One way to check about the history of an area's jurisdiction or name changes is to check the LDS Family History Library catalog. I looked up Bindal, Nordland, Norway and found this note under the topic 'Church records'.

"Kirkebøker, 1678-1910
Contains parish registers from the parishes Vassås with Tosen chapel and Solstad in Bindal clerical district. They were separated from Brønnøy clerical district in 1815."

So check 1801 under "Brønnøy". The 1801 spellings look like that was then spelled "Brønøe".

LDS website includes access to the Library catalog -
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...
Trying to figure out where,Bindalens district is in the 1801 Nordland county census. I notice it is listed in 1865 ,and 1875 census as "1811 Bindalens" with Digitalarkivet. Did Bindalens not exist in 1801 census for Nordland county,or was it folded into another county,or district. Or are the census reords just missing for Bindalens area? Any help would be great.

You can read and use parish church records for Tjøtta online through the website of the Digitalarkivet. Tjøtta records for years from approximately 1841 to 1928 should be in that online collection. Earlier records for the area are probably included under the area of Alstahaug in Nordland.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html
I see that your post is 9 years old but I know where the records are kept. They are kept in the town of Sandnessjoen,
in a community center type building in town. I went there to find records of my relatives who lived in Tjotta. I wish I had the name and phone number of that building. Maybe you could find a number trhough their city hall. For some years records were kept in Donna Parish, in other years the records were kept in Nesna Parish.

Donna has a rather odd shape but if you can locate it, Vaag or Vag (with an umlat above the a) is about two thirds of the distance from south to north.

Don't know whether you are still active after all this time but have just been researching some ancestors with Vaag roots and came across your message. There are no obvious ancestral connections.

You can consult the birth/baptism, confirmation, marriage and death records in the Brønnøy church books. Those records can be used on LDS microfilm or from the online scanned images.

Since my original posting of this query, I have discovered that Alexander was born in 1834 (approx) and that he had a wife named Janna who was born in 1833. They are recorded on the Minnesota census of 1895 where it showed they had been there since 1887.

Alexander was a cousin to my gr grandfather, Peder M. Henricks (Hendrikson). Alexander emigrated to Canada around 1904 or 1905, proved up his homestead, but then returned to Norway, I believe in 1908. We have no information on Alexander either before or after his time in Canada and would like to know who his parents were and which part of the family he belonged to. Naturally if we can find out what happened to him after his return to Norway that would be fantastic. I assume since my gr grandfather was born at Bronnoy that Alexander would be from that area as well.

Anna showed up on the 1875 census as a foster daughter to Hans E Andreassen and Oline Olsdatter of Reinfjord Lille at Bronnoy. Does anyone know anything about her? Who were her parents? How did she end up with Hans and Oline? I feel that since she showed up in my family group she deserves the interest and research as much as the rest of the group maybe more so since obviously she had some sort of difficult time in her young life to become a foster child. Hopefully someone knows her story.

ERLANDSEN, Hendrik pre 1865

Hendrik Erlandsen was my gr gr grandfather but on the 1865 census it shows that his wife, Oline Olsdatter is remarried to Hans Andreassen. Oline's mother Henrikke Andersdatter is living with the family at Reinfjord Lille (127b). This is the same farm where my gr grandfather, Peder Myre (Henricks) Hendriksen was born to Hendrik and Oline in 1843. I am wondering if anyone can help me find out more about him...when was he born, obviously when he died (it must have been between 1852 and 1865), who his parents were, did he have any siblings etc. I would also love to receive any information anyone might have about my gr gr grandmother Oline. Although my gr grandfather, Peder, and his brother and sister all emigrated to North America, Oline did not follow and after the 1875 census she is no longer at Reinfjord... What became of her? My gr grandfather Peder was appointed Norwegian Vice-Consul for Saskatchewan around 1917, he returned to Norway for an audience with King Haaken in 1922 and visited with some relatives while he was there. At that time he was made a Knight of the Order of St Olaf. There was a newspaper article written about him at that time and I had a copy but someone borrowed it and lost it.

Thank you! I have only this year found the following information:

I have a marriage license for Lisbet S. Stangvik and Peter Johnson from 31 July 1892 in Empire, Michigan. Peter is shown as 42 years old, father John Evenson? Ericson? (not clear) and mother's maiden name Helena Peterson. I believe Peter's Norwegian name may not have been Johnson. It says he was married once before. He had at least one child, a son Christian.

Lisbet is also listed as 42 years old, but parents are listed as unknown. It says she had not been married before. However, her daughter Johanna came with her from Norway and married Peter Johnson's son Christian after her first husband Andrew Thoreson died young. Johanna and Christian are my great-grandparents.

What I'd like to find out is anything more on Peter Johnson and Lisbet Stangvik. Was she ever married to Johanna's father? There is a strong familial connection to the Oleson family in Port Oneida, Michigan, but I have not been able to connect them, except for the marriage record of Johanna and Christian where she lists her mother's name as Elizabeth Oleson, father unknown. I believe Lisbet was from Stangik, and Peter from Trondheim.

Family legend was that Lisbet (and daughter) was preceded to America by her husband, but when they got here he was not to be found. I realize this could be a big story to cover the fact that there was no husband! But I'd like to know.

Any information on these family members would be greatly appreciated. In fact, if you have access to information that would cost you more time or effort, I'd be happy to pay you a reasonable fee.

Anne Nicholson

Your post was 8 years ago, but hoping you will receive this note. Recently found my ancestor Lisbet S. Stangvik's marriage record to Peter Johnson in Empire, Michigan. The date was 31 July 1892. There's an interesting family story about her emigration from Norway. Any possibility there's a connection with your ancestor? I know the dates don't match well, but the locations are fairly close! I don't have any information on Lisbet's (known as Elizabeth in most records) parents or siblings.

Anne Nicholson
