I have traced this specific Dahl family back to Knut DAHL born in R--stad, Trondheim, Norway.

He appeared in the Minnesota 1880 census, age 24, single, working as a clerk. By 1900 census, he is listed as age 46, born in September 1853, a saloonkeeper, and is married with children.

It appears he emigrated from Norway in 1873. Knut's immigration records have not found yet, so I am not sure if he changed his name upon arrival.

His Oakwood Cemetery tombstone lists his birthdate as 23 Sep 1853 (not 1856).

Can anyone tell me what City/Village, "R---stad" near Trondheim would actually be?

I am at a loss as how I can proceed. I am familar with the naming conventions in Norway, but I really do not have a starting reference other than first name Knut(e) and his birth 23 Sep 1853.
