The "d" in Peder is almost like a silent letter. It is very common to see the spelling variations between the names "Peder", "Per" or "Peer". It is definately the same Person, just a spelling Variation on the Name. Personally, I would use "Peder" and "Pedersen", as that is what appears in the written records. Basically, you can just pick the spelling you prefer and stick with it. You will see the same Problems with names like "Amund - Omund - Ommund - Åmund" or "Ingebret - Ingebrigt - Ingebricht - Engebret" etc.

Brian

Brian - a quick question. The info. you provided coincides with the farm history, with the exception that the farm history shows Lars Person vs Lars Pederson and father Per Person instead of Peder Pederson. The dates all coincide, however. I would assume the church/census records are more accurate on the exact name?

While experienced in geneology research, I'm new to the Norwegian stuff; hence my question.

Your welcome, Kathy. I have had the experience that the farm history books are good sources to tell you where to look, but contain many errors. Always try to verify the data with orinal records if possible.

In the Bygdebok for Kinsarvik, I found that my great-grandmother Iverdina and her sister Anne had been combined into one Person named "Dina Anne", and her birth year was off by three years!

Brian

It looks like "Gerald", which must be the farm "Gjerald".

Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Voss, Ministerialbok nr. Cynthia is not a Norwegian name, and Michaelsen is most probably not her actual last name, bit taken from her husband's first name.

This is the birth record for Inger:

#7 (right page)
Born 6 Jan 1823 in Voss
Inger
Father: Mikkel Baarsen Gierald
Mother: Syneva Svendsdatter

Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Voss, Ministerialbok nr.
Yes.this looks right...Viking Olson and Inger Michaelsdatter. There were 2 Swidens in the area..the one I'm interested in married Bessie Olson(daughter of Hans Olson Nigard and Gjertrud Halvorsdatter...born 3/18/1862 Sd although the records list 1863.married 7/5/1886 in Chickaswaw Co Iowa. No one has been able to trace William or Inger and now with the addition of the name Viking more info may be forthcoming. The reason I came up with Voss is Swiden's brother Michael's obit said Voss and his(Swiden) Ancestry.com records say Noreg so I put the 2 together and you have helped find this info. Thank you Nordmenne in Iowa(Digital Archives) has the family in Iowa 1880

I'm looking for one member of the family that I can "get a handle on". A likely one appears to be "Swinden" (you gave no indication of sex).

Can I assume "Swinden" was a male? Born about 1859 probably in the Voss area of Hordaland, Norway and left Norway in the early 1860s.
Would this be the same "Swinden" as shown getting married 1882 in Clarion, Wright Co. Iowa? (source: familysearch.org)
In Sanborn Co. SD in 1900 census? (says birth was Oct 1860)
In Marshall Co. SD in 1905 and thereafter?

He is always listed as an Olsen/Olson or Olesen/Oleson.

I think he was originally named SVEIN born 7 Oct 1859 on one of the Olde farms in Vangen parish area of Voss. His parents were Viking Olsen and Inger Mikkelsdatter.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8323&i...

The family emigrated from Norway in 1862 --
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbas...

That's my best guess.
More family spellings? Some of those appear to have been quite drastically "Americanized". What they were originally may turn out to be quite a shock to you.

Did some family member long ago do a family tree using these spellings? Did they mention any specific locations in Voss?

A son named Michael born 1856 married a woman named Tone in Norway but he emigrated with parents in 1862 or 1863? He left Norway when he was just a small child... something is wrong with that info.

HA HA HA. I'm an American born in the upper mid-west to parents who always told us kids that we were "100% Norwegian".

Tracking my family has been my hobby and I've been fortunate enough to have been shown the ropes by some of the best. I've studied and I've practiced. I also enjoy teaching others how to find their own family history - especially Norwegian heritage.

Now about that 100% Norwegian... Mom and Dad would have been shocked to know I've discovered at LEAST two Danes, one Scot and possibly a Swede in the family gene pool... way way back when, but in a mix with the hundreds and hundreds of other direct ancestors I'm still probably "99%".

My instinct tells me that the clues pointing to Klepp, Rogaland are probably right. I think you'll enjoy that - a bygdebok is always exciting to get hold of -- even those that were not done very well. Just make sure you already have a good Norwegian-English dictionary.

My curiosity struck again - I know nothing of Gulen area and little of Klepp.
http://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Gulen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klepp
I'm interested in Hansine's father, Eiviend Anfinsen (spelling taken from her birth record). Her birth lists him as a bachelor (Ungk.), puts his birth as 1869 and then also lists that he is from what looks like 'Kleps P.' or 'Klæpo Pr.'

I'm wondering if that is indicating that he is from Klepp Prestegjeld (clerical district) which is located much further south in Rogaland, Norway.

