I am searching for information on my great-grandparents Peder Marinius Jacobsen, born 1843, Porsgrunn. Married Ingeborg Gundersen, born 1847, Skien. They were in the Port of Antwerp from about 1872 until 1882, before moving on to St Olave, London. Ingeborg died in 1891 and Petter remarried Maren - - - , born Norway in about 1894.
Many thanks in anticipation, Rob.

Hi

Peder and Ingeborg were married May 7, 1871 in Porsgrunn, Telemark county. No 11:http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1391&i...

Ingeborg was 23 years old and born in Nissedal. Her father was Ole Gundersen, but she used Gundersen as surname.

Hi Vivi,
Many thanks for your help. Every thing ties in with Peder Jacobsen. I did not know the details of the marriage. you have corrected an incorrect line I had followed through the Tromso & Latter-day records. There were several Ingeborg Gundersens in Telemark and I followed one whose father first name would be Gunder. Incorrectly. The UK 1891 census specifies she was born in Skien. As she died quite young in 1891, she was probably very ill and an third party presumed that as she was probable married from Skien assumed she was born there. The error could have come from my grand-mother, Inga Gunhilda being the eldest child & "Little Mother" to six younger siblings.
Many thanks once again for your guidance, I need all the help I can get.
Kind regards, Rob Graefe

Hi

Ungk (short for bachelor) ? Peter Marinius Jacobsen og (and) pige (unmarried girl) Ingeborg Gundersen.
Peter was fød (short for born) ? ? Eidanger. (I understand this that he was born somewhere else, but was living in Eidanger at the time of their marriage). He is 28 years old and his father is Jacob Andersen.
Ingeborg is born in Nissedal, is 23 years old and her father is Ole Gundersen.
Bestmen are ? Nilsen and ? Isak Jensen.

BUT since Eidanger is just southeast of Porsgrunn I looked up the marriage in Østre Porsgrunn church-book. I found their marriage with a bit different information. No 10:http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7878&i...

Ungkarl (bachelor) sömand (sailor) Peter Marinius Jakobsen og (and) pige (unmarried girl) Ingeborg Gunnersen.
Han (he) f og bos her (short for born and living here), 27 years old and father Jakob Andersen.
Hun f (she born) Solum, 24 years old and father Gunner Olsen.
Bestmen: Isak Andersen and Johan Nilsen.

Solum is very close to Skien. In 1871 it makes more sence that her father was Gunner Olsen than Ole Gundersen(Gunnersen; same name, different spelling).

Hi again

Do you know the birthdate of Ingeborg?
I have found one Ingeborg who matches your greatgrandmoter in a lot exept her father is Gunder HANSEN.
She was born (out of wedlock)Oct 18, 1847 and baptized in Nissedal Apr 9, 1848. No 11:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1389&i...
Parents: Gunder HANSEN from Solum and Ingeborg Tarjesdatter from Nissedal.

Her parents were married May 17, 1848. No 2:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1389&i...

They moved to Solum the same day as the marriage. No 15 right page:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1389&i...
Just the mother Ingeborg.

Ingeborg (born 1847) was confirmated in Solum 1863. No 12:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7901&i...
The place Klostergrind she is living on is an orpanage I think.

According to Familysearch she had the siblings Hans (1850), Anne Jørgine (1852) and Theodor (1854) all baptized in Gjerpen.
In the 1865 census for Gjerpen you find this Ingeborg Gundersdatter with birthplace Gjerpen:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...
In Gjerpen you also find Theodor as a fosterchild:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...

Probably their parents have died.
This explains the Nissedal/Solum as birthplace as she moved to Solum shortly after her baptizm.
But her father's surname was HANSEN. Might the priest who wrote have been a bit sloppy? Her mother's father was Tarjei OLSEN.

Hi Vivi,
Many thanks for the immense work you must have done. I have put all the facts that you have given me into the following scenario.
Ingeborg Tarjesdtr left Nissedal, possibly to seek employment in Skien. She meet Gunder Hansen, who may have been married or a seaman, or both. She becomes pregnant and returns to her family in Nissedal to have the baby (Ingeborg Gundersen). On having the baby she returns to Skien to marry Gunder Hansen, who has returned home or is a widower. They marry in Solum on 17/5/1848. Gunder Hansen may have had a family by a previous marriage. Ole Gundersen being his eldest son & Ingeborg Gunnersen’s half-brother, but much older.
Gunder Hansen dies between 1854 & 1865 in Gjerpen. Ole Gundersen becomes the head of the family & guardian to his half siblings. Theodor being fostered. 1863, Ingeborg Gunnersen is age 16 year and is either a resident at Klostergrind or is working there.
Ingeborg Gunnersen meets Peter Karinius Jacobsen and they marry on the 7/5/1871 in Porsgrunn. If Ole Gundersen had died his eldest son Gunner Olsen may have taken over the family responsibilities of giving away the bride. This is a practice used in the UK.
In UK priest can also be sloppy. Assumed entries are made for ease and as many people were illiterate at this time and could not read & contradict. This lead to inaccuracies in entries.
I know this is all hypothetical but it does fit all the facts without any contradictions, unless you can see anything that could be wrong.
Many thanks once again, Kind regards, Robert Graefe.

Hi

I have tried to find out more about Gunder Hansen.
He was a bachelor when he was married 1848 in NISSEDAL.

When the parents of Ingeborg Gundersdatter are married we are told that Gunder Hansen was 37 years old and born on the farm Steensrød in Solum.
Here is his confirmation 1829 in Solum:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1411&i...

Only a womans name are noted: Ingebor Gunnersdatter, Steensrød. (Most of the others have only a male name noted)
He is baptized June 20, 1811.
The only Gunder I find baptized this date in Solum is this: (to the far right almost at the top - 20 (=june 20))
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1410&i...

Parents: Hans Christensen and Ingebor Gunnersdatter.
He is born May 29.

Here you have his parents and siblings in the 1801 census:
