Dear Mr. Gaber:

On one of the Amercian census they show that Andrew Martin Olson married Olga Marie Lyngstad on January 6, 1901 in Halstad, North Dakota, U.S.A.. The immigration date shows 1904 as per census.

As far as any information I have on Olai is an American census June 16, 1905 in Polk county, Brandsvold, Dakota, it lists his birth as 1879 mother and father Norwegian.
A Canadian census of 1916 shows Ola Olson, Age 35, single, immigration 1905 and birthdate 1881. I know the land that is listed was my grandfather's which is located in Delisle, Saskatchewan, Canada. He married my grandmother after 1916 and there is not Canadian census on line after that date.

Thanks
Linda

This may POSSIBLY be the same Andreas Martinus whose birth I posted above......

Emigrants from Bergen
leaving 4 May 1894
Andreas Martin Olsen Titland
male, single, sailor's son, Born 1876
Born in Alværsund, residing in Alværsund

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

He is probably the "Andreas Olsen" that arrived in Quebec on 21 May 1894 aboard the ship "Mongolian".

Before trying to find specific info on the family, we have to be sure this is the correct Family. I couldn't find an "Olai" born in 1881.

Do you have any further info at all that may help narrow things down? Where did Olai live in Canada? Have you found him in any census records?

Thank you so much for the email links. I look forward to reading them and learning more about my norwegian lineage.

The eldest my Great Uncle Andrew Martin Olson and my grandfather Olai Olson.

It was rumored that they changed their name from Anderson to Olson. They thought the Olson name would be less common then Anderson. From what I have read would Andrew have been the given name of his paternal grandfather and Olai the name of their maternal grandfather?

I was wondering how would I go about finding information regarding my grandfather Olai service with the Norwegian Militia. Is there a center in Norway that I could contact or a web site that I might visit?

Also, my great grandfather was a sailor or fisherman who died at sea. Again, is there a place that I can write or a web sight I might visit to get this information.

Once again thank you so much for all your help. I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Linda
The first thing you should learn is to understand traditional Norwegian naming patterns and practices.

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na12.html
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm
http://www.norwayheritage.com/norwegian-names.htm
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/farms.htm

Then -- when people emigrated they could identify themselves as anything they liked. Some stuck with their traditional Norwegian names, some chose to adapt the spelling to a style better suited to their new home, and others chose names which take some research to understand why they chose those. Add on the strange family stories that have developed over time and you can have to do some work to understand where to start.
There is also an Øverlie farm in Lom (and one in Øyer, and probably others). Paul (Pål) Olsen Øverlie was born in 1879 to Ole Eiriksson (b. ca 1852 Kjekahågån i Skjåk) and Berit Pålsdatter Øverlie (b. 1851 at Øverlie nordistugu). He had a brother Erik about a year older. The family including both brothers emigrated to America in 1881, where they may also have used the surname of Hagen [from the father's farm name]. Paul is noted in the Lom bygdabok as having come back to Norway, and leaving for America again in 1909. (from Lom bygdabok, vol. 2, p. 223).

I spoke with my uncle tonight. He is not sure if they travelled together when they came to the United States and Canada. They might have travelled seperately. He spoke of Andrew and Olai's father as being a sailor or fisherman. He is sure that he died at sea and their grandmother was so distraught, she was never the same again. Is it possible that they lived on a farm even though his profession was at sea?

I misread the farm name, so corrected it above. The farm name is "Søndre Titland".

There are census records for the farm in 1865 and 1900. I don't see either of Andreas's parents living there in either.

On his birth record, after his name, it lists his parents as

"worker Ole Andersen (Born 1845) and his wife Magdeli Monsdatter (Born 1854) from Søndre Titland".

The last column says the child was baptized at home by
Sjur Monsen Titland. Children were baptized at home if they were sickly or not expected to live. Andreas was later baptized in church on 27 Sep 1876.

Andreas Martinus was the son of Ole Andersen. "Olsen" means "son of Ole". Traditionally, he wold have received the name "Andreas Martinus Olsen" at birth.

Often, when Norwegian emigrated, they took their fatjer's last name instead. This was often the case when families emigratd together as they were expected to all have the same last name in America. Therefore, he could easily have used "Andreas Martinus Andersen" later in life.

In those times, names were not changed legally. The People just made the choice and used it.

As I posted above, his mother was Magdeli Monsdatter. They were from the parish "Sæbo", which was a sub-parish of "Manger" in Hordaland.

They probably did emigrate from Bergen, though.

A possible candidate is:

Andreas Martinus Andersen
Born 22 Jul 1876 in Sæbo, Hordaland
Father: Ole Andersen
Mother: Magdeli Monsdatter

In this case, his name at birth could have been Andreas Martin Olsen.
Trying to locate information regarding relative's from Bergen, Norway

I've been trying to find out any information regarding my grandfather who was born on Bergen, Norway and immigrated to the United States and then to Canada in the late 1800's or early 1900's. There have been rumors among the family that they changed their name from Anderson to Olson. If so would they just change their name on a whim or would they have to do so legally.

Their names were Andrew Martin born July 22, 1876, my grandfather Olai born 1881 and two sisters whose names I do not know. One of them immigrated with their two brothers and settled in the United States and the other remained in Bergen. I know my grandfather served with the Norwegian Militia. There father is believed to have died at sea. Both my grandfather and my great uncle were farmers here in Canada.

Any information that you can give us or directing us in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Linda

Hei Dagfinn

Thank you for the response to my old inquiry.

You and my wife would be second cousins. My wife, Sharon, is the granddaughter of Sophie Christine who was a sister of your grandmother, Laura.

