What you have listed is basically correct.

Karen Juursdatter Abusdal married to Notto Aadnesen Østerhus should be Karen Juursdatter Abusland (lots of confusion between those two farms in Hornnes)

Karen Nottosdatter married to Mikkel Olsen Aasland is from Hornnes farm in Hornnes.

I have ancestral information on most of these peoples. Too much to post here. Send me an email at jan-ads @ getmail.no and I will send you a PDF document with an Ahnentafel report (about 180 pages!)based on Siri Bertosdatter Nordbø

Hi from Bangkok. I am researching the same people, and am just now diving into the original records that HRN65 suggested in the 2011 note to you on the Vest Agder board. Those were some good hints, and the scanned parish records are helpful (especially when someone else provides direct links!).

I would acquire the Birkenes / Tveit bygdebok and look this up for us if I knew how to get a copy... any current sources?
Best wishes + looking forward to collaborating. +Bob

I wonder if there might be some misunderstanding and confusion among two different Marte Olsdatters here.

Berto Aanonsen Nordbø married Marte Olsdatter on June 25th 1850. The birth place for Marte Olsdatter is given as Senum (in Hornnes), and her father as Ole Jørgensen.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?urnread_imagesize=full...

Marthe Olsdatter Senum is born on Oct 11th 1831 and her parents are Ole Jørgensen Senum (1796-1840) and Targjerd Olsdatter Yksenskor (ca 1806-1890). They were married on June 28th 1822.

Ole Andersen Syrtveit and Asgjerd Ellefsdatter Aaneland were married on June 24th 1829. They had several children and their daughter Marte Olsdatter Syrtveit was born on January 17th 1832. After her confimation on October 18th 1846 I have found no trace of her.

Berto Aanonsen Nordbø and Marte Olsdatter Senum also had several children, and here is what I have found for them so far:

Aanon Bertosen Nordbø, born 1852, probably took over the farm.

Ole Aanonsen Nordbø, born 1854, emigrated i 1888

Kari Bertosdatter Nordbø, born 1856, married Ole Tellefsen Haugen on April 20th 1876.

Targjerd Bertosdatter Nordbø, born 1858, faith unknown.

Ole Bertosen Nordbø, born 1860, faith unknown.

Targjerd Bertosdatter Nordbø, born, 1862, emigrated 1886.

John Bertosen Nordbø, born 1865, emigrated 1883.

Aadne Bertosen Nordbø, born 1867, faith unknown.

Siri Bertosdatter Nordbø, born 1870, emigrated 1888

I am working through the church records for Evje, but have so far only reached the 1850s, so therefore still lots of missing information on this family.

The ancestors of Berto Aanonsen Nordbø and Marte Olsdatter Senum might be followed in many generations back to the 1600s.

Jan

Someone sent me a copy of his social security application. On it it says he was born in Arendal, even though the draft registration says Alendal. I've been though the Arendal births from 1882-1884 and cannot find him (he had his birthdate as Jan. 19, 1883). Cannot find his parents either (Berent Johan Eriksen and Marie Elisabet Andersen. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The WWII draft registration doesn't actually say Arendal, it says "Alendel". There is a farm called "Alendal" in Skjolds (Vindafjord) in Rogaland, but I don't find him there. Still, Arendal may not be correct.

According to the 1920 and 1930 census, he arrived in America in 1910. Do you have any info on his immigration?

The WWI draft registration confirms the date of birth, but does not list an exact place of birth.

I am looking for information on Axel Wilhelm Berntsen. He lived in Brooklyn, NY and on his US WWII draft registration card it says he was born in Arendal Jan. 19, 1883. On his SS application in 1930 it lists his parents as Berent Johan Eriksen and Marie Elisabet Andersen. There is a census in Arendal in 1885, but cannot find him on there. Also searched the Arendal church records for 1883 and cannot find his birth. Would anyone have any information?

Perhaps it starts with the Syrtvedt farm in Evje, Aust-Agder. The persons living on one of the Syrtvedt farms in the 1865 Norwegian census -
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

The detail available in the extensive parish church records is a marvelous gift from Norway. The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005. To be able to use the parish records you must first know WHERE in Norway you want to search for this documentation.

The Digitalarkivet web site - (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...)
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
When you click on that link another page will present a short list of choices - choose "Read the digitized parish registers"[English version]/"Lesa skanna kykrebøker" [Norwegian version].
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
(http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html)

Dypvag Baptism records

I live in the US and I have been putting my family tree together for a while. I found a lot of the family is from Aust-Agder county of Norway, specifically in the Dypvag area (Boroya is also mentioned quite a bit). Recent surnames are Thorsen, Johnsen, and Mogensen.
Years ago I was told by my grandmother that she had added our names (brothers' and father's) to a "family" church record book in Norway. Unfortunately, I was too young to remember the town or the church name. But I would assume that it is probably the church that my great grandparents were baptized in, back in 1883 which was in Dypvag.
Anyone have any suggestions on a website (in english) that assist in locating the church? I am hoping to add my daughters' names to the book as well.
If any additonal surnames or further info would be helpful in the search, please let me know, I do have part of the tree going back to the 1500's.

thanks

Yes, it is possible to a couple to have more than one child with the same first name. But then most often the first child has died, then they could use the same name again. Another way to use the same first name, is to bring it together with another name, like Anne Marie, Anne Kristine, Anne Tomine and so on. You can often see the grandparents name used this way. This was common even into the last century. The "rules" were to give the father's parents name first, then the mother's parents, or even the first wife/husband in remarriage, next any earlier born child that died.

I hope this was a bit explaining..... :-)

Anne Sofie, Norway
it was common in Norway that when a child died, the next child born was given his name. In this case, after Peder Henrik died, the next child was named Peter Christian. He was born 5 Jul 1864 at Teinstrand. This is the child that died in Grimstad, Minnesota on 24 Oct 1958.

Birth #98
Kildeinformasjon: Nordland fylke, Hadsel, Ministerialbok nr. 888A07 (1849-1869), Fødte og døpte 1864, side 107.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2642&i...

The Minnesota death index says "Peder C. Larsen" was born 5 Jul 1862. The birth year is wrong, but the day, month and middle initial match. Various census records also say "Peter C. Larsen".

Hi,

As thoraway mentioned, the column I didn't transcribe are the sponsors (Godparents). The names in that column are:

Andreas Hansen Teinstrand
Johan Tronsen Teinstrand
Ane Pedersdatter Teinstrand
Ole Ellingsen Tengelfjord
Lara Pedersdatter Tengelfjord

Teinstrand and Tengelfjord are farms in Hadsel parish. Farm names were often attached to a persons name, but should be considered an address - not an actual name. If a person moved, the attached farm name changed accordingly. The same goes for the attached name Klæbo.

A working URL link to the death record you were looking at would have helped a great deal.

When you've studied and used the instructions and been able to find a scanned page on the Digitalarkivet that you'd like to capture as a URL to share with someone else or save for your family history documentation - just copying the URL that your browser shows will NOT provide a working link for longer than about 1/2 an hour -- it only works very temporarily.

Working direct links to the scanned images on the Digitalarkivet can be copied and pasted from the desired page from a display option available. At the top of the scanned image page is an option labeled "Bildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Image Information"[English version] which is by default set to "Ingen" [Norwegian version]/"None" [English version]. Change that and magic is available. Of the three options I like "Øverst" [Norwegian version]/"On top" [English version] because it puts the additional information across the top of the page and is usually easier for me to see.

The first line "Kildeinformasjon:" [Norwegian version]/"Source information" [English version] is a really nice summary of the source of the information and is wonderful to have for making detailed source citations, footnotes, etc.

The second line "Permanent sidelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent pagelink" [English version] is the best line to capture if you want to save the exact URL location or share the actual scanned image and the source information. It allows the full capabilities for zooming in and out to best view the image and informs the recipient of the exact location, book and other details to be able to find WHERE you found the information.

The third line "Permanent bildelenke:" [Norwegian version]/"Permanent imagelink" [English version] is the best used to print a copy of the image or to save a copy of the image in a jpg format computer file. This line does NOT also capture the source information and therefore is NOT the best line to copy to share online when requesting help or assistance in deciphering the image found.
The last two columns on the page are empty for that entry. The column you are probably look at contains the names of the witnesses for the baptism.

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

---------------------------- not deleting this, but see correction below....
This child of Ulrich and Inger is not named for either grandfather and therefore might have been named for the deceased young boy that you say a record of death was listed earlier. It is impossible to say with so little information whether the dead boy was of any relationship or other import to this couple other than having come from the same farm.
----------------------------
You misread that death record. The child who died in July 1863 is 12 WEEKS old -- therefore is the same child as the birth record was for.

Look for a later birth of another boy given the name Peder by Ulrich and Inger. When they emigrate in 1866 the baby boy Peder is listed as 2 years old so would have been born at the end of 1863 to perhaps mid to late-1865.

Brian,
I have been looking at this birth record and I can't make out anything other than what you transcribed. Do you know what the information is in the last column? I can't make anything out. I don't really understand the name listed - Peder Henrik Klaebo. What is the name Klaebo? Something interesting, I find a Peder H..... Klebo, 12 years old, from the same farm, Tenstrand who died on 26 July 1863, shortly after this other Peder was born. Isn't that strange?
Laura

Yes, the confirmation was in the Norwegian State Church. In most areas of Norway, people were confirmed about the age of 15. I noticed that on the Lofoten Islands, many people were 17 or 18 when confirmed, some even over 20.
