen and mother is Dorothea Margrethe Jensdatter.

In 1900 his parents are still in Norway at the same place, also using the last name Sund on the census.

Not sure if Marius and Arne are their kids?? Could be.

I think this is Martin's father Mikal Rasmussen on the 1865 census there in Saxhaug in Inderøy

He's a hired hand at a farm at that time.

Here is Martin's mother Dortea M. Jensdatter, also a hired hand at a different farm.

The following information makes me 99% sure that I have found your Martin Sund, based on the death info I found earlier, and verified with Norwegian records that do state his whole name. Martin Severin Mikalsen Sund. (Leaving the parish in 1887 records and his confirmaion in 1885 record)

Here is a parish record for Inderøy municipality, at Sakshaug (Saxhaug) local parish, of the emigrants leaving the parish.

The guy leaving Trondheim harbor in June 1 1887 seems to be shown as "signing out" of his parish on May 28, 1887.

Kildeinformasjon (source Information): Nord-Trøndelag fylke, Sakshaug i Inderøy, Ministerialbok nr. 730A10 (1879-1914), Utflyttede 1888, side 447.

translation: Nord-Trøndelag county, Sakshaug church in Inderøy, ministers parish book number 730A10 (years 1879 - 1914) Emigrants 1888 (and some from 1887) page 447.

Permanent link to the actual scan photo: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060210030551....

The link to the scanned photo is the best one to save. You can make it bigger and zoom in using your computer.

He is the 2nd entry on the page:

no. 19, year 1887, Martin Severin(e)? Mikalsen Sund born 1870, confirmed Apr? July? or Sept. 27, 1883? 1885? (I can look for it)
Signing out from the parish 28 May 1887.

Here is the confirmation record for Martin Severin Mikalsen

Source information: Nord-Trøndelag fylke, Sakshaug i Inderøy, Ministerialbok nr. 730A10 (1879-1914), Konfirmerte 1885, side 192.

Permanent photo link (jpg): http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060210030311....

Translation of confirmation record:
Saxhaug church, the 27th of September 1885,
last entry on the bottom of the left hand side:

Martin Severin Mikalsen, born July 8, 1870, baptised Aug. 28, 1870, then it seems to say Salberg - maybe where he was born? a farm or village?
Currently living at Sundsplads (Sund's tenant farm)

Then his parents: renter (not farm owner) Mikael Rasmussen, and wife Dorthea Margrethe Jensdatter

Martin was vaccinated Jun 24, 1871.

The last column is his "grade" for his confirmation studies. I'm not sure what it means, Femmelige? good. Sort of a level of how good it was. The ones above him say Meget Godt, (very good) so either he's better or worse thant those guys.

Here's a link to a pretty easy genealogy dictionary to use online, from the LDS/Mormon familysearch.org site.

Now that I'm 99% sure (no DNA testing possible?) I will explore the Sund place/farm area at Sakshaug/Saxhaug parish in the municipality of Inderøy, in Nord-Trøndelag county, Norway.

Here is a photo showing the Sakshaug churches it says.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inder%C3%B8y_sakshaug...

Wikepedia article about Inderøy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inder%C3%B8y

One idea I have for you to make contact with someone in Norway from that area that might help you is to contact the Sund Folkehøyskole. there at Sund they have now a Folk High School - not like our high schools but more like our two-year technical colleges in the US. I have always found teachers to be very helpful, and they know the families in the area. (hey, I'm a teacher)

On this page for the Folkhøyskole they have a map, and if you use the + to zoom in, you can see the place called Sund. Sund means the geographical feature called a sound. A sound/sund is

1. a relatively narrow passage of water between larger bodies of water or between the mainland and an island: Long Island Sound.
2. an inlet, arm, or recessed portion of the sea: Puget Sound

and you can see that sound/sund on the map. (Most Norwegian place names are actual physical descriptions of the places)

Here's the email:
info@sund.fhs.no

Here's what you should write:

In 1887, Martin Severin Mikalsen Sund (b. 1870 at Sund, Sakshaug) left the place Sund in Sakshaug in Inderøy to go to Sioux City, Iowa, USA. His parents still lived at Sund in 1900. Their names were Mikal Rasmussen Sund (b.ca. 1844) and Dorthea Margrethe Jensdatter Sund(b. ca. 1844). Do you know anyone that has connections to this family, or is interested in helping me with Sakshaug and Sund gaard genealogy? Could you pleaase have them email me at:
(then put your email.)

From this website of lookups volunteers I find a lookups volunteer Anne Hildrum,
hildrum@chello.no
who might be able to help you with some of the Sund, Sakshaug, Inderøy information on the cotters/tenants of that area. She's very knowledgable about Nord-Trøndelag genealogy.

If you email her, please give her the link to this information I've been working on, because it would be a shame for her to have to replicate everything I've done - it's taken hours!