Sophie married Arthur Christensen who was from Oslo, Norway. They lived in Rockford, Illinois. They divorced on 1935. Sophie never remarried. She died April 19, 1968 in Elgin, Illinois.

We have found a considerable amount of information about the family through the online archives. However, we were not aware of your grandmother. We had found birth records on the others mentioned in your message.

Sharon was not acquainted with any of Sophie's family. Sharon was adopted into another family and had no contact with her birth family. However, through research we have discovered a considerable amount of information about them.
Let me know if you would like any information about them. You can e mail me at rberkland7369@sbcglobal.net.

Thanks again for your response.

Ron Berkland

German research is very difficult. There are very few sources online and the court houses here do not allow public access to ANY records. I am from Wisconsin but have been in Germany since 1974. My ancestors are from Norway, England, Germany, Sweden, Poland and Belgium. I have been helping a friend with Danishn research. There are good sources online, but I find them muchn more difficult to use than the Norwegian records.

Brian

My husband is 3/4 German. He's been working on his genealogy and has been unable to get a connection across the ocean. He did learn that one relative came over from Bavaria. He has been able to find nothing on his ancestry in Germany. He can't read the German script and very little information seems to be indexed.

We've been to Germany a couple of times. The last time there we went to see the model railroad in Hamburg. It's incredible. They had completed the airport, and we got good videos of everything. We drove down to Hamburg from Demark just to see the railroad. I'm half Danish and half Norwegian. I feel very fortunate. I don't think any other country is as generous with providing genealogy information free. I think I've removed all of my brick walls. Now it's just a case of looking up and recording sources.

I had three major brick walls dealing with great grandparents. But I finally broke through with the help of people on the message board and the Norway list.

Arlene

Thank you again. I was wondering what the relationship was between Indre Holmedal and Gauler. THey seemed to know it up in Salt Lake City, but they didn't explain the exact relationship. Also thank you for the information about Skilbrei. I couldn't find Skilbrei in the digital archives.
"Skilbrie" is most probably "Skilbred", which is a farm within the parish of Gaular.

Note that Gaular is "Indre Holmedal" in the Norwegian census records. Indre Holmedal was officially changed to Gaular in 1990.

Thanks for the offer. I think that Oliver Olsen has been pretty well identified. Both the experts in Salt Lake City and Ingve Nedrebo do not think Oliver was born in Bergen, and they don't believe he would have changed his name. THe information in Gauler matches the birth date that I have. Oliver probably said he was from Bergen. It's really a more sophisticated place than Gauler. When people left Gauler, most of them went to Bergen according to the "udflinttede". I found a record of Oliver's sister moving to Bergen when Oliver was only nine. Also Oliver was on the Bergen randomized military records. So he did end up in Bergen at some point. Oliver was confirmed in Gauler, but it was after that that he most likely moved. His father died when he was only 8, and his mother ended up in Skilbrei (??) where she died. Couldn't find Skilbrei on the internet.

Wilkin / Wilken is a rather unusual name for a Nowegian. I would assume this record is somehow tied to your family:

Johan Henrik Wilken (Andersen)
Born 10 Aug 1832 in Bergen
Baptized 16 Sep 1832 in Nykirken church
Father: Anders Hansen Tømmerdal
Mother: Anne Marie Wilken

http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&am...

Also look for the spelling "Vilkin/Vilken". The name could possibly originate from Granvin, Hordaland.
I'm looking for information about Joseph Wilkin. All we know is that he was an Engineer in Bergen. He had a son, Joseph Alexander Wilkin who was born in 1837, and left a private boarding school to join a whaling ship. He eventually made his way to akaroa, New Zealand, where he married Elizabeth Campbell and had 11 sons and 3 daughters, one of whom was Francis Wilkin, my gt gt grandfather. Any information would be a huge help, thank you!

I searched the 1910 census, where you can specify the birthdate exactly, and did not find any twins in Norway with that birthdate.

Is it possible that there is a different birthdate?

LOOKING FOR RELATIVES OF OLAF OLSEN (OLSON, POSSIBLY NICHOLSON). HE WAS BORN IN 1898, I BELIEVE IN NORWAY. HE HAD A TWIN BROTHER NAMED SAM. I BELIEVE SAM BROUGHT HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTERS TO CANADA AROUND 1927 AND OLAF REMAINED IN NORWAY. PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU EVEN THINK YOU MIGHT KNOW OF ANY CONNECTIONS. bethprost4@gmail.com

KIND REGARDS
BETH

There are published books about the history and genealogy of Balestrand and Leikanger. They were of course written in Norwegian -- but I've used similar books with great success by adding a good Norwegian-English dictionary to my personal reference collection and working at translations of the parts pertinent to my own research.

"Balestrand : bygd og ætter" by Jon Laberg

"Leikanger bygdebok" 2 volumes by Per H. Bøthun, Roald Lyngvær

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/bygdebok.html

Balestrand Parish family

I am a descendant of Ole Thorkildsen and Agaathe (Agatha) Kieldsdatter. They emigrated from Balestrand parish in 1860. I have much information on their ancestry and would like to share and connect with other descendants. Ole and Agatha took the name "Jordahl" when they settled first in Wisconsin, then lived in Fillmore Co. MN. They also lived in Polk Co. MN, and passed away in LaMoure Co. ND. They are the parents of Jens(my Gr. Grandfather m. to Maren Sorine Torkildsdatter), Magnilde (Mennis), Brithe (Betsy Valtinson), and Kjestine. The three daughters were all born in Wisconsin in the 1860's. If anyone is familiar with this family please respond here, or by email at mjordahllarson65@yahoo.com . Thank you!