I checked the Gulen 1869 birth records and didn't find him born there. But when I looked in the 1875 Norwegian census I got lucky - Klepp, Rogaland is included in that incomplete database. Look at Even Anfinsen --
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1875&...

Let's look at the Klepp area -
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/rogaland.html

It is obviously coastal and as one of the younger of several sons he wouldn't have inherited his father's farm - he could have taken to the sea.

It is an interesting possibility and it would expand your area of future research to an entirely different part of Norway.

Klepp is one of the parts of Norway which has a published history/genealogy book -- a bygdebok. Gulen doesn't so I didn't mention them.
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/bygdebok.html

So I've offered some pure speculation... giving you food for thought.
I love to teach - when you want to learn something - ask. I'll sure try... and I'll try to do that without doing all the easy finds before you get a chance.

Choose "Lesa skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Read the digitised parish records" [English version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

For the protection of privacy, there are limits for how recent church records can be published:

- Birth and baptism records up to and including 1929
- Confirmation records up to and including 1934
- Marriage and banns records - no limits
- Civil marriage up to and including 1950
- Death, burial and stillbirth records up to and including 1930
- Migration records - no limits
- Joins and leavings of the State Church up to and including 1950
- Records about dissenters up to and including 1950

If you cross these limits while browsing a register or a list, you will not see the digitised image, but a message informing you that the image cannot be displayed.

When you've studied and used the instructions and been able to find a scanned page on the Digitalarkivet that you'd like to capture as a URL to share with someone else or save for your family history documentation - just copying the URL that your browser shows will NOT provide a working link for longer than about 1/2 an hour -- it only works very temporarily.

Working direct links to the scanned images on the Digitalarkivet can be copied and pasted from the desired page from a display option available. At the top of the scanned image page is an option labeled "Bildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Image Information"[English version] which is by default set to "Ingen" [Norwegian version]/"None" [English version]. Change that and magic is available. Of the three options I like "Øverst" [Norwegian version]/"On top" [English version] because it puts the additional information across the top of the page and is usually easier for me to see.

The first line "Kildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Source information" [English version] is a really nice summary of the source of the information and is wonderful to have for making detailed source citations, footnotes, etc.

The second line "Permanent sidelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent pagelink" [English version] is the best line to capture if you want to save the exact URL location or share the actual scanned image and the source information. It allows the full capabilities for zooming in and out to best view the image and informs the recipient of the exact location, book and other details to be able to find WHERE you found the information.

The third line "Permanent bildelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent imagelink" [English version] is the best used to print a copy of the image or to save a copy of the image in a jpg format computer file. This line does NOT also capture the source information and therefore is NOT the best line to copy to share online when requesting help or assistance in deciphering the image found.

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

Thank you for the correction. The information I had was based on information a deceased aunt had passed on. She had visited Norway doing research for many families in a South Dakota town. She also published some books about their struggles when they first came from Norway. However her research was done in the 1970's before the internet and personal computers. Also, back then she would never add information that would cause embarrassment (e.g., born out of wedlock). I'm more interested in the truth.

You have the wrong last name for Oline's mother. According to the birth recordes for both Oline and Hans, her last name was "Ottesdatter". Possibly her father's full name was "Otte Johannesen", that should be checked.

Here is the family in the 1865 census:

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

The emigrant register for the city/port of Bergen shows Hansine leaving that port on or about 22 Jun 1900.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

The record shows her to be from Gulen district in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. Sogn og Fjordane is the province/county (fylke) which lies to the north of Bergen and Hordaland.

The record also lists her father's given name in the Norwegian tradition of patronymic naming (Eiven or similar).

Gulen parish records are where you would look to find vital records of the girl's birth and therefore info about her parentage. Those are also online for free use.
Hansine was born out of wedlock -- see record #10 on the bottom half of these pages (reserved for female births).
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1990&i...

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns.
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na12.html
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm
http://www.norwayheritage.com/norwegian-names.htm
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/farms.htm

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

The 1865 Norwegian census shows Hansine's grandparents living on the Henriksbø farm in Gulen, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway and should lead to you to other avenues for research.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

I'm looking for any information about my grandmother's family. I have very little information. Her name was Hansine (Sena) Monson born March 15, 1888 in Bergen(?), Norway and later joined her mother in Glenwood, Minnesota USA in about 1900 when she was 12. Her mother was Oline Monson Henriksbo, born Jan. 15, 1866, daughter of Mons Hanson Henriksbo and Dorothea Serene Shelrop Johannesson. Oline left Bergen for America in ~1894 and married a widower, Hans Brosvik. I heard that Hansine's father was a Norwegian sailor who either drowned at sea or went to Pennsylvania, USA.
